It’s about time we got down to funky town with Blueprint Gaming’s Funky Buddha online slot! This is another machine that is trying so desperately to look cool, but I’m not really sure whether the developers have succeeded on this occasion – I guess it depends on what your definition of “cool” is! This is a ten-line slot, a category which generally does appeal to me, although the RTP of 95% is a little below average, and the stated maximum jackpot of 50,000x seems unrealistic at best – the maximum “MEGA” jackpot prize on the ladder is only 2,000x the total bet, and I can’t imagine it’s possible to win it 25 times in even the luckiest of free spin sessions!
If the visuals do appeal to you, then I’m sure you’ll be curious to hear about the games feature set too – it’s all fairly standard fare, to be honest, with a free spins bonus round and a cash collect feature that is active via special symbols present on reels one through four along with a unique “funky buddha” on reel five that is required to activate any of the other cash collect symbols. This setup felt quite familiar, and a quick look at my recent Blueprint reviews soon revealed that this game appears to be a re-skin of their recent Goonies-themed slot “Hey You Guys!”. As with that machine, you’ll need to unlock each Buddha collect symbol the first time you play at a new casino before the biggest wins can be achieved.
I feel as if Blueprint could have picked a better theme if they were going to re-skin their Goonies game, as this machine will probably be just as divisive with players as that one was. It’s a fun configuration though, so be sure to check out our Funky Buddha demo, available to play below.

Funky Buddha Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Don’t be surprised if you aren’t familiar with The Goonies: Hey You Guys, as that machine was only released a few weeks ago. With that in mind, it’s a little surprising to see Blueprint re-skinning it already – perhaps it hasn’t been performing as well as they had hoped, and they still need to recover their R&D costs. Whatever the case, the engine used for both games is solid, and I preferred it over the developer’s earlier Goonies-themed efforts. I’m just not sure about the theme that they have chosen to go with here – it doesn’t really appeal to me, but your mileage may vary, as they say.
Being a ten-line slot, you would hope for some fairly big wins on the paytable. The highest-paying champagne bottle symbol offers 100x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind, which isn’t bad, but not massively impressive either. I also noticed that the payouts for four and three of a kind wins are relatively tiny too, and you’ll obviously be seeing those much more often – not a great start. The headphones have a return of 20x for all five symbols, followed by the “funky” sunglasses and cocktail, which both share equal payouts of 10x the total bet. As for the low pays, there are just four of these – five aces or kings will fetch you 7.5x your stake back in winnings, whilst five queens or jacks are a little less valuable at 5x each. Unfortunately, there’s no premium attached to the wilds and no payout for the scatters either.
You never know what you will get in terms of betting range with Blueprint at the moment – most of their recent machines have offered fairly limited bet spreads, but this one has minimum/maximum permitted stakes of €0.10 and €100.00, respectively. Thankfully, there are a reasonable number of intermediate bets between the two extremes.
Base Game & Modifiers
The main game of Funky Buddha is a traditional five-reel video slot with three rows and ten fixed paylines. You’ll need at least three matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel to score yourself a win. Where things do begin to get a little more interesting is the game’s Cash Collect feature:
Cash Collect Feature
During every spin, cash collect symbols are present on reels one through four. If one or more of these symbols land simultaneously as the funky Buddha on reel five, you’ll trigger the Cash Collect feature. Note that only the first cash collect symbol is unlocked when you first enter the game. When the cash collect feature is activated, a new symbol will be unlocked until all four have been made available, after which they will remain that way permanently for future sessions at the same casino.
Funky Buddha Slot Bonus Features
Bonus scatter symbols only appear on reels two, three, and four, and you’ll need to land all three of them simultaneously to trigger a set of ten free spins. Unfortunately, there’s no cash prize paid for hitting these symbols.
Free Spins Feature
During free spins, any unlocked Buddha collect symbols from the main game are also available to activate here. On any spin where a funky Buddha lands on reel five, he will collect all of the gold disk cash values displayed on the other four reels. Every funky Buddha symbol that lands will also be collected on the meter displayed along the top of the main reel set, allowing you to win additional free spins and increase the multiplier for the remainder of your bonus round.
Pros
- The five-of-a-kind payouts are relatively high compared to other video slots.
- Once all the buddhas have been unlocked, there’s a good range of features to experience and explore.
Cons
- The stated 50,000x jackpot is hopelessly unrealistic – I’d guess that 2,000x, as shown on the jackpot ladder, is probably the real top prize, at least from a single spin.
Funky Buddha Slot Review Final Thoughts
The theme doesn’t do it for me, but the gameplay is fun, and I was surprised by how generous the machine feels especially considering that the RTP of 95% is a full point lower than the industry average. I may just have been lucky there, though! Overall, this is a mixed bag – better documentation and the unlocking of all the buddhas right from the start, along with a bigger jackpot, would make this a must-play. As it stands, Funky Buddha is a fun yet flawed online slot.
