Kingmaker Megaways (Big Time Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

For whatever reason, Big Time Gaming has fallen away in recent years, in my opinion, at least, as I cannot remember the last slot release I enjoyed playing. However, you cannot take away what the developer has done previously, and not just giving the slot world the hugely popular Megaways mechanic, but also some fantastic slots that used it. One such title is Kingmaker Megaways, a title I still play sparingly today. It is a 5-reel slot with up to 16,807 ways to win, a 96.65% RTP, and a 24,250x the stake maximum win.

The reason I still play it? It’s quite simple: the free spins bonus, or at least the free spins bonus once I’ve ground away for many spins trying to build up its win multiplier. You see, during the base game, each 5-symbol combination increases that symbol’s win multiplier by 1x. The four multipliers can grow indefinitely during a session and only reset once you trigger the free spins bonus. Now, the major part about that free spins bonus is that the four multipliers you’ve built up are combined to create a total win multiplier for the free spins. So, essentially, it’s possible to create quite the multiplier to go with your free spins – once they trigger, of course.

Not so long ago, Big Time Gaming was the Nolimit City of today, constantly releasing banging slots featuring new mechanics and generally showing innovation other studios could only dream of. Perhaps they’ll get back to that level again in the future, but if you want to see what the studio was once capable of and what set them lightyears ahead of other providers in the industry, then go back to basics and check out Dragon Born, Bonanza Megaways, and the legendary Danger High Voltage.

We’re now at the part of the review where we inspect the payouts that can come via the slot’s symbol combinations. The Gems are the high-value symbols, with the Purple Gem the best with a 10x the stake return for a 5-symbol combination. The Red Gem is next and worth up to 0.7x, the Blue rewards up to 0.6x, and the Green maxes out at 0.5x. As for the low-value rewards, these come from the playing card symbols. The Ace and King both return up to 0.4x, the Queen and Jack are worth up to 0.35x, and the Ten and Nine reward a maximum of 0.3x. Whether it’s due to the nature of Kingmaker Megaways and the fact you can build up a substantial multiplier in the base game, the staking options are somewhat limited. Yes, low-rollers will be fine with the minimum entry point of €0.20, but those with more money to spend will likely be disappointed at the max limit of just €4.

Base Game & Modifiers

As the title tells us, Big Time Gaming’s Megaways reel modifier mechanic is utilised across the 5 reels of this slot. Each reel will spin in a random number of symbols between 2 and 7. Due to that mechanic, each spin reveals a different number of ways to win, with the maximum being 16,807, should all reels contain 7 symbols. For the most part, winning combinations require three or more matching symbols on consecutive reels starting from the left. The exception is the Purple top-paying symbol that requires two or more.

Gem Multipliers

To the left of the reels, you’ll find flags representing the four clans battling it out as per the slot’s theme. They also represent the win multiplier for their respective coloured Gem symbol. Each time a five-of-a-kind symbol combination is completed on the reels, the corresponding multiplier will increase by 1x.

No limits exist on how high these multiplier values can climb during your gaming session, but they will reset once you’ve triggered and played the free spins bonus game. The multiplier values of each symbol will apply to future payouts involving the respective coloured symbols.

The size of the multipliers collected also has an impact on the free spins bonus on Kingmaker Megaways, which is triggered when three or more scatter symbols land anywhere in view in the base game.

Free Spins Feature

You receive 7, 12, or 20 free spins in return for landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols, respectively. Before the bonus game starts, the four multipliers to the side of the reels are added together, becoming the win multiplier for the bonus. So, every win you land is multiplied by that value. That progressive multiplier will also increase by 1x for every 5-symbol combination created.

Your winning potential is boosted even further, as each spin of the bonus game is guaranteed to reveal 16,807 ways to win, meaning 7 symbols on every reel. Finally, it’s possible to re-trigger the free spins bonus by landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols on a spin.

Pros

  • Interesting combo of game mechanics mixed in with Megaways.
  • Great slot for those who like grinding games.

Cons

  • The bonus triggers sparingly, and building up the win multipliers takes time.
  • Is the max win really achievable? I don't think so.

Kingmaker Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts

Kingmaker Megaways has been one of my go-to Megaways slots for many years, but only if I plan to play a long session. Why? Because while this slot looks impressive on paper with its free spins win multiplier building aspect, in practice, you usually have to spend a lot of time (and spins) to have a chance to reap the benefits. The free spins bonus frequency is low, and landing 5-symbol combinations to increase the symbol multipliers is not something that happens frequently. Unless you have deep pockets, there's a good chance you’ll lose your bankroll before triggering the bonus with your long-grinded win multiplier. Kingmaker Megaways can be an ok slot, but only play it in the right circumstances.
