Gears Of Horus (Pragmatic Play) Slot Demo & Review

You know what’d be funny? At least to me, anyway, as I can be a mischievous so and so on occasion. I’d love to put one of the Pragmatic Play bigwigs on the spot in an interview by asking them to name at least 200 of their company’s slot releases without taking longer than five seconds to think between each. I seriously reckon I’d win, as there is no way anyone can keep accurate track of each new title when the developer releases around 100 new slots each year. I mean, over the years, I’ve probably reviewed a good portion of them, but I’d start to struggle once I got past the obvious Big Bass, John Hunter, and Gates of Olympus clones. The latest release, Gears of Horus, sounds like another I’ll probably forget unless, of course, this 6×6 cluster pays slot with a 96.06% RTP and 10,000x max win proves as popular as those mentioned above.

The main reason many slots are quickly forgotten is that they often look and play similarly to other titles. A good percentage of titles in recent years share a grid format, the tumble feature, and use the scatter pays or cluster pays reel mechanic. Gears of Horus is another that looks all too familiar – although I did notice some slight changes to the norm. The 10,000x max win is double what many of these slots offer, and there is an expanding reels feature tied in with the tumble feature – which makes a nice change. Each winning cascade unlocks a new row or reel up to a maximum of 8×8, and should you unlock all, cascades now guarantee larger wild symbols ranging from 1×2 to 4×4 in size – something else that is a bit different.

Despite the much used Egyptian theme, Gears of Horus is a slot that at least deserves a look because it is different, at least in some areas, to most of what else Pragmatic Play has put out recently. The good news is you can check out those new features for free by opening the Gears of Horus demo slot below.

Gears Of Horus Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Gears Of Horus Slot Paytable
Gears of Horus slot paytable

Are slot players all closet archaeologists or adventurers that dream of Indiana Jones-ing it through temples and tombs? I’ve never understood the furore for the Ancient Egyptian theme, but there must be a huge demand for it, considering how many slots use it. I know some of the best slots of all time have gone with it, such as Play’n Go’s Book of Dead demo, one of the pioneers of the ‘Book of’ genre, and Novomatic’s Book of Ra, the actual pioneer, as Play’n Go literally cloned it. Since those two, however, there’s been a constant deluge of Egyptian slots rolling off the production lines of developers, and for me, it’s a theme that’s become boring.

Ah, well, I guess I have to suck it up once again. It’s so overused that I didn’t even need to look at the paytable before playing to know the symbols that would feature on Gears of Horus. I also remember the days I had to look up what the symbols were – but now I know them off by heart. There’s the Horus symbol, tied with the Wild as the top paying on the reels with 100x the stake rewarded for 15+ clusters. The remaining premiums are the Ankh, Eye of Horus, and Anubis, delivering max payouts of up to 50x, 35x, and 25x the stake. Moving onto the low pays, we have the Heart, Triangle, Circle, and Diamond, which offer top prizes of 15x, 10x, 7.5x, and 5x, respectively, for winning clusters of 15 or more.

Setting the reels in motion on the Gears of Horus slot will set you back between €0.20 and €240.00 per spin. The upper limit here may be capped at some online casinos, but I still don’t see there being any issues in finding a real money bet size to play at, regardless of whether you are a high or low roller.

Gears Of Horus Slot Base Game & Modifiers

Gears Of Horus Slot Base Game
Gears of Horus slot base game

Pragmatic Play has gone with a tried and tested 6×6 grid format for the Gears of Horus slot game, and the cluster pays mechanic to determine wins. You’ll win a payout each time a cluster of 5 or more symbols is connected horizontally or vertically anywhere on the reels.

Tumbling Mechanic

After a winning combo has paid, the symbols involved in the win will vanish from the reels, allowing more to drop in from above through the tumbling reels feature. The new symbols can create additional wins, and the process will repeat until you fail to make a new winning connection.

Expanding Grid & Random Wilds

After every successive cascade win on a single spin, one of the rows or reels will increase by one, and this continues until the grid has grown to 8×8 in size. If cascades continue to roll in after that point, each will deliver a random wild symbol of at least 1×2 size up to a maximum of 4×4.

Gears Of Horus Slot Bonus Features

Gears Of Horus Slot Free Spins Feature
Gears of Horus slot free spins feature

Gears of Horus has a free spins bonus round that features all the above base game elements and also throws a progressive multiplier into the mix. You’ll get 8, 10, or 12 free spins if there are 3, 4, or 5 triggering scatter symbols, respectively, and you’ll receive the same number if you manage to retrigger the feature within the bonus round.

Free Spins Feature

During this bonus, you increase a progressive win multiplier by 1x for each of the first four cascade wins on a spin. That means it’s possible to enjoy spins with a 5x multiplier, the fully unlocked 8×8 reels, and random oversized wilds.

Bonus Buy

If that bonus game sounds too exciting to trigger manually, you can use the bonus buy feature to purchase it for 100x your current stake.

Pros

  • There are a few good features that help differentiate Gears of Horus from the many other grid-style games offered by Pragmatic Play.

Cons

  • When slot reviewers start feeling they’re experts on a particular theme, it is overused.

Gears Of Horus Slot Review Final Thoughts

In a very overcrowded Egyptian slot niche, Gears of Horus does at least offer something slightly different with its expanding reels and random wilds. Whether this will be enough to please the masses, I'm not quite sure, but at least there will be another Pragmatic slot release next week if this one fails to capture the imagination of players.
