Game Overview
In Norse mythology, Heimdall was a god, the son of Odin, and had… wait for it… nine mothers? Nope, I have no idea how that one works, but hopefully, I’ll be able to give you a better handle on Kalamba Games‘ new Heimdall’s Gate online slot! This 4,096 pay-way machine has an exceptionally high RTP of 97.21% – a great start, but amazingly this can increase further up to a maximum of 97.89% if the most expensive bonus buy option is utilised as well. There’s no mention of a maximum jackpot cap anywhere in the game’s paytable of help pages, unfortunately – or perhaps fortunately, if there really is no cap! The feature set would suggest that this is going to be a very high volatility game, though, so keep that in mind when deciding how much you are going to bet per spin.
And just what are those features? Let’s start with the three different wild symbols – there’s a regular common-or-garden variety, plus a blue 2x multiplier wild and a red 3x multiplier variant. These symbols can also multiplier each other, should more than one occur in a single winning payway. There are two free spin modes, each with a different set of scatter symbols on the reels. These scatters are represented by swords and horns, and you’ll be collecting these during the base game to decide how many free spins you will receive when you eventually hit the three symbols necessary to trigger a bonus round. If that sounds too much effort, you can bypass the base game entirely using the bonus buy menu. There are four options here, ranging in price between around 20x and 100x the normal cost per spin.
The low cost of the bonus buy facility and the high RTP deserve to give this game a boost in the popularity stakes – why not check out our free demo slot of Heimdall’s Gate below?
Heimdall’s Gate Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
We’d be here for quite a while if I were to begin making a list of all the Norse mythology-inspired online slots out there! I’m not sure if Microgaming’s Thunderstruck was the very first game to utilise the theme, but if it wasn’t, then it was certainly responsible for kickstarting a major trend within the industry. That game recently got a modern update in the form of Thunderstruck Stormchaser – a somewhat disappointing game that failed to match the brilliance of the original classics. Heimdall’s Gate has much more in common with games such as Vikings Unleashed Megaways and Pragmatic Play’s Kingdom of ASGard, and looks every bit as good as those previous releases as well.
The two scatter symbols share the top spot on the paytable, which can award up to 50x the total bet should all six land simultaneously. During the bonus round, both of these symbols are replaced with a third scatter – a shield – which also pays 50x for six symbols and awards up to 15 additional free spins. As for the regular symbols, Heimdall takes the top spot, as you would probably expect and offers a payout of 5x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. We’ve got a familiar cast of characters making up the rest of the high-paying spots – Valkyrie, and Odin will get you 4.125x your bet for all six symbols, whilst Loki and Thor are a little less valuable at 3.33x for a full payway. Finally, there are six low-paying royal symbols – six aces or kings will get you 2x your bet, whilst six queens, jacks, tens, or nines return a little less at 1.66x each.
The minimum bet available in Heimdall’s Gate is €0.30 per spin, whilst the maximum limit has been set at €75.00. Towards the bottom end of this range, the available bets go up in €0.30 increments, and the gaps only start growing larger once you get past €3.00 per spin – a sensible arrangement that should suit most players.
Base Game & Modifiers
The basic gameplay of Heimdall’s Gate takes place on a six column, four row playfield, making for a total of 4,096 payways. The art style is very compact, so the slot doesn’t look like such a monster at first glance! Most symbols require at least three matches starting from the leftmost reel to award a win, but the highest-paying Heimdall and scatter symbols also have a small prize for just two matching symbols.
Wild Symbols
The regular wild symbol has a red/orange appearance and can substitute for all other symbols except for the sword and horn. There are two multiplier wilds available as well – the 2x variant has a blue colour, whilst the 3x wild shares the same colour as the regular wild.
Scatter Collection
During the base game, free spins are accumulated by collecting swords and horns whenever one or two of them land on a single spin. The number of symbols collected is displayed above the main reel set.
Heimdall’s Gate Slot Bonus Features
The swords and horns that you collect during the base game are also used to trigger their respective free spin modes. You’ll need at least three matching symbols of one type to start the bonus round – the number of spins you will receive is determined by the number of symbols you collect during the base game.
Free Spins
The two free spin modes are largely identical – the only difference is that the sword spins feature 2x multiplier wilds, whilst the horn spins include the more valuable 3x variety.
During the free spins mode, the horn and sword symbols are replaced with a new shield scatter that can re-trigger up to 15 additional free spins should six of them land on the reels.
Bonus Buy
The bonus buy menu has four options; the cheapest offers seven spins with 2x multiplier wilds and costs just 20.36x the normal price per spin. The remaining three options offer 15 spins with 2x wilds for 43.56x, 12 spins with 3x wilds for 63.16x, and 20 spins with 3x wilds at 105x the cost of a single spin.
Furthermore, all four of these options offer a slight increase in RTP over the standard theoretical payout of 97.21% – in order of cost, the new RTP figures are 97.46%, 97.63%, 97.63%, and 97.89%.
Pros
- Amazingly high RTP of almost 98% when using the bonus buy facility.
- The scatter collection feature ensures that the longer you wait for a bonus round, the better it will likely be.
- Cheap bonus buy facility with options starting at just 20x the normal spin price.
Cons
- The graphics look a little basic, especially the low-paying symbols.
- The free spins mode could be better – apart from the multiplier wilds, it doesn’t offer much above what you get in the base game.
Final Thoughts
I’ve enjoyed testing out Heimdall’s Gate whilst writing this review, and I will probably give it a few spins in real money mode once it goes on general release. It’s unlikely to become a personal favourite, but the high RTP makes it a notable release that should provide a lot of play time – even if you’re playing with a smaller bankroll.
