You’ll need to match just 15 or more of the same symbol to activate its highest pay value, which seems very achievable on a grid with space for 30 symbols to land on each spin. The premium symbols are all presented as various coloured gemstones, and the most valuable is the Yellow Variant, which will return 10x the total bet for 15+ symbols. Moving on to the game mechanics section now, we can see that there are no paylines to worry about on Gemstones Gold, as all that’s needed to win is to match at least eight of the same symbol anywhere on the screen to receive a payout. These symbols do not need to be touching or in any particular formation; their presence on the grid is all that’s required. Any symbols involved in a win will then be removed from the grid through the falling reels mechanic, creating space for further symbols to drop into play from the top of the reels, hopefully aiding us in forming further winning combinations. This is an important aspect of activating the multiplier element, which we’ll discuss further in the next part of this slot review.
Multiplier Reel
Below the main reels, a single line of row positions can be seen, and this area is referred to as the multiplier reel. At the start of each base game spin, three multiplier values ranging from x2 to x500 will slide into this zone, randomly occupying three of the six available row positions.
Each of these will initially be covered by three blocker layers, and these are cleared, one at a time, by any symbol directly above their position, which is involved in a winning combination. If three lots of wins occur above a multiplier, its value will become unlocked and will subsequently be applied to the total win value once all cascades have been completed in that spin. If more than one multiplier is activated, their values will be summed together before being applied to the win value. All multiplier progress is reset between spins during the base game.

Landing at least three scatter symbols during any single spin will trigger the free spins bonus, awarding ten spins. Any additional scatters that land above the required three will award a further two starting spins each.

During this feature, multiplier values are guaranteed to land in all six row positions on the multiplier reel, which is an uplift on the three seen in the base game. The number of blocker layers is also reduced to just two in the bonus, meaning that two wins in the reel directly above a multiplier value will activate its power. The total of any multiplier built is held between spins for the duration of the feature and will be added to any further multipliers that are activated as it continues to build. However, its value will only be applied to a win if that spin includes the activation of a multiplier. Landing two scatter symbols during the same spin will award five additional free spins.

Gemstones Gold is another high-quality production from PG with solid graphics and gameplay, along with the usual high RTP level that makes you feel valued as a player. It features an innovative, engaging multiplier mechanic that adds value to the base game, but the bonus game is where this really comes to life, holding between spins and reaching a huge height during some features. Compared to some other PG Soft titles, this particular slot does lack a gameplay feature or two, but those aspects do not massively detract from what is a very enjoyable release overall.
