The Gold Rush television show was initially titled Gold Rush: Alaska and followed the lives of six men from Sandy, Oregon, a small town southeast of Portland in the United States. The men had lost their jobs in a recession and decided – bizarrely – to travel to Porcupine Creek, Alaska, to search for gold. Amazingly, the team recovered almost 15 ounces of gold during the show’s first season. The story of the first California gold rush is an enduring tale that never ceases to amaze and shows up frequently in types of popular culture. I’m not going to try and name the characters from the TV show as I’m sure I will only get them wrong, so I will refer to the character symbols by the colour of their backgrounds instead. The highest-paying symbol is the older blue guy, but he’s only worth 6x your total stake for a full payline of five of a kind! The green baseball cap-wearing dude is worth 4x for all five symbols, followed by the pink female at 3x and the red-bearded guy at 2.5x. There are two medium pays represented by pieces of gold testing equipment with returns of 2.5x and 1.5x, whilst all low-paying royals share identical returns of 1.5x for a five-of-a-kind combination.
When playing this game in demo mode, the minimum/maximum available bets are €0.10 and €500.00, respectively. The maximum when playing for real money is likely to be much lower than this. Even if this reduces the number of stake sizes you can play at, I still feel confident in saying there will be a bet size to play at this comparable to your bankroll.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of Gold Rush: Cash Collect looks woefully simplistic for a licensed slot from a top-tier developer. The machine uses a standard 5×3 playfield, spanned by 30 fixed paylines, and you’ll need at least three matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel to bag yourself a prize.
Cash Collect Feature
The Cash Collect symbol appears on reel five only during the base game. Each time the symbol lands, it will collect all visible cash prizes, diamonds, and free spins.
Cash prizes can be worth 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x, or 15x, the total bet, whilst free spins come in batches of three, four, five, seven, or ten. Each diamond symbol collected will award one of the four jackpot prizes: the MINI (20x bet), MINOR (50x bet), MAJOR (200x Bet), or GRAND (500x bet). There is no limit to the number of jackpot prizes that can be won in a single spin.
Nudge Feature
If you notice the Cash Collect symbol scrolling just out of view on reel five during a base game spin, you should cross your fingers quickly! A random nudge modifier can sometimes kick in on such ‘near misses’, nudging the Cash Collect symbol back into view.
Gold Rush Cash Collect Slot Bonus Features
The main bonus round can only be won by simultaneously hitting the Cash Collect symbol on reel five as one or more free spin symbols land on reels one through four. The number of free games awarded equals the sum of all numbers shown on any visible free game coin symbols.
Free Spins
Any Cash Collect symbols that land on the reels during the free games mode will collect any visible cash prizes, diamonds, or additional free games, just as in the base game. The difference here is that the Cash Collect symbol now appears on all five reels rather than just the rightmost reel.
Additionally, the Cash Collect symbol is now a walking symbol that will move down one position on the reel where it lands on each spin. For example, if a Cash Collect symbol appears at the top of a reel, you are guaranteed to benefit from it for the next three spins in a row whilst it moves towards the bottom position. The free games can be re-triggered indefinitely.
Pay Dirt Feature
During the free spins feature, an additional ‘pay dirt’ modifier is available, represented by excavators appearing on top of the reel set before the start of a spin. When this occurs, additional cash prizes, free games, diamonds, cash collect symbols, and stacked wilds are added to the reels. This makes it much more likely that the next spin will award something exciting!
Gold Rush Cash Collect Slot Review Final Thoughts
This is effectively just a reskin of the previous Cash Collect games from Playtech, but that doesn’t make it any less fun! However, the base game payouts could be much better, and you really need to get lucky during the bonus round to stand a chance of winning anything substantial.
