Game Overview
Halloween is still weeks away, yet we have already witnessed at least a dozen new Halloween-themed slot releases during the past few weeks. It seems as if this trend will continue right up until the day – and perhaps for a while afterwards, if any projects currently being worked on happen to miss their deadline. Blueprint’s 2022 contribution to the Halloween slot genre is named Jack o’Lantern’s Mystery Mirror, a 40 fixed payline game with a 94.95% RTP. The paytable mentions a maximum win of 50,000x your bet, although I’ve come to realise that Blueprint often gives this same figure, even if it may not be possible in every one of their games – therefore, take the maximum win figure with a pinch of salt!
The feature set looks to be fairly limited. However, many recent Blueprint slots have appeared to be deceptively simple, so perhaps there are a few surprises to discover along the way. The paytable only mentions the free spins bonus round, triggered by hitting the scatter symbols on reels two, three, and four, and says that it includes a “mystery mirror” symbol which sounds very similar to the mystery symbols we’ve already seen in many other games. I checked the rules page but couldn’t find anything else, so I decided to get spinning and see what I could find.

Jack O’ Lantern’s Mystery Mirror Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The title of this game – “Jack o’Lantern” – refers to the carved turnips, or more commonly pumpkins, which are widely associated with the Halloween Holiday. In other parts of the world, the term can also have other meanings, such as in the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a drunk that makes a poor bargain with the devil and ends up roaming the earth with only a hollowed-out turnip to guide him. There are many such stories and legends associated with Halloween which have helped to increase the popularity of the holiday in Europe and the United States. Every year sees dozens of new Halloween-themed slots; this year, we’ve had “Book of Halloween” and “Tricks and Treats”, amongst many more, and there are dozens if not over a hundred Halloween games in the libraries of modern online casinos.
The highest-paying symbol on the paytable is the wild pumpkin, but the return of 12.5x your bet for each full pay line of five-of-a-kind doesn’t feel particularly impressive. A witches’ hat is the highest-paying regular symbol, with a return of 10x for all five symbols. Two spooky looking sacks are next, paying 7.5x for a complete pay line, whilst a spell book and a candlestick are worth 5x each for all five symbols. The scatters have no return at all other than awarding the bonus round, and the rest of the paytable is made up of low-paying royal symbols. The only reason I can see for the low payouts is the large number of paylines – there are 40 in this game – but the larger than average playfield should have offset this slightly. Overall, I couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed at this stage.
The wagering options are a little crazy, even for a game from a top-tier developer; the minimum bet of €0.40 represents a penny per line, which is fair enough, although this may be a little high for those with very small bankrolls.; At the other end of the scale, the maximum bet of €400.00 per round is surely way too much for any player.
Base Game & Modifiers
Let’s talk about the base game next; Jack o’Lantern’s Mystery Mirror utilises a large, 5×4 playfield, and dead spins are kept to a minimum thanks to the inclusion of 40 fixed paylines. I would have expected the symbols to appear in stacks in a game like this, but that is not the case. Winnings are awarded in the usual manner – three or more matching symbols on a pay line starting from the left will award a win, with the biggest prizes reserved for combinations of five-of-a-kind.
Sadly, there isn’t much more to report about the base game, no modifiers or base game features are included, and it can feel quite monotonous, especially if it takes a long time to hit a bonus round. Whilst I was testing the game, it seemed to take forever to hit my first feature, although they seemed to come in fairly regularly after this, so perhaps I was just unlucky in the beginning.
Jack O’ Lantern’s Mystery Mirror Slot Bonus Features
There is just one bonus round in Jack o’Lantern’s Mystery Mirror, which is triggered by hitting three scatter symbols on reels two, three, and four. I expected this feature to be very common as it only awards five free spins, but it didn’t feel as if it was any more regular than the features in other online slots.
Free Spins
When you finally hit the three scatter symbols and win yourself a bonus round, you’ll notice that a new symbol has been added to the reels – the mystery mirror. This symbol seems to appear on every spin during the bonus round and works like a typical mystery symbol. Once the reels have stopped spinning, a random symbol will be chosen from the paytable, and all mystery mirrors will change into that symbol.
The mystery mirror feature does help you to win on large numbers of paylines simultaneously, and it’s a good job, too – if it weren’t for this feature, this game would feel very tight indeed. The free spins can also be re-triggered by hitting three further scatter symbols on reels two, three, and four for another five free spins, with no upper limit.
Jack O’ Lantern’s Mystery Mirror Slot Review Final Thoughts
The bonus round was a lot of fun and felt extremely profitable, but I could not shake the feeling of monotony whilst I was spinning the base game. I think this will be a slot that people will play a few times during Halloween before forgetting about it altogether.
