It’s about to get very hot in here as we dive into the depths of hell for this review. Hellapenos is a five-reel slot game operating on a 3-3-4-4-4 grid layout, created by developer Thunderkick. It features a maximum payout of 5,000x and a healthy RTP of 96.19%.
Will this release leave us with a warm fuzzy feeling, or will we seek repentance and beg to leave this hellhole? Let’s enter the land of sin and find out. Hellapenos is set in the visually impressive backdrop of a devil’s lair, featuring glowing skulls and smouldering lava. The action takes place on a five-reel grid; the first two reels are three rows high, and the last three are four rows tall. It incorporates 100 fixed paylines, and upon initial inspection, there seem to be plenty of features to keep us entertained. Hellapenos Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Whilst trying out some initial spins on the Hellapenos slot, the expanding devil symbols, in particular, struck me as being eerily similar to several releases from Hacksaw Gaming, which also feature symbols that can expand into wilds. You’ll know what I mean if you’ve played the Xmas Drop slot and R.I.P City slot before, both of which are great games in their own right. Before we draw too many criticisms though, let’s take a more thorough look into the features of Hellapenos, starting with the paytable.
The Devil Dog is the top symbol on Hellapenos and will return 5x your stake for each line of five symbols. Secondly, we have the Flying Bottle of Red Chilli Sauce at 3x, followed by the Green Bottle at 2.5x, the Purple Bottle at 2x, and the Blue Bottle at 1.5x. The non-premium symbols are the standard A, K, Q, J and 10, which will pay 1x, 0.9x, 0.8x, 0.7x and 0.6x, respectively, for each line of five symbols. These seem like relatively low values, but we must consider that these can dramatically increase once the multiplier values come into effect.
There is an impressive array of stake size options available on Hellapenos, with 14 in total. These range from a low of €0.10 all the way up to €100.00, with plenty of options in between. This should ensure a suitable stake is available for all players.
Hellapenos Slot Base Game
When it comes to the most basic game mechanics, Hellapenos pays from left to right across a 3-3-4-4-4 reel matrix, and all wins must feature a minimum of three symbols connecting across at least one of its 100 paylines. All wins must commence on the leftmost reel with no gaps between reels.
Multiplier Wild
The multiplier wild symbol, a Red Chilli in the shape of a W, has a multiplier value of x2. It substitutes for all other game symbols other than the scatter and expanding devil. A win along a connected payline that includes one or more multiplier wild symbols will be increased by the relevant accumulated value. A maximum of three multiplier wilds can be connected along any one line, and the largest value that can be achieved is x8 (2x2x2=8).
Random Wilds
Activated randomly, the symbols on the two leftmost reels will always appear stacked. If matching symbols are landed covering all three rows on reels one and two during this spin, then 1-3 multiplier wild symbols will be placed on reels 3-5.
Expanding Devil Symbols
A maximum of one expanding devil symbol can land on each reel from reels 3-5. If it stops in a position that forms part of a win line, it will expand to cover that entire reel and substitute for all symbols other than the scatter. If it has not landed on a winline, it will not expand and will not act as a wild. If an expanding devil symbol expands through one or more multiplier wild symbols, then its expanded form will adopt those multipliers, again covering the entire reel. If a winning combination spans more than one expanding devil symbol, the multiplier values will be multiplied and applied to the win. The total multiplier value available in this feature ranges from x2 to x64.
Hellapenos Slot Bonus Features
There is one main bonus feature on Thunderkick’s Hellapenos slot, and three scatter symbols landing anywhere on reels 3-5 during a single game round will trigger it awarding seven free spins.
Free Spins Feature
During the bonus game, an expanding devil symbol landing on reels 3-5 will activate that reel for the remainder of the free spins, and an additional three spins will be awarded. Once active, an expanding devil symbol will be introduced to that reel on every spin for the remainder of the bonus. If these symbols are part of a winning combination, they will expand to cover the entire reel, acting as a wild.
Bonus Buy
Fans of the bonus buy slots will be pleased to find out that the free spins feature can triggered instantly on Hellapenos at the cost of 70x bet.

Hellapenos Slot Review Final Thoughts
Thunderkick has produced an entertaining game by taking a somewhat evil and spicy theme and giving it a cartoon makeover reminiscent of a freshly coloured, vibrant tattoo. There’s just the right balance between the base game and bonus action to keep the player engaged, with elements from the free spins round present within the main game. My only real negative here is that the 5,000x maximum win does feel a bit low for a game of this type; I think that it could have easily been double that. However, overall, it’s a solid game and one that I’ll certainly be returning to.
