Game Overview
Today, we’re looking at another game in Avatar UX’s popular Popwins series. Titled “HipHopPop”, this game shares many similarities with the recent Kokeshi Pop Popwins game. Still, after I began to dig under the surface a little, I soon noticed more than a few subtle differences between the two games. Both games have a high maximum win; 20,000x is mentioned on the paytable of HipHopPop, which I am assuming to be the correct figure despite a higher number being mentioned elsewhere. The RTP is bang-on average at 96%, and a maximum of 118,098 payways are available to unlock.
Each round starts with just 486 pay ways; however – that is 243 in each direction, as this is a pays-both-ways online slot. The “PopWins” mechanic refers to how the grid will expand to create all those additional pay ways – winning combinations will explode immediately after landing in view before the positions they occupy are divided into two new positions for the next set of tumbling symbols. There is also a free spin feature with two options – guaranteed wilds or synced reels – and a bonus buy facility with five options to choose from.
How does a blend of high variance slots and hip-hop sound to you? If you’re curious to see the results of this unusual pairing, we have a free demo slot of HipHopPop available to play below:
Hiphop Pop Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I wondered if many other online slots shared this rare theme, and I was surprised that it isn’t quite as unusual a pairing as I had first imagined. I had forgotten all about the excellent East Coast vs West Coast machine from Nolimit City, for starters, and that’s not to mention other games with a much less full-on hip-hop influence, such as the recent Dice Dice Baby. It’s certainly not a common theme by any means, but there are obviously a handful of other games out there if you want to look for them. I’m surprised we haven’t seen an official license or two by now if I’m honest – I’d definitely give an Eminem online slot a few spins, wouldn’t you?
The real question, as always, is, of course – how does it pay? There’s a single “Super-High” pay symbol listed on the paytable, but it turns out that the diamond encrusted dollar sign only shows up during the free spin modes. There are four regular “high-paying” symbols, each represented by a hip-hop artist on a different coloured background. The red symbol will pay you 8x your bet for every complete pay way of five of a kind, followed by the orange at 6x, the yellow at 5x, and finally, the purple symbol, which will pay you 4x your stake for all five symbols. There are three further symbols before we reach the low-paying part of the paytable; a stereo on a green background will pay you 4x your bet for all five, followed by a training shoe and some spray paint cans, both of which are worth 2.5x the current stake for a complete payway.
Hip Hop Pop offers thirteen possible wagering options, beginning at a minimum of €0.20 per round before increasing to a maximum of €40.00. The small number of bets between the two extremes could be an issue for some players, but there is a decent spread overall.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game begins with a standard 5×3 playfield initially, but the size of the grid will increase with every winning combination that “pops” on the reels. Each time this occurs, all reels involved in the winning combination will split into two positions until the grid has reached a maximum size of six high on all reels.
The Popwins mechanic described above is the only real base game feature to speak of, with the rest of the game’s features reserved for the bonus round.
Hiphop Pop Slot Bonus Features
Accessing the bonus round of HipHopPop is not done using scatter symbols as with most online slots. Instead, it requires you to expand the grid to its maximum size before the free spins are automatically awarded.
Free Spins
During the free spins feature, the grid can expand past its normal maximum size of 5×6 up to a maximum size of 5×9, enabling the maximum number of payways. Note that the expansion of the grid does not reset fully between free spins during this mode as it does in the base game, making it easier to reach larger grid sizes.
There are two different bonuses available during free spins – synced reels or guaranteed wilds. It is also possible to enable both features simultaneously by unlocking the grid fully during the bonus round.
The synced reels feature is probably my least favourite of the two options, as only two adjacent reels can become locked together when this feature is active. On the other hand, the random wilds feature can add a huge number of wilds to the reels across the entire playfield.
There is also a multiplier of between 1x and 4x available in the free spins feature, depending on the number of winning combinations that are hit on each free spin. A gamble wheel allows you to risk your bonus round for the opportunity to start with more of these features enabled.
Bonus Buy
You have five options to choose from on the bonus buy screen – you can pay 75x the normal bet for up to eight free spins with one of the two features described in the previous section picked at random, or you can pay 300x the bet for up to ten spins with your choice of either guaranteed wilds or synced reels.
If you have major money to spend, you can also opt to pay 1,000x the regular stake for up to 12 free spins with both synced reels and guaranteed wilds enabled. My results from this latter option weren’t enough to tempt me into ever trying it for real, but it’s worth having a blast on our demo slot above if you are curious to try it for yourself.
Hiphop Pop Slot Review Final Thoughts
Summing up, HipHopPop isn’t one of my favourite games out of the Popwins series. But luckily, with so many other titles to try that feature the fun mechanic, you’re still left with plenty of options if this particular outing isn’t to your taste either.
