You might think that Gorilla Madness is an animal-themed online slot, and I guess that is a true statement. Yet, at the same time, gorillas are pretty much a category of their own, too! Moving on to the paytable, you’ll see a golden gorilla on the first page which is actually the games’ scatter symbol, despite that not being mentioned here. The golden gorilla will pay you 122.22x your bet when all five appear on the reels, representing a reasonable premium above the 14.66x paid for three scatter symbols. A regular-looking gorilla is the highest paying regular symbol and has a return of 27.77x your bet for a full pay way of five-of-a-kind. The female gorilla is worth half as much as her male counterpart – everybody scream sexist with me! – meaning 13.88x your bet for all five of her symbols. The wagering options in Gorilla Madness are, well… madness! The minimum bet per spin is €0.18, which would be strange enough, but the next steps available are €0.38, €0.68, then €0.88. There seems to be no pattern to this, and the maximum bet eventually appears as €88.00 per spin. These unusual bet sizes result in equally unusual multiples for everything on the paytable and the four jackpot prizes. I cannot help but wonder why Light & Wonder didn’t opt for a more sensible figure, such as €0.20 instead.
Base Game & Modifiers
Moving on to the base game now, Gorilla Madness uses a standard five reel, three row layout. The game has all 243 possible payways across the grid activated, meaning that you only need to score three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left to win a prize. Wild symbols are included on reels two, three, and four only and even substitute for the scatter symbols, which is an unusual but very welcome feature.
Gorilla Madness Slot Bonus Features
Hitting three or more scatter symbols during the base game will trigger the free spin bonus round. You will always receive ten free spins regardless of the number of triggering scatters, but you will also be paid a cash prize to compensate for any additional scatters above the minimum of three.

The main benefit of the free spins feature is that all of the low-paying royal symbols are removed from the reels. This does make it slightly easier to hit full payways of the more valuable symbols. Still, it would have been nice if the developer had also included a multiplier or some other additional feature in this mode.
On a brighter note, my results from the free spins feature were generally very good during testing. You can also re-trigger the feature by hitting three or more scatters whilst the bonus is in play, and I did manage this twice during my testing, which suggests that re-triggers occur relatively frequently.
Jackpot Feature
The jackpot feature can trigger randomly on any spin that includes one or more wild symbols. Once the jackpot feature has been triggered, you will be taken to a separate screen displaying 12 golden coins. There are three coins for each of the games four jackpot prizes.
You will then be asked to start choosing coins until you have revealed three that show matching symbols, and the corresponding jackpot will be paid:

This is a relatively simple online slot, but I still had plenty of fun playing and testing the game while writing this review. The presentation is excellent, and the bonus round seems to have some big win potential. All things considered, Gorilla Madness seems like a reasonable release for Light & Wonder.
