Gold (Big Time Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

Most people in the UK and possibly a few in the U.S. will have heard of the British new wave band from the 80s, Spandau Ballet. While the band released several hit songs, without a doubt, the biggest was ‘Gold’, a tune that is still widely played today. In fact, the band’s lead singer, Tony Hadley, has been quoted as saying he has made more money in royalties for that song since the turn of the century than he made from it back in the 1980s. Why are we discussing a band that was big decades ago? Well, take a look at the slot title at the top of this review and have a guess. Gold is one of the first slots that Big Time Gaming released, and it features that iconic song from Spandau Ballet, a 95.25% RTP and a 12,500x the stake maximum win.

Looking at those stats, you can see that even early on, Big Time Gaming was happy to go big in terms of maximum wins. 12,500x is bigger than what most slots offer even today, and Gold was released a decade ago in 2014! The features on Gold are a lot more basic, however, as there’s only a wild symbol with a 2x win multiplier and a free spins bonus that multiplies payouts of winning combinations by 3x or 5x depending on whether a wild symbol contributed to the win.

It’s fair to say that Big Time Gaming has come along from those early days, mainly due to the Megaways mechanic the studio developed that the company now leases out to developers, and there’s a lot of them, who want to use it. However, if you’re interested in playing some other earlier slots from Big Time Gaming, I suggest you have a few spins on Bonanza, one of the first slots to feature Megaways. Alternatively, Danger High Voltage is another slot that is considered one of BTG’s best early releases.

Heading over to the paytable, it’s the Wild symbol that has the slot’s biggest standalone payout, with 500x the stake paid when five of them line up across a payline. The Scatter, which pays anywhere in view, comes next and is worth 100x. As for the regular symbols, the Triple Bars and the Golden Car top the rest with a 37.5x return for five in a row, the Watch rewards up to 20x, the Credit Card and Ring max out with 12.5x, and the Ace pays up to 6.25x. Each of the King, Queen, Jack, Ten, and Nine have a top return of 5x the stake. It’s often quite a mixed bag when you view the staking structure on a Big Time Gaming slot, with some games offering a much wider choice than others. In the case of Gold, players can spin from a minimum of €0.20 up to a maximum of €50.

Gold Slot Base Game & Modifiers

Gold Slot
Gold Slot base game

Gold features a traditional 5×3 reel configuration and 20 fixed paylines. You’ll need three matching symbols along those paylines (two in the case of the Triple Bar & Car) to form winning combinations.

Wild Symbols

As most of you know, wild symbols act as wild cards by substituting for all regular symbols when winning combinations can be formed. They do the same on Gold, but on top of that, they’ll double the payouts of the wins they help create.

Gold Slot Bonus Features

While those wild symbols increase the winning potential in the base game, they’re even more valuable in Gold’s free spins bonus, triggered when three or more scatter symbols land in any position on the reels.

Free Spins Feature

You receive an initial 15 free spins when the bonus round begins, but it’s possible to win up to 180 in total if you’re lucky enough to continue retriggering the bonus by landing three or more scatters from within it. Any wins that land during the free spins are automatically multiplied by 3x, but if a wild symbol contributes to them, that is increased to 5x. By the way, during the bonus game, you get to hear Spandau Ballet’s ‘Gold’ played out!

Pros

  • It is a big maximum win, considering the age of the Gold slot.
  • The iconic music that plays out in the bonus feature.

Cons

  • The RTP is below the average.
  • Lacks any exciting features.

Gold Slot Review Final Thoughts

Gold is not a slot that can compete with many of Big Time Gaming’s more modern releases regarding innovation, mechanics, and bonus features, so don’t go into it expecting it will. Instead, I suggest playing this slot to see just how far the studio has come since its release. It’s still a fairly entertaining slot, by the way, and you’ll also see the same visual style that BTG still uses today.
