The Golden Goddess video slot is a classic of the Las Vegas Strip, brought over to the internet back in 2013 by industry stalwarts Interactive Gaming Technology (IGT). These guys have been around the block several times, so they know a thing about what makes slot gamers tick. They also know what casinos like too, and sadly the adjustable RTP of the land-based game has made it into this version of the game. It’s much less egregious than the Vegas game, however; 93.5% at the bottom end to the industry average of 96% at the top. The game retains the 40 pay lines of the original along with the ultra-low variance and maximum win of 1,000x your stake per spin.
In an industry being positively flooded with super high variance online slots today, its almost refreshing to play one that isn’t going to empty your bankroll out on the pavement outside the casino (metaphorically speaking) within the first ten minutes of play. Almost. Golden Goddess kind of goes a little bit too far in the opposite direction – even with it’s super stacks and free spin features.

Golden Goddess Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Whilst a lot of games that use gods and goddesses as their protagonists seem to focus on mythological gods, Golden Goddess instead provides us with an entirely new cast of characters. There are two gods, and two mythological creatures making up this cast, so there aren’t too many symbols to remember. The closest match in terms of the theme would probably be something like 300 Shields, 12 Trojan Mysteries, or the Age of the Gods games from Playtech. The graphics hold up well for a game that is almost a decade old now, although I have a niggling feeling they may have been touched up a bit when the game was converted to HTML5. The sound is nicely ambient most of the time, although the “big win” sound effects do get a bit much considering how low most of your wins are actually going to be.
I mentioned that there are two “god” characters who make up the upper portion of the paytable, although there is one additional symbol – the games “Golden Goddess” logo. I expected this to also act as a wild, as game logos do in many other slots, and at first didn’t think this was the case – upon further inspection, the paytable indicates that it does. The wild also has a payout of 1,000 coins for five-of-a-kind however, but it is also the only symbol which is not stacked on the reels too. This is a real disappointment as it means you can only hit a single line of these symbols at once, and when you do it still only pays the same 50x as a full screen of the goddess symbol!
The betting range of Golden Goddess video slot begins at €0.40 per spin – a penny a line. But as for the upper end of the scale… wow. I checked two different demo versions of the game just to be sure – one of them maxed out at €800.00(!) per spin. I thought to myself… NOBODY is going to offer that, never mind play it – are they? Then I checked the second demo. €1,200 per spin?! This is ludicrous, even for a low variance game. I can finally understand why you see so many people playing this game at enormous bet sizes on YouTube whilst in Las Vegas, however – wins come very frequently, and even 250x your stake is a monster at these kinds of stakes.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base gameplay is fairly simple in the Golden Goddess slot game. It’s a typical 5×3 layout with 40 paylines, and stacked symbols on every reel. One thing that isn’t instantly apparent though is the Super Stacks feature, which I’ll explain here:
Super Stacks Feature
At the beginning of each spin, one symbol will be chosen as the “Super Stack” for that spin. Each reel contains a huge grouping of stacked symbols, and this feature changes the contents of these stacks from one spin to the next. This means that you may have the top paying Goddess symbol stacked on reels on one spin, then the lowest Ten symbol on the next. On the plus side, however, the Super Stacks only include picture symbols during the free spins feature.
Golden Goddess Slot Free Spins Feature
Hitting the free spins in Golden Goddess online slot feels like it should be very difficult – you need nine matching rose symbols in the centre of the screen to activate the free spins feature. These symbols have no payout of their own either, so cross your fingers you get a couple of good spins during the bonus!
At the beginning of the free spins bonus, you will be awarded seven free spins and asked to choose from the nine triggering rose symbols to determine which symbol will fill the Super Stacks during your bonus round. The lowest possible symbol you can select is the white dove, which pays 20 coins per line, whilst the highest is the goddess who pays 50 coins per line as we mentioned previously.
I double checked the paytable three times because the pay outs for the free spins feature are listed separately from those of the main game, but could not find any difference between the two paytables – I wonder why IGT chose to display it in this way? During free spins, stacks occur much more frequently than in the main game, and full screens of matching symbols do come along quite often. There’s only one issue here – because the super stacks convert so many spots into matching symbols, you are very unlikely to win anything unless you land full stacks during the free spins feature.
This isn’t as big a problem as it may sound, however, because the stacks are definitely much bigger here and you will frequently receive at least one full screen of your stacked symbol every bonus. During testing, I had as many as three, and I only played for around an hour! I’ve heard that some players have managed to score a full screen of stacked symbols on all seven of their free spins, and this seems completely realistic to me.
Golden Goddess Slot Review Final Thoughts
Something about Golden Goddess gives away its roots as a land-based slot game – the RTP has been increased, so thankfully that isn’t it. I guess it’s something to do with the very narrow range of pay outs that the game offers. If I was ever going to go crazy and bet huge amounts on every spin, this is probably the game I would choose for the job. Any other time though, the maximum win of 1,000x your stake from a single spin just seems a bit low in today’s market.
By the way – look out for the upgraded MegaJackpots Golden Goddess if you are into progressive jackpot slots. The paytable is precisely the same as this game though, unfortunately.
