So just what is the deal with the Calavera anyway? Well, according to Wikipedia, it is a representation of a human skull and is most often used to describe edible or decorative skulls made from either sugar or clay. These artefacts are most often used in the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead and the Roman Catholic holiday known as All Souls’ Day. The term can also refer to any artistic representation of a skull. Still, the most widely known Calaveras are created with cane sugar before being decorated with coloured foils, icing, beads, and feathers. The “Golden” Calaveras featured in this game don’t seem to resemble this typical description, but it sure makes for an interesting and unique theme for an online slot!
Yet again, I must admit to being a little uninformed regarding some of the symbols in an online slot… sigh. I wondered if Google Lens could tell me what some of these things are, but the only one it recognised was the sombrero. Yes, Google, thanks for that; I know what those are! I’m going to call the highest-paying symbol the red hot water bottle… that is on fire… and is decorated with a skull and crossbones. Yes, I’m sure that’s what it is. A full pay line of five-of-a-kind of these will pay you 50x your bet, whilst the guitar symbol is worth 40x for all five. The green sombrero will pay you 30x for five-of-a-kind, as will the three candles. That completes the high-paying part of the paytable – only four symbols doesn’t seem like much, but all symbols are stacked on the reels, and the setup seems to work well.

The golden Calavera is a mystery symbol that can appear as a regular-sized symbol but also as 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4 mega symbols. The spin will always result in a guaranteed win when these larger variants appear. Like other games that feature a mystery symbol, all golden Calaveras will transform into one matching symbol after the reels stop spinning.
Consecutive Spin Multiplier
This is a pretty unique feature – if you win several times on consecutive spins, an increasing multiplier will be applied to your winnings. If you win again on the next spin, the multiplier for the following paid spin will increase. You can see your current multiplier at the bottom of the main reel set, starting with 2x and finishing at a maximum of 100x, after which any further winning spins will not increase the multiplier further. However, the 100x multiplier will still be applied.

The free spins bonus round starts at a 1x multiplier, increasing by 1x with each subsequent spin. A three-scatter trigger will award just 10 free spins, but you can also win 20, 50, or 100 free spins when the feature is triggered by more than three scatter symbols.

For a cost of 100x the regular bet, you can opt to skip the base game and go straight to the free spins feature. I wish the UKGC had not outlawed these types of features, as it can be a lot of fun sometimes to go straight to the highest-paying parts of your favourite slots.
