Game Overview
There were several Montezuma’s in the ancient Aztec civilisation, starting with Emperor Montezuma, the first who ruled between 1440 and 1469. I don’t know a great deal about any of them, but I’m sure that they were good blokes who didn’t have any cursed artefacts lying around their chambers… ah. Scrap that, then, as Jane Hunter & The Mask of Montezuma from Pragmatic Play is obviously going to contradict me immediately, isn’t it? This ten-line game offers a decidedly average jackpot of 5,000x the total bet, but the 96.02% RTP is at least a touch above the industry standard of 96%.
A Bonus symbol is only present on reel five, but you’ll need to be lucky to win yourself some free spins through this as, most of the time, it will just pay a multiple of the current bet instead. Landing three or more of the traditional scatters in view is the easiest way to access the main feature. If you have the ability to use the bonus buy facility in your country, then I’d definitely recommend taking advantage of that option here.
You’re not scared to go on an adventure inside a dark cave, searching for a haunted mask that was said to be cursed in the days of the Aztecs, are you? Great stuff! Our free demo slot of Jane Hunter & The Mask of Montezuma is available to play below.
Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Pragmatic Play was on a great run earlier this year – the developer released half a dozen brand-new online slots in a very short period of time, most of which received great reviews here at Demoslot. Unfortunately, things haven’t been quite so rosy just recently – games such as Sword of Ares and Muertos Multiplier Megaways are starting to become distant memories at this point. That’s not to say that Jane Hunter is a terrible game or anything, but it always gets me down when I see a ten-line game with a below-average jackpot, such as what is on offer here. Funnily enough, Pragmatic Play seems to have taken a little inspiration from the WMS game Montezuma for this one – who would have thought?
The eponymous Jane Hunter makes an appearance at the top of the paytable, which seems only fitting to me! A full payline of our heroine’s symbols will get you 200x your bet – double the value of the next highest-placed satchel symbol. The Shovel and Pickaxe will get you 50x your total bet for a full payline of five of a kind, matching the value of the Binoculars. That’s all we get as far as the high pays, as the rest of the paytable comprises Five Royals sharing equal payouts of 10x the bet for all five symbols. There is one more treat to mention, though – should you be lucky enough to hit a complete line of Wild symbols, those have a premium payout of 500x the total bet. Nice!
The minimum/maximum betting limits offered by this game have been set at €0.10 and €100.00, respectively, and you are even free to bet any multiple of the minimum bet as you desire – why is that such a hard thing for developers to offer these days?
Base Game & Modifiers
Jane Hunter and the Mask of Montezuma is a fairly standard video slot as far as the base game is concerned. The machine utilises a standard 5×3 playfield with ten fixed paylines, which is a setup that has been employed in many of my personal favourite online slots. As is often the case for ten-line games, most symbols require at least three matches starting from the left to award a win, but the highest-paying symbol also pays a small prize for just two matches.
Pick Feature
A single bonus symbol is present on the fifth reel only. When this lands, you’ll be offered five chests to pick from, with prizes ranging between 2x and 40x the total bet. The chests can also award some free spins – see below for details.
Jane Hunter And The Mask Of Montezuma Slot Bonus Features
Whilst you can sometimes get lucky and win some free spins by hitting the pick feature on reel five, the chances are that you’ll probably end up winning them using the traditional scatter symbols most of the time. These appear on all five reels, and hitting three, four, or five will award 10, 15 or 20 free spins, respectively.
Free Spins
In this mode, all four high-paying symbols are transformed into money symbols with values of 10x, 5x, 3x, and 2x the total bet. The first time one or more of these symbols lands at the same time as one or more wilds, the specified amount will be added to your total win.
The four money symbols can become extremely valuable over the course of a free spins session if you collect enough of them – this is made much easier if you can hit a re-trigger or two, which requires at least three scatter symbols whilst the free spins are in play.
Bonus Buy
The free spins are much more exciting than the base game, so why not go straight there? The bonus buy facility costs just 60x the normal price per spin, which seems like a real bargain to me!
Pros
- Two ways to trigger the bonus round.
- Free spins can be extremely generous if you can collect enough money symbols.
- Paytable has some decent prizes, even during the base game.
Cons
- A relatively low jackpot of just 5,000x the total bet.
- Ten pay lines make it somewhat difficult to hit anything at times!
Jane Hunter & The Mask of Montezuma Slot Review Final Thought
Many of Pragmatic Play’s games include a jackpot cap of 5,000x the bet, and every time I come across this; I can’t help but sigh. This game has a lot going for it, but ten-line games aren’t supposed to have 5,000x jackpots! In my opinion, even 10,000x would be a vast improvement, and this really does hold back what could otherwise be an excellent release.
