Here we go again, over to the California gold rush – it must have been exciting to be alive at that time, that’s for sure, but dangerous too – no sooner have you found a nugget, but you get a bullet to the head, and it belongs to somebody else… it must have been challenging work to be a successful gold miner in those days. I’ve had to rewrite this section because I mistakenly believed the paytable was showing as stake multiples. How wrong I was, sadly. In fact, after reading the documentation, I am still unclear how the numbers on the paytable relate to the winnings I truly receive whilst playing; here’s an example, I hit two lines of three queens, which is listed on the paytable as 5, however, my payout was 0.02 per line. Then I had a thought – hang on I felt kind of silly when my brain started working again – as I was only betting 0.10, and there are 25 pay lines, that means I was only betting 0.4 per line. And what is 0.4×5? Ah yes, 0.02. In my view, this is a horrible way to arrange your paytable, as players tend to think of their bets in terms of the total stake since the option to choose how many lines they wish to play was removed.
So, bottom line? You’ll need to divide everything by 25. This means the wild is worth 20x your total stake, the same as a five-of-a-kind combination of a truckload of gold. Next up, we have… a bag of gold, I think? That’s 8x your stake for a full payline of five, whilst the lantern will get you a… stunning 6x, and the hammer and nuggets pay just 5x your total bet for a full payline of five-of-a-kind. I’m sure this game will have more to offer, though, so stick around!
Finally, you can choose to bet between €0.10 and €40.00 per spin… I’d stick below ten if I were you, but hey, what is it the cool cats say these days? YOLO!
Base Game & Modifiers
Over to the base game, which is a little bit more interesting than you might think. Sure, it’s a 5×3 playfield with 25 paylines – something we’ve seen thousands of times before – but here’s where things get interesting:

Hit six golden coins on a single spin, and you score yourself a gold re-spin feature with six spins to try and fill the grid with gold coins. Each coin has a value between 1x and 20x your current stake. My only complaint with this feature is that it delivers a hell of a lot of dead spins. Of course, maybe I was just unlucky, but play it yourself and see what you think.
There are two special symbols in this mode, too – a collect symbol which will turn into a gold coin worth the same amount as all over gold coins on-screen – I tested this bonus round seven times before I saw this symbol appear, but it was worth the wait as my final total was nearly 200x! I wouldn’t have made it that far without…
The dynamite symbol! Unfortunately, it doesn’t explode into a huge prize, but it does award you an extra re-spin. You can hit two or three of these at once and get your re-spin total up to more than 10 spins, which will be essential if you want a chance of hitting the….

And finally, there are two bonus buy options in this game, both of which were greyed out when I first began to test the game – living in the UK sucks sometimes. After using a VPN to escape the nanny-state dystopia, it became clear that you can buy the full free spins bonus for 50x your current stake, which seems like an absolute bargain to me, whilst the gold coin re-spin feature is a little cheaper at 40x.
I still feel like that is a bargain price, too, even though I came out with a loss many times during testing… the winning rounds more than covered my losses! If you can use these facilities, I would strongly advise doing so.

Gold Rush: Johnny Cash is a well-designed slot with a beautiful presentation. The way that the payout mechanics are expressed to the player is poor and could do with some urgent improvement, but in reality, this is only a minor niggle – it might bother us reviewers, but I’d imagine it probably doesn’t bother too many of you!
