Fruity Candy Slot (PG Soft) Slot Demo & Review

Fans of Puyo Puyo or Bust-a-Move style puzzlers are in for a treat today with the release of Pocket Games Soft’s (PGSoft) Fruity Candy. The starting layout will be instantly recognisable to anybody who has played either of those popular puzzle video games, but once you begin to play, the resemblance becomes even more uncanny. The game sports an unusual playfield layout that results in between 2000 and 25,088 pay ways per spin. The game’s RTP of 96.75% is a little above average – always a good thing – whilst the maximum win of 10,000x the player’s stake is also superior to many other online slots.

There are several major features included in Fruity Candy – first up, every winning combination will cause the size of the symbol stacks to increase. At the start of each spin, the initial layout has a 5-4-5-4-5 configuration, but this can eventually increase to a much larger 8-7-8-7-8 layout. Clearly, the latter offers a far greater number of pays ways, but there’s more – winning several times from a single paid spin adds multipliers into the mix too, up to a maximum of 5x when the biggest symbol layout is reached. Of course, a game like this would not be complete without a free spins feature, and hitting three scatter symbols will award 10 spins with increased multipliers of up to 10x.

Fruity Candy Slot Paytable
Fruity Candy slot paytable

Fruits and candy are two of the most popular themes used in online slots, so combining these two ideas seems to make perfect sense. Fruits are probably the most prolific of the two genres, but those slots do have a slightly unfair advantage in that the very first slot machines were based on fruits! More recently, games such as Super Fruit Smash and Fruit Shop Frenzy have expanded on the original ‘fruit machine’ formula to such an extent that anybody familiar with the original games would struggle to recognise these updates as slots, I suspect. Meanwhile, PGSoft themselves seem to have a bit of a fascination with candy-inspired slots – they have produced Candy Burst and Candy Bonanza already, so I guess the obvious question would be: what improvements has the developer made for this release?

In truth, it’s a very different type of game – we’ll discuss that more in the next section though and take a look at the games paytable for now. In this regard, the numbers shown on the paytable certainly are not going to impress you – keep in mind that you can hit over 24,000 of them with a 10x multiplier though, and the picture certainly looks a little different! The wild is the top paying symbol, but its return of only 10 coins – equivalent to just 2x the total bet – isn’t exactly going to blow your socks off. And, of course, things only go down from there – the teddy bear will get you 1.6x for all five symbols, whilst the blackcurrant and strawberry offer 1x and 0.8x, respectively. As for the low pays, there are star and heart-shaped candies, which pay 0.6x the total stake for a five of a kind hit, whilst the green and blue candies share the same 0.6x prize.

Choosing your bet amount in Fruity Candy is a multi-stage process that provides a lot of flexibility. First, choose a coin size – this can be €0.02, €0.20, or €2.00. You’ll then need to pick a bet level (or multiplier) between 1 and 10, and finally, there’s a forced base bet of 10 coins. You can also change the amount of your bet directly if you wish.

Base Game & Modifiers

Fruity Candy Slot Base Game

When Fruity Candy is first loaded, you’ll be presented with a 5-4-5-4-5 reel layout that comes with 2,000 payways. That’s already a pretty hefty number of ways, but hitting a win of any size will cause an additional row of symbols to be added with a corresponding increase in payways. The maximum configuration is a 8-7-8-7-8 setup which boasts a massive 25,088 payways.

Multipliers

During the base game, all wins are multiplied by the active multiplier displayed above reels. Any win in the first round will increase your multiplier to 2x; a further win will get you a 3x multiplier; finally, win again during the third round to obtain a 5x multiplier for all subsequent winning combinations.

Fruity Candy Slot Bonus Features

Fruity Candy Slot Free Spins Feature

Free spin symbols can land anywhere on the playfield, and hitting three or more simultaneously will award 10 free spins – plus two more for any extra scatters above the minimum of three.

Free Spins

At the beginning of the bonus round, you’ll notice that the multipliers displayed above the reels will increase to 2x, 4x, 6x, and 10x. If any free spin scatters happen to land during the bonus, the multipliers will be further increased by 1x, 2x, 3x, and 5x respectively, as well as adding two more free spins to your remaining counter.

Pros

  • Above average RTP of 96.75%.
  • Attractive maximum jackpot of 10,000x the total stake
  • Huge multipliers are possible during the bonus round

Cons

  • The regular paytable prizes are tiny – if you only win during the initial symbol drop, you’re guaranteed to win little more than pennies.
  • Even with the multipliers, the only way to get anywhere close to the game's maximum jackpot is via its bonus round.

Final Thoughts

I love the design of this slot, and the way the symbols roll down the grid is definitely reminiscent of puzzlers that I probably spent far too much time playing on the PlayStation back in the day and, in all fairness, quite a few ELK Studios slots. The conditions necessary to achieve a huge win are a little convoluted though, and the base game is little more than an intermission between bonus rounds. That criticism could be levelled at many other slots though, and on the whole, this one is a winner.
