Game Overview
iGaming studio Slotmill’s previous titles have all pretty much been winners, so I was looking forward to checking out Fruit Smash. The theme may not be anything new or inspired, but I had high hopes that the gameplay would stack up. Things start off well – the presentation is first-rate once again, confirming that this is a developer with an eye for great user interface design and top-notch graphic artists. The large 6×6 reel set makes Fruit Smash look like a cluster-paying grid slot, but it uses an “anywhere pays” setup instead. The RTP is 96.19% whilst the maximum win is capped at 6,000x your bet.
The game makes use of rolling reels or “avalanches” as they are known in Fruit Smash, backed by an ascending multiplier which increases each time you hit more than one consecutive avalanche on a single paid spin. Giant symbols can appear at random with huge multipliers attached, and a free spin-based bonus round is included as well.

Fruit Smash Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
There are far too many fruit-themed online slots to list here; you would probably need weeks or months to try them all out for real! Some of the most memorable examples would be Pragmatic Play’s Hot to Burn, NetEnt’s Fruit Shop and Reel Rush, or Play’N’Go’s Star Joker franchise. You really must do something special to stand out amongst such a huge crowd of similar looking games.
The “anywhere pays” system used by Fruit Smash could potentially be described as special – it is certainly rare, appearing on just a handful of online slot releases each year. Under this system, players are required to hit eight or more identical symbols anywhere on the reels to be awarded a payout. The return for hitting eight matching symbols is less than your stake, however, with the largest wins only being awarded for hitting 16 or more matching symbols. The top symbol is apparently called a “Dragon Fruit” (I feel seriously dumb for having no idea what it was…) and returns 60x your bet for hitting 16 or more. Sixteen does sound like a big ask, although there are 36 possible spaces on the grid which should make this a little more achievable. The pineapple is in second place with a return of 40x for the maximum combination, followed by the strawberry at 36x and the plum/yellow fruit at 30x.
The minimum wager per spin in Fruit Smash is just €0.10 per spin, easily low enough for even the lowest of low rolling players! At the other end of the scale, you can bet as much as €50.00 per spin if you wish, although I certainly wouldn’t recommend it!
Base Game & Modifiers
Unlike most online slots which make use of smaller playfields such as 5×3 or 5×4 in size, the grid used by Fruit Smash looks enormous with its 6×6 reel set. Wins are awarded for hitting eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the screen before being immediately removed allowing for new symbols to take their place. Each time this happens it will boost an ascending multiplier, similar to that used in the bonus round of many Megaways online slots. This process can continue indefinitely as long as you keep on hitting further wins, and I didn’t find myself becoming bored in between the bonus rounds as I do when playing some other games.
Progressive Win Multiplier
This is the name given to the ascending multiplier on the games paytable, although it is not progressive in the typical sense of the word when it used in online slots. The multiplier is set to 1 at the beginning of each paid spin and increases each time a winning combination is removed from the reels. During the bonus round, the multiplier is not reset between spins.
Giant Fruit
These badboys don’t appear often, but occasionally you will see larger fruits of 2×2, 3×3, or even 4×4 in size! Each giant fruit has a multiplier attached to it of up to 100x, and if you are lucky enough to hit two matching ones on a single spin then there multipliers will be multiplied together making for some truly mammoth big win opportunities.
Furthermore, if you don’t manage to get enough fruit to score a win with your giant fruit then Fruit Smash will help you out; the game makes any non-winning giant fruit sticky and awards free re-spins until such time as your giant fruit forms part of a winning combination. Better yet, these symbols even appear during the free spin bonus round!
Burst Mode Feature
Fruit Smash comes with Slotmill’s unique Burst Mode feature attached to it, which removes all base game play from within the slot. If you choose to activate this option then you simply select a bet size, a number of spins, and then sit back and watch to see if the burst mode awards you any cash prizes. The only time that you’ll see any in-game action through this feature is if the bonus free spins are activated during it.
Fruit Smash Slot Bonus Features
You will need to hit at least three bonus symbols anywhere on the screen during regular play to trigger one of Fruit Smash’s two bonus rounds. You will usually get the regular free spins, but occasionally the game likes to randomly give you the Frenzy free spins instead. Keep your fingers crossed – the frenzy free spins are seriously awesome! You can also retrigger a further five free spins in either mode by hitting three more bonus symbols during the feature.
Free Spins Feature
The free spin bonus round allows you to keep your current multiplier in between spins instead of resetting this to 1x each time you make a new spin. For this reason, you really want as many consecutive winning combinations as possible from each of your free spins, even if they do not pay much on their own.
If you hit any of the giant fruit symbols during the feature, then your winnings will be multiplied by the current bonus round multiplier before the giant fruit multiplier is applied.
Fruit Frenzy Free Spins Feature
This special bonus round occurs randomly, unless you choose to use the bonus buy feature to purchase it outright. That’s a shame because this is an exciting part of the game which will be difficult for some players to see very often.
You can identify this special mode as the colour of the background will change and every free spin will begin with at least one giant fruit symbol on the reels, guaranteeing you will hit a win from every single spin. I did notice that the giant fruit seem to have smaller multipliers in this mode, but perhaps that is to be expected.
Bonus Buy Feature
If it is permitted in your jurisdiction, then you can skip the base game and head straight for one of the games special features. You can pay 5x your current stake to score yourself a giant fruit, 100x your stake for the regular free spins, or 500x (!) if you want to see the fruit frenzy free spins without delay. It’s tough to say if that is reasonable – I did exceed 500x during testing a couple of times, but it is certainly a huge risk.
Fruit Smash Slot Review Final Thoughts
Argh Slotmill, what are you doing to me! I spent far too long playing this game during testing yet again, confirming that this developer knows a thing or two about creating incredibly fun and entertaining slot machines. The win cap could be a little higher – 6,000x feels a little low when you are asking for 500x to buy the best bonus round – but apart from this, Fruit Smash is easily another win for this developer.
