The theme of Great Gold is… sigh… yet more fruits. Come on developers; surely you can do us a little better than fruit-filled reels once in a while? Don’t get me wrong, Great Gold looks great, and the symbols are well-drawn, but it’s just more plums, oranges, cherries and the like with some Lucky Sevens and four-leaf clovers thrown in for good measure. There isn’t anything original or inspiring about it, that’s for sure. However, I do appreciate the fact this is a ten-line game with a huge playfield – this means that we should be able to expect relatively large numbers on the paytable.
How does that prediction work out? Firstly, I have to point out that Red Tiger doesn’t bother spending the time to make their paytables self-updating. This may be just a minor niggle for many people, but it really frustrates me – what do these numbers MEAN?! Let’s start with the wild and the lucky seven, both of which pay “500” for a full pay line of five-of-a-kind. The number refers to coins, and each spin is played with 10 coins multiplied by your bet level – at €1.00 per spin, you are playing 10x€1.00 coins, so winning 500 means you will win 500 of those €1.00 coins or 50x your current bet. The next step down is the crown at 200 or 20x your bet, the blue star at 15x, the four-leaved clover at 10x, and the lower-paying fruit symbols. The scatters have no payout of their own, sadly, and to be honest; I was really hoping to see something better than this on the paytable. Ten pay lines on a 5×4 grid should leave room for some decent numbers, but I guess the stacked wild symbols must limit how much Red Tiger can offer.
And finally, the stakes – the minimum bet is a sensible €0.10 per spin or a penny per line, whilst the maximum is also genuinely sane at €10.00 per paid spin. I have to say I’m surprised – developers always love to add the facility to bet an hour’s wage every couple of seconds, normally!
Base Game & Modifiers
Time to get spinning! Just to remind you, the Great Gold online slot uses a 5×4 playfield with ten fixed paylines, which is a very low number for an enlarged reel set. Three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left will award a payout, and there is a single base game modifier detailed below:
Random Wilds Modifier
At the start of any spin, keep your eyes out for the reels going a little bit crazy each time this mod kicks in! A random number of wilds will be added to the reels in various positions, but my experience was that this modifier often won’t provide any real benefit as the large playfield means that the wilds end up being far too dispersed to be useful.
If you manage to land many wilds from the following spin simultaneously with the modifier, then I can see this being a major benefit. Still, otherwise, I found this modifier slightly disappointing, if I’m honest. My sample size was relatively small, but that is the result of the mod not kicking in frequently, so is it a reason to ignore the poor results?
Great Gold Slot Free Spins Feature
Nearing the end of my time reviewing Great Gold now, and I haven’t found too much to get excited about yet – can the bonus round save the day? There is no bonus buy feature, sadly, so I couldn’t test it out a large number of times. You’ll need to hit three scatter symbols to trigger the bonus, which only appear on reels one, three, and five. But is it any good?
The moment of truth – how does the bonus round shape up on what has so far been an unremarkable online slot? Actually, I was genuinely surprised! Above each of the reels, you will see a meter in place containing four bulbs. Each time a wild symbol lands, one of the bulbs above that reel will become lit. When all four have been lit up, the reel below will be filled with wilds which will remain sticky until the end of the feature. Furthermore, each completed reel will award 2 extra free spins.
I expect that the calculated maximum jackpot provided in the opening paragraph (7,608x your bet) is won by hitting all five stacks during this feature at an early stage. Each full screen would be worth 500x your bet, and five stacks would boost you up to 20 free spins; this gives a theoretical max of 10,000x or, as Red Tiger already calculated, an observer maximum of 7,608x your bet.
Great Gold Slot Review Final Thoughts
I had almost given up on Great Gold, but the bonus round somehow managed to pull things back from the brink and convince me that this is a slot worthy of your time. There isn’t a considerable amount to it, and you are basically just playing for the bonus rounds, but isn’t that the case with almost every online slot? There’s no question that it has its flaws, but on the whole, this is a win for Red Tiger.
