Fruit Duel Play Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
There isn’t much more we can say about fruit-based games, is there? This game, the Fruit Duel slot game, utilises a three-reel set-up much like the oldest slot machines you could possibly imagine. There are many other three-reel online slots which utilise fruit as their theme. Still, I feel Hacksaw has set its game apart by incorporating many modern features. For example, it even uses payways rather than paylines, something I am sure has been done with a three-reel slot before, and yet I don’t remember coming across another game with 17 pay ways in the past either. Hacksaw must hope that this is a game that can survive on its own merits, in my opinion, because I cannot imagine that there are many players out there who crave fruit-based slot machines.
It’s only natural that your next thought will be, how does a game like this pay? It’s no coincidence then that we move on to this part of the game next – we’re kind of like mindreaders in that way, you see. The wild symbol and the strawberry both have a payout of 5x your stake for three-of-a-kind, which isn’t very much, but then again, how much can you expect to win for a simple three-of-a-kind combination? The cherries are next with a return of 2x, followed by the bananas at 1.5x, the lemon at 1x, and a further four low-paying symbols with payouts ranging between 0.1x and 0.2x your stake for a full pay way. If you had a screen full of the maximum strawberry symbol, you would have 17 pay ways of 5x, which still doesn’t amount to very much – you will need those multipliers to come close to the game’s maximum advertised prize of 3,333x your stake.
Hacksaw keeps things as simple as possible when choosing your current wager – you can go as low as €0.10 per spin or as high as €100.00 per spin, but all changes are made with a simple pair of up and down controls.
Base Game & Modifiers
So, how does the base game measure up? A three-by-three reel set doesn’t provide much scope for a varied and exciting base game unless you add in a bunch of modifiers and extra features to spice things up, and the Duelreels mechanic implemented by Hacksaw does go some way towards achieving this. Let’s investigate:
Duelreels Feature
This feature transforms entire reels into wild multipliers, which sounds great in theory. Still, this description also masks the fact that a reel full of stacked wilds would be far more beneficial than a single, reel-high symbol with a multiplier attached to it.
If the VS symbol lands on any spin and an expansion of the symbol would result in a winning combination, it will do so. If there is more than one possibility of winning combinations – for example, between two fruits or multipliers – then a duel will be held, and the fruit that wins the duel will apply its multiplier to the whole reel before the VS symbol expands and becomes wild.
The possible multiplier values that a VS symbol can create are x2, x3, x4, x5, x10, x15, x20, x25, x50, x75, and x100. Whilst I was testing the game earlier, I wondered what would happen if I was to hit an x100 multiplier on multiple reels at the same time; it turns out that these multipliers will be added together rather than multiplied together before being applied to your winnings, which explains the maximum win of 3,333x.
Fruit Duel Slot Free Spins Feature
Free spins bonus rounds are something of a rarity in three-reel online slots, so it’s nice to see that Hacksaw has chosen to implement such a feature in their Fruit Duel video slot.
You’ll need to hit a free spins scatter symbol on all three reels simultaneously to trigger the feature, and there is no cash payout for hitting these symbols. As far as the paytable explains, the only difference between this mode and the base game is that you have a much better chance of hitting VS symbols during the free spins feature.
Hitting three free spins scatters will award ten free spins, but it does not appear that you can retrigger the free spins as the scatter symbols do not appear on the reels during this part of the game. On the other hand, the paytable does claim that any VS battles which occur during the free spins feature are much more likely to result in a win for the symbol with the bigger multiplier – this is difficult to test in the short time available to write a review. Still, I can at least say that I experienced some fairly big wins in a short number of attempts at using the bonus buy feature as I was testing this game.
Bonus Buy Feature
There are two options as far as the bonus buy feature is concerned in Fruit Duel online slot. A UK-friendly option known as “FeatureSpins” costs just 10x your current stake and guarantees that at least one VS symbol will land on the next spin, whilst buying your way directly to the free spins costs much more at 80x your current stake.
Nevertheless, many games charge far more to buy your way straight to their bonus round. At just 80x your bet, I would call this a bargain amongst bonus buy features and would definitely consider using this option if it was available to me in my jurisdiction.
Fruit Duel Play Slot Review Final Thoughts
Fruit Duel proves that you don’t necessarily need a unique or innovative theme to create a worthwhile online slot; simple fruits work just as well as they always have. This is a game that I have no trouble recommending despite its somewhat unimaginative reel strips. Fruit Duel could be a smash-hit online slot with a good re-skin.
