Game Overview
The first Fruit Shop Frenzy game was produced by NetEnt in 2013 – time sure flies when you’re playing slots, doesn’t it? It was a relatively simple low volatility slot with 15 pay lines, although we later got a Megaways update with many of the same features but a drastically improved maximum jackpot. Since Red Tiger purchased NetEnt, they’ve been busy revamping many of the developers’ classic online slots, boosting their RTPs in the process – we get a much more palatable 96.04% here rather than the 94% offered by the original game. Fruit Shop Frenzy utilises only 15 fixed maximum payways – a big drop from the Megways version, but we do at least get a rather tidy maximum jackpot prize of over 10,000x the total bet.
Fruit Shop Frenzy doesn’t look like your typical Red Tiger slot though it uses a very different help and paytable setup, which makes me wonder if perhaps the NetEnt team worked on this one rather than Red Tiger themselves. Many aspects of the first game return for this release, too – doing away with the changes that Red Tiger made with their Megaways release. For example, one or more winning combinations that feature fruit symbols will now award you two free spins once more, with an increasing multiplier bar that can reach as high as 5x. The free spins also come with a helper feature that can be activated if a special symbol lands on reel five. The eponymous ‘frenzy’ mode refers to a randomly activated feature that can result from the helper feature and add up to three more spins to your remaining total whilst also expanding the multiplier bar with twice as many steps for a maximum of 10x multipliers.
The last place I would expect to find a ‘frenzy’ would be in a fruit shop, but once again, it seems that I’m woefully ignorant of these things doesn’t it – not only do frenzies occur in fruit shops, but we have empirical proof in our free demo slot of Fruit Shop Frenzy, available to play below!
Fruit Shop Frenzy Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Whilst the original Fruit Shop slots were a little before our time here at Demoslot, the games were so popular with players of the day that other developers released a few clones of them just a few years later. Arctic Fruits by 1×2 Gaming was one such example – it wasn’t quite a direct clone of NetEnt’s original, but it was pretty damn close. Cherry Bombs by Mancala Gaming was a little less similar, but it definitely boasted a similar heritage. Both of those games look laughably out of date in comparison to this one though – Fruit Shop Frenzy is a definite 2023-quality release that is a pleasure to look at it and even more fun to play. But now the big question is, how does it pay?
The standard payline wins aren’t half bad if I’m honest – 100x the total bet for a five of a kind pay line of the highest-paying cherry symbols, followed by 50x for the plums, 40x for the lemons, 25x for the oranges, and finally 12x for the watermelons. As for the low pays, we’ve got a maximum payout of 9x the total bet for five aces, 6x the bet for five kings, 4.5x the bet for five queens, 3.6x the bet for five jacks, or 3x the bet for five tens.
And how much can you bet? The minimum wager is €0.10 per spin, and there are more than a dozen bets before you reach the maximum bet of €8.00. So, there should be more than enough choices to please the majority of those who want to try the game out for real money.
Base Game & Modifiers
Moving on to the base game, we’ve got a typical five-column, three-row video slot layout, which features fifteen fixed paylines. There are wild symbols on reels two, three, and four, and any winning combination occurring anywhere on the playfield will trigger two free spins with a multiplier bar featuring 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, and 5x steps.
Helper Feature
During the free spins feature, a new helper symbol is added to the fifth reel. When it lands, it will randomly activate one of the following three features:
- Increase the value of all multipliers by 1x
- Advance to the next multiplier
- Trigger Frenzy Mode
Fruit Shop Frnezy Slot Bonus Features
Fruit Shop doesn’t have a regular scatter-triggered bonus round – instead, it features a ‘frenzy mode’ that can be activated via the helper feature (see the previous section for details).
Frenzy Mode
Whenever the frenzy mode is activated, the multiplier bar increases from 5 to 10 steps – 1x through to 10x – but those can be further increased in the same way as during the base game utilising the helper mode.
During Frenzy Mode, every winning round is given one additional free spin and will progress you one step along the multiplier bar. The helper mode is also available during frenzy mode but now comes with two extra features – random wilds or ‘Double X’.
The random wilds feature will add between one and six wild symbols to the playfield in random positions on reels two, three, and four, whilst the Double X feature will double the value of all multipliers currently shown on the multiplier bar.
Bonus Buy
To guarantee a spin that will include a win made up of the premium symbols, you can access the feature buy for just 20x the current bet.
Pros
- Whichever team was responsible for this update, they did a fantastic job!
- The Double X frenzy mode feature makes huge wins possible – it’s a shame that there are so many prerequisites to access it though.
- But when you can buy the frenzy mode for just 20x the total bet, is that really the end of the world?!
Cons
- The visual styling is identical to the original game – a little bit lazy in my view, although it does still look good.
Final Thoughts
Fruit Shop Frenzy brings a classic online slot bang up to date with a bunch of new features that are sure to appeal to both new slot fans and those with years of slotting experience alike. Don’t miss it!
