Frogblox (Elk Studios) Slot Demo & Review

Did you know that frogs live in a huge variety of habitats and can be found all across the world, coming in a vast array of colours and sizes? There are known to be over 5,000 species currently in existence, an amount almost as high as the number of frog-themed slots that have been produced. I jest, but there are certainly a fair few out there. The latest comes from provider Elk Games and is titled Frogblox. It’s a high volatility, six-reel, six-row game, with an RTP of 94% and a potential maximum win of 25,000x.

Leaping into the action, we’ll discover a watery temple setting, which looks like a palace fit for a frog king. Overlaid on this scene is the game’s 6×6 grid, where both paytable symbols and blocker squares can be seen. Above this main grid is the feature reel, where special symbols such as multipliers, big blocks, extra spins, and a both ways activator can appear. These can all be collected by the sticky tongues of the greedy frogs that appear on the reels below them. Matching symbols will explode in cascading reel style, removing blocker symbols around them and clearing the full screen will result in the bonus round being triggered, which features a non-resetting multiplier. There is also a super variant of the bonus to shoot for, and both types, along with several other exciting features, can be activated for a cost from the Xiter menu.

There’s rarely a dull moment on an Elk Studios slot, and they do very well to cram so many bonuses and mods into each of their releases. This title follows that pattern, with its feature reel having Tropicool 2 and Nitropolis vibes about it. If you’ve enjoyed those games, I’m sure you’ll like Frogblox. As a kid, I was fascinated by frogs. I used to spend ages by ponds watching them hop about, and their tadpoles grow into froglets. Luckily, I missed the era where they were dissected in school biology classes; I don’t think I’d have been a fan of that. As an adult, I’ve moved on to enjoying these interesting amphibians on the reels, thanks to the many frog-inspired slots available. One of the best is Pragmatic Plays title Wild Hop and Drop. It’s a cluster pay slot that features an expanding wild that can grow to the size of the whole screen! Another is Fire Hopper from Push Gaming, where several multiplier wild frogs can spring around the screen, potentially combining and firing you towards the huge 50,000x potential maximum win on offer. Many would compare it to the massively popular Jamin Jars 2 demo here on our site, so if you enjoy that game, I recommend trying it. Next, we’ll be leaping from our lily pad and diving under the surface of this frog kingdom to explore the features of Frogblox in greater depth; see you over at the paytable.

Matching a winning combination of six is needed to activate the top payout value for each symbol on Frogblox. There are relatively few symbol types, with just three premiums and four lower paying varieties. The top symbols are the Red Jewel, the Beetle, and the Butterfly, which are worth 5x, 1.5x, and 1x, respectively, per way of six. The non-premiums are the often seen royals, with the Ace and King both returning 0.4x, whilst the Queen and Jack share payouts of 0.3x for a winning combo of six.

As commonly seen on an Elk Studios slot, we have 12 different stake options, ranging from a low of €0.20 to a high of €100.00. This is a lower volume of choice compared to some other providers, and the values within that range could be better placed, but overall, the majority of players will be able to find a comfortable stake selection here.

Frogblox Slot Base Game

Frogblox’s main grid features six reels, with six-row positions on each, producing a maximum of 46,656 payways. Most spins will start with a combination of paying symbols and blocker squares. Matching a minimum of three of the same symbol type from left to right, commencing on the leftmost reel, will award the relevant win and remove those symbols from the grid whilst simultaneously destroying any blocker symbols touching any of the symbols involved in that sequence. Additional paying symbols will then tumble down from the top of the grid into the spaces created thanks to the cascading reels feature. Paytable symbols appear in two sizes, 1×1, and 2×2, but all big symbols are counted as covering the 1×1 grid positions that they occupy for pay way purposes.

Feature Reel & Frog Collectors

Above the main reels, a 6×2 feature reel can be seen. Several game power-ups can appear in this reel and are collected by any frog symbol that lands on the reel directly below where they are located. These frog symbols can land in any grid position, at random, in place of a paytable symbol, and will collect any symbol from the bottom row of the feature reel in the reel position directly above them or remove any blocker symbol that is located there. They may also move around the reels by hopping between lily pads, leaving a wild symbol in the location that they have vacated if they do so. If two frogs appear on the same reel, they will collect all items within the feature reel. The special symbols that can land in the feature reel are as follows:

  • Global Multiplier: A multiplier value that is applied to all subsequent wins and will remain active for the duration of the spin in the base game or the whole feature during the bonus game.
  • Symbol Multiplier: A multiplier value applied to all symbols currently located within the reel of the frog that collected it.
  • Extra Drops: Awards several extra drops.
  • Both Ways: Activates both way pays for one winning sequence, after which its effects are removed.
  • Bomb: This symbol will remove all blocker symbols from the feature reel when activated.
  • Big Symbol: A paytable or wild 2×2 big symbol will drop down into the grid and crush the frog.

The bonus game on Elk’s Frogblox is triggered by clearing the entire grid of blocker symbols during any one spin in the base game.

Bonus Game

A standard or super variant may be awarded; both begin with six spins and feature a non-resetting multiplier, which starts at x1 in the standard version and x10 in the super variant. Both can be re-triggered by clearing the full screen in any single spin.

X-iter

Players situated within the appropriate jurisdictions who are willing to pay a premium for guaranteed high-action gameplay can do so via the X-iter button. There are five feature buy options to select from, as follows:

  • Bonus Hunt: Increases the chance of triggering the bonus by over four times – Cost: 3x.
  • Big Block: Guarantees that a big symbol is present in the feature reel – Cost: 10x.
  • Frogception: Ensures that enough frogs will land on the grid to collect all feature symbols – Cost: 25x.
  • Buy Bonus: Triggers the bonus game – Cost: 100x.
  • Buy Super Bonus: Triggers the super bonus game – Cost: 500x.

Pros

  • Action packed base game.
  • A non-resetting multiplier in bonus games adds to potential.
  • Feature reel adds an additional layer of depth.

Cons

  • Below average RTP of 94%.

Frogblox Slot Review Final Thoughts

Whilst the graphical skin of Frogblox is something new, the underlying game mechanics have a very familiar feel, particularly the use of the feature reel. That’s a good thing, in my view, as it’s a highly entertaining mechanism that provides a huge amount of depth in the base game that can be built upon in the bonus rounds. The usual high-quality level of presentation, along with the popular X-iter feature, tops things off nicely, resulting in a very playable, polished slot. My main gripe lies with the low RTP of 94%, which Elk seems determined to persist with, and that is always disappointing to see.
