Hugo Legacy (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

Hello, again friends! We’re back with another Hugo-inspired online slot review, and this time it’s to celebrate the character’s 30th Birthday! Wow, doesn’t time fly when you are playing 15 seconds per frame telephone-activated video game? Why are you laughing? I’ll have you know that this was the absolute pinnacle of remote entertainment back in my day, and it was awesome! Nonetheless, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the core gameplay of Hugo Legacy has very little to do with the phone-in games of old. Ah, what would an online slot be without some vital statistics? This time around, Play’N’Go has treated us to a 96.20% RTP, a 3,000x bet multiplier, and a cluster-pays payout mechanic, which needs at least seven matching symbols anywhere on the playfield to score yourself a win.

In terms of presentation, many of the features which were present in earlier Hugo slots are back – I’m not sure If PnG has an exclusive license to this product, as I could have sworn that I have the other Hugo games on the market from other software houses in the past. This one is a 7×7 grid slot featuring telephone symbols that charge a meter, eventually activating the free spins mode with extra features. The telephone can even be overcharged! When the telephone has enough charges, it can add win-boosting modifiers to your reel set, so keep your eyes peeled for them! Of course, you’ll really be aiming for the 35-charge telephone, which will take you to the free spin mode where the true jackpot prizes await!

So, do you remember the good old days of hitting your touchtone telephone for all it was worth in the hope of moving Hugo to another track and avoiding death? If so, don’t worry! There’s none of that here my friends! Get going and try our free Hugo Legacy demo – available to play below:

I’m a little confused as to why I can’t find any other Hugo games in our review library here at DemoSlot – I know I’ve reviewed at least one over the last year or two. Perhaps it was a female Hugo slot? That certainly rings a bell, but I wasn’t able to nail it down for the want of trying. Here’s what I can promise you – this game looks better than all of those previous efforts, so that has to be a good start, doesn’t it?

So, how much can you win by playing Hugo? The top symbol is Hugo, of course. He’s the boss! You’ll need 20 or more of his symbols in an adjacent cluster to collect 1,000x bet, however, don’t get your hopes up, as he doesn’t show all that often! Ursula is a little less generous – 20 or more of her symbols will bag you 800x your bet, whilst the Croc is going to need you to find 20 symbols if you want to collect his 600x bounty. The monkey and pelican make up the remainder of the high-paying symbols, both of which share equal returns of 400x the total bet for a 20 or more symbol combination. As for the low pays, those are represented by a variety of mining equipment – hats, gold bars, transportation trucks, dynamite, and a key. I wonder if that will prove to be useful later!

Play’n Go has become a little less predictable at late concerning their betting ranges, but you can choose from minimum/maximum wagers of €0.10 and €100.00 per spin, respectively, and this developer trademark quick selection bar makes it a breeze to switch between different bets from one spin to the next.

Base Game & Modifiers

Hugo Legacy Base Game
Hugo Legacy base game

As far as the basic gameplay is concerned, Play’n Go has stuck to the traditional in many ways, for a grid slot, that is! That means you get a 7×7 playfield with 49 unique symbol positions. All symbols can land as either solos or stacks and with 49 positions and only 5 required to score a win, I frequently found myself winning several times from a single spin. That’s important, too, as getting that telephone to ring is all-important in this game!

Telephone Modifier

Each winning symbol that forms part of a winning combination will charge the telephone by one notch. After 15 charges, you will activate a random character feature which will help you to win even more! If you manage to make it all the way to 35 telephone activations, the free spins round is awarded.

The telephone can even be overcharged up to 40, 45, or even 50 hits, resulting in an even better round of free spins – but more on that later!

Hugo Legacy Slot Bonus Features

Hugo Legacy Free Spins Feature
Hugo Legacy free spins feature

As I’m sure that you have gathered, this machine does not rely on scatter symbols to award its special feature! Instead, you need to charge up the telephone.

Characters (15 Charges)

  • Hugo: Adds 5-8 Wilds to the grid.
  • Scylla: Protects wilds and 1-2 other symbol types destroying the remain
  • Don Croco: upgrades 2-5 symbol types intoi differne symbol types
  • Fernando: Turns a single symbol type into a wild
  • Jean Paul: Turns a single symbol and builds a winning cluster around it.

Free Spins

This mode is activated when the telephone has been charged with 35 symbols. 35 Charges activate the default free spins, whilst 40 charges will award 3 character features, 45 charges award 4 character features and 5 wilds collected, and all 50 possible charges will see 5 character features make themselves known alongside 30 wilds collected.

Pros

  • Oh my, I’m confused – it’s a hugely fun game based around Hugo! All the best-loved characters are included.

Cons

  • That jackpot is way too small – Play’n Go know how to do better than this
  • You’ll need to make it to the highest possible free spin mode to stand a chance of hitting the jackpot.

Final Thoughts

Well, this one was certainly a surprise! I was expecting trash, and it didn’t disappoint entirely – mute buttons at the ready folks – on the other hand, the gameplay and presentation are top-notch, and it’s really only the small jackpot that lets this one down.
