John Hunter Nell’antica Roma (Pragmatic Play) Slot Demo & Review

The ancient Colosseum may have once been a place of some of the fiercest hand-to-hand combat on the planet, but in the modern day, you’ll find it filled with tourists rather than gladiators. Whilst it has also been the subject of many movies and TV programmes, online slot developers have utilised it as a theme for their casino games, too. One such title is Pragmatic Play’s John Hunter Nell’Antica Roma slot, a 7-reel game with the cluster pays engine, a high RTP of 96.50%, and a maximum win of 5,000x bet.

There’s a very familiar feel to this video slot when we look at the feature set. We have cascading reels, activating when a winning combo of symbols is formed on the reels. Not only will the symbols from the win be removed and replaced with new ones, but they also leave a multiplier spot behind. The second time a win occurs on the same spot, a multiplier of x2 will appear, with these having the potential to reach up to 128x in value. Players can trigger a free spins bonus by hitting at least three scatters in view, and whilst this feature is active, the multiplier spots will not reset between losing spins.

The gladiator theme may be a path well trodden in the online slots niche, but they make for some pretty exciting games. If you’re interested in taking a look at this one, then we have a John Hunter Nell’Antica slot demo that’s free to play below.

John Hunter Nell'antica Roma Paytable
John Hunter Nell’Antica Roma paytable

Once you’ve tried a few spins on the John Hunter Nell’Antica Roma slot, you’ll soon realise it’s a clone of Pragmatic’s hugely successful Sugar Rush slot, so I have a feeling this release is solely aimed at the Italian market, to at least to begin with, and perhaps it will be available globally at a later date. It’s quite a coincidence this slot game came across my desk today, as it was only earlier in the week I reviewed Sugar Rush Xmas, which is another clone of the original, just with a Christmas theme. Let’s move on anyway and see what rewards this version has to offer over at the pays section.

Taking the top spot on the paytable is the Gladiator, who will pay 150x bet for winning clusters of 15 or more symbols. He’s followed by two more warriors awarding 100x and 60x, respectively, with the last of the premium symbols being the Shield and awarding 40x the bet for combos of 15+. The low pays are represented by three coins, where we have the Gold Coin paying 30x bet, the Silver Coin at 25x, and finally, the Bronze Coin rewarding 20x bet for wins of 15+ symbols.

We have the usual large selection of bets available from Pragmatic, with the minimum stake to play being €0.20, whilst the maximum limit to spin the reels reaches a huge €100. You’ll find lots of options within this range, so regardless of your bankroll size, you’ll easily find a bet that’s comparable to it.

John Hunter Nell’antica Roma Slot Base Game

The gameplay on Pragmatic’s John Hunter Nell’Antica Roma slot is set across a 7×7 reel set where 49 symbols fill the grid on each spin. Wins are credited when at least five matching symbols appear adjacent to each other anywhere within the playfield. All winning combos initiate the cascading reels engine, which removes the symbols in the win before dropping new symbols from above to fill the spaces left behind.

Multiplier Spots

When a winning symbol explodes, it leaves a mark on the game grid. After a symbol explodes in the same location for the second time, a multiplier is introduced to that specific spot. This multiplier starts at x2 and progressively doubles each time one or more symbols explode on that spot, with the maximum cap being 128x. This multiplier applies to all winning combinations that land on top of it. If multiple multipliers are part of the same winning combination, their values are combined. In the base game, these marked spots with multipliers persist until the end of the tumbling sequence, and they are cleared when no more tumbles occur.

Free Spins Feature

When the free spins are active, all marked spots and multipliers will remain in play for the duration of the feature and not reset between losing spins. Additional spins can be won via a re-trigger with 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 scatter symbols landing in the bonus, awarding an extra 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30 free spins, respectively.

Pros

  • High standard of graphics.
  • Tried and tested in-game mechanics that are popular with players.

Cons

  • It would be better if the maximum win was at least 10,000x.

John Hunter Nell'antica Roma Slot Review Final Thoughts

Whether this turns out to be a release purely for the Italian market or not, John Hunter Nell'Antica Roma is another well-designed slot game from Pragmatic Play featuring mechanics that players approve of and love. Yes, it's a shame it's just a clone, but it's worth a few spins nonetheless.
