Frogs & Bugs is yet another ‘tumbling reels’ style slot, meaning players can win even more from each spin and give themselves an extra little chance to trigger the free spins round too. It’s even possible to hit up to ten scatter symbols in this game, although such a combination only pays 35x the total bet in addition to the eight free spins awarded for hitting four or more scatter symbols. Frogs & Bugs Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Frogs are funny little creatures, don’t you think? Their bulging eyes can sometimes look more alien than earth-like, and don’t even get me started on the ones who dress up like Elvis Frog and have little frog girlfriends! A little-known developer, Roxor Gaming, revealed that there are even a handful of billionaire frogs out there if you know where to look – their Frog of Riches Megaways slot proves it! I was excited to find out what Pragmatic Play’s take on the frog theme might look like, but whilst Frogs & Bugs is certainly a great-looking online slot, its low maximum win of just 3,000x is a little bit low for my tastes.
I could forgive a low jackpot if the game were fun and frequently awarded reasonably sized payouts, but the most valuable symbols on the paytable of Frogs and Bugs, the green frogs, are only worth 2x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. The blue frogs will pay you 1.2x your stake for all six symbols, whilst the purple variety is even less valuable at just 1x for a six of a kind combination. These prizes won’t impress anybody, and even the scatter payouts of between 5x and 35x the total bet for between four and ten symbols feel awfully low to me. You’re going to need to win on a large number of payways simultaneously to collect anything substantial whilst spinning Frogs & Bugs, especially if your combinations consist of any of the medium-paying symbols – the cherries, lemons, watermelon, and limes are worth 0.8x, 0.6x, 0.4x, and 0.28x respectively, whilst the four playing card suits used for the lowest-paying symbols can be worth as little as 0.16x for a six of a kind hit.
At least there aren’t going to be any issues concerning the wager selection mechanism – whilst many modern slots impose arbitrary restrictions on how much you are allowed to bet, Frogs & Bugs suffers from no such issues. The minimum/maximum permitted bets are €0.25 and €125.00 per spin, respectively.
Base Game & Modifiers
I mentioned in the opening paragraph that Frogs & Bugs uses an enlarged reel set, although I didn’t even notice this when I first began to play the game! This slot feels very much like a more standard 243-way machine, but with six reels, the payway count is actually increased to a much more substantial 729. You would expect this to have a positive impact on the prizes available on the paytable, but in my eyes, the six of a kind payouts are very disappointing.
The tumbling reels mechanic makes the base game a little more profitable than it might otherwise be, as these allow you to collect many more winning symbols than would normally be possible. However, it’s a shame that Pragmatic Play did not include any other base game features or modifiers.
Golden Wild Symbol
The ‘Golden Wild’ is present on all five reels. Whenever these golden discs land on the playfield, they trigger a free re-spin mode where the golden wilds remain on the screen and nudge down by one position with each re-spin. Each time this occurs, the multiplier value of the golden wild will increase by 1x.
The re-spins end when the final golden wild moves off the bottom of the reels – luckily, it’s possible to extend the feature indefinitely if new gold discs continue to appear whilst it is active.
Frogs & Bugs Slot Bonus Features
You’ll need to hit at least four scatter symbols simultaneously to trigger a free spin round with eight free spins. Hitting more than four scatters will not add any extra free spins to your starting total but does at least award a small cash prize to accompany your feature.
Free Spins
At the start of each set of free spins, the playfield shape will change from its regular size of 6×3 to an equally unusual 5×6 configuration. The top three rows are all locked at the start of the bonus – up to eight positions can be randomly unlocked at the start of each free spin, and whenever this occurs, it will increase the number of available payways up to a maximum of 6,400 when all rows are open. Unfortunately, the free spins cannot be re-triggered.
Bonus Buy
If you don’t want to wait for the free spins to activate naturally, you can take advantage of the game’s bonus buy facility instead. This option costs 100x the current stake, and the number of scatter symbols that will subsequently land is always four.
Pros

- Somewhat unique gameplay mechanics make for an interesting slot to try.

- The regular symbol payouts are frustratingly low.
- And so is the maximum jackpot cap of just 3,000x the total bet.
Final Thoughts
Frogs & Bugs isn't quite a low-variance machine – there are still a handful of games out there with maximum jackpots of 1,000x or even 500x the total bet, believe it or not! Let’s call this a medium-variance slot then, and if that sounds like your thing, then give this machine a try – for me, however, the payouts are just far too low to make this worth playing for real money.
