Game Overview
They say that legends never die, and in the case of Elvis, they might just be right – despite his death at the age of just 42, the performer is potentially even more well-known today than he was during his active years between 1953 and 1977. Elvis shows up regularly in many aspects of popular culture, as you might expect for somebody regarded as being one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century! So, onto the Pragmatic Play slot Hellivs Wild then. The game’s basic statistics are not so significant; however – 243 ways to win, a 96.01% RTP (increasing to 96.05% if the bonus bet is enabled), and a 5,000x jackpot are all very much average by today’s standards.
Fortunately, Pragmatic has thrown in a decent number of features to keep things interesting. The first of these is the ‘Golden Wild’, which looks like the gold discs you’ll often see on successful musician’s walls after they achieve a million sales. The Golden Wild hits with a starting multiplier of 1x, triggers a free re-spin mode, and progresses through a series of nudges and ascending multipliers. The main bonus round is a free spin feature that awards up to 15 rounds with enhanced Golden Wilds. As with most of Pragmatic Play’s games, the developer has included both bonus bet and bonus buy facilities for those who wish to use them.
I’m kind of pleased to say that, on this occasion, the subject of this game is a little before my time! So many games make me feel old nowadays… does Elvis make you feel old? If so, I’m sure you’ll want to check out our free demo slot of Hellvis Wild anyway – it’s available to play below:
Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Whilst there have been a couple of relatively ‘standard’ Elvis-themed slots released over the years – Red Tiger’s Rock’n’Lock springs to mind – it seems as if ‘alternative’ takes on the singer are by far the most popular with both developers and players alike. Take BGaming’s Elvis Frog Trueways, for example – I’m not sure exactly how pleased the Elvis estate must be with their beloved property being turned into a singing frog, but it sure is popular! This game sits squarely in between these two camps – Elvis is recognisable as himself, but he’s been turned into a horned ‘Hellvis’ version of himself who seems to be a fan of over-the-top heavy metal riffs, judging by the soundtrack included with the release! Whilst this is obviously subjective, I do think that the look and feel of the game works well.
Unfortunately, the prizes shown on the paytable aren’t particularly exciting – the Wild is the highest-paying of the bunch, but it’s still only worth 10x the total bet for a full payway of five of a kind. The Scatters will pay 5x the bet for all five symbols as well – it’s not much, but it’s better than nothing in the current online casino environment where scatters typically have no cash payouts attached to them at all. As for the regular symbols, we’ve got a Two-Fingered Salute worth 2x the bet for all five symbols, 1.5x for the Microphone, 1.25x for the Dog Collar, and 1x for the Guitar Pick. As for the low pays, the prizes awarded for these range between 0.75x for five aces down to 0.5x for five jacks.
The default betting range includes minimum/maximum wagers of €0.20 and €100.00, respectively, but it’s also possible to enable the ante bet for double the odds of triggering a bonus round. This costs a 50% premium on top of the normal price per spin, resulting in minimum/maximum bets of €0.30 and €150.00 and a slight boost to the RTP.
Base Game & Modifiers
The basic gameplay of Hellvis Wild revolves around a standard five reel, three row video slot layout. Every possible path from left to right is activated for payouts – a total of 243 payways – and all symbols, with the exception of the highest-paying two-finger salute, require at least three symbols to award a win.
Golden Wild Symbol
The ‘Golden Wild’ is present on all five reels. Whenever these golden discs land on the playfield, they trigger a free re-spin mode where the golden wilds remain on the screen and nudge down by one position with each re-spin. Each time this occurs, the multiplier value of the golden wild will increase by 1x.
The re-spins end when the final golden wild moves off the bottom of the reels – luckily, it’s possible to extend the feature indefinitely if new gold discs continue to appear whilst it is active.
Hellvis Slot Bonus Features
You’ll need to hit at least three scatter symbols to trigger the free spins feature. A three-scatter trigger will award seven free spins, whilst four or five scatters will grant you 11 or 15 free spins, respectively.
Free Spins
During the bonus round, the golden wild symbols take on a new multiplier value assigned to each of the game’s five reels. Every time a golden wild symbol has its multiplier boosted via a nudge, the multiplier of future golden wilds on that reel will also increase by 1x for the remainder of the free spins round.
The free spins can also be re-triggered – three, four, or five scatters grant you the same 7, 11, or 15 free spins as they do during the base game.
Bonus Buy
Don’t want to wait for the bonus buy feature to occur naturally? Provided that you don’t live in a prohibited jurisdiction, a bonus buy facility is available for 100x the normal price per spin.
Pros
- Excellent presentation – the graphics are attractive, the animation is smooth, and the sound is pretty decent as well, provided you are actually playing the game.
- Ante bet and the bonus bet are welcome additions – for players that can take advantage of them, at least!
- Golden Wilds do a good job of spicing up the base game and are even better during the bonus round.
Cons
- The regular payouts listed on the paytable aren’t fantastic – you’ll need a lot of winning payways to reach anything exciting.
- The bonus round could be a little more interesting – it doesn’t offer a great deal over what you get in the base game.
Hellvis Wild Slot Review Final Thoughts
Pragmatic Play can usually be relied on to come up with the goods, but Hellvis Wild is something of a mixed bag. It looks great, for sure, but it doesn’t pay as well as it probably should. The maximum jackpot cap of just 5,000x doesn’t help matters, but it’s the low payouts for the regular symbols which are the real killer.
