Legacy Of Dynasties (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

Unless you happen to have a time machine handy, it’s tough to prove how far back in time Chinese culture stretches. Experts believe it to be one of the oldest that continues to have a presence in the modern era, dating back to as far as 2100 BC. The ruling families of the empire during each time period are known as dynasties, and if you were lucky enough to be the emperor or a relation, you could consider yourself somewhat of a big cheese. I wonder what they would make of the Legacy of Dynasties slot release from provider Play’n Go? Is it good enough to warrant a place in the royal court, or would the designers be off to the nearest torture chamber? Some quick-fire stats then, and Legacy of Dynasties is a five reel, three row slot with ten fixed paylines. It has RTP options ranging from 84.28%-96.28% and a maximum win of 2,300x.

The base game action is fairly old school; wins are achieved by matching corresponding symbols along a payline starting from the leftmost reel. In standard play, the expanding reels feature can be activated at random, and the chosen symbols will expand, paying a win, the size of which will depend on how many reels it covers. The free spins round is activated by landing three scatter symbols, and this bonus then plays out in a variation of the well-known ‘book’ style game mechanic.

The game concept used in Legacy of Dynasties is certainly not original. It utilises the expanding symbol, one of the most popular mechanics in the modern slot era. The first online game of this type that I remember enjoying is the classic Book of Dead, also by Play’n Go. If you want to talk about legacy, this slot is up there. A fantastic slot in its own right, its success has spawned a succession of similar titles from many game providers. As time marches on, so does the modernisation of slot games. As such, more recent variations of this game type have introduced more complex features and enhancements. If you fancy something more volatile, how about Book of Shadows from Nolimit City? This beast offers a potential maximum win of 30,338x your bet. Next up, we’ll take a more thorough look into the features of Legacy of Dynasties, starting with the pay table.

The top symbol featured on Legacy of Dynasties is the Wild, which pays a juicy 200x your stake for a five of a kind win, followed by the Emperor, who will return 100x. There’s a bit of a drop-off in values after this, with the Purple Lady and Tiger symbols next, which are both worth 15x for a line of five. Then we have the Panda at 12x and the Peacock and Frog, which both pay 10x. The A, K, Q, and J are the non-premium symbols, and they will all return 5x for each line of five.

There are 17 different stake size options available on Legacy of Dynasties, starting as low as €0.10 and increasing up to €100 per spin. This ensures plenty of choices for players to find a suitable bet size comparable to their budget.

Legacy Of Dynasties Slot Base Game

Game mechanics wise, it’s a simple affair. Wins are paid one way, from left to right and must start from the leftmost reel first. There are 10 fixed paylines along a reel matrix of 5×3, in which a minimum of three matching symbols must appear for a win to be created.

Expanding Symbols

In the base game, keep an eye on the bar above the main reels, which displays all of the symbols used in the game. On random spins, up to 10 of these can be lit up and landing matching symbols on a minimum of three reels to those highlighted above will result in them expanding to cover all row positions. Expanded symbols do not need to be adjacent.

Legacy Of Dynasties Slot Bonus Features

Legacy Of Dynasties Free Spins Feature
Legacy of Dynasties free spins feature

To trigger the free spins feature, you will need to land a scatter symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5 during any one spin. Once activated, you will be taken to a screen displaying a wheel upon which various amounts of possible starting free spins are displayed. Spin the wheel to see how many you have been awarded, which can range between 3-20 spins.

Free Spins Feature

On every spin during the bonus, up to 10 random expanding symbols are highlighted, and again, you will need to match them up on the screen to get them to expand. During free spins, landing two scatter symbols will trigger between 3-8 Dynasty Spins. This is essentially a bonus within a bonus, in which the highlighted symbols present during the trigger remain active for the duration of the Dynasty Spins. Once complete, the player is returned to the main feature, and the remaining spins left from that are played out as normal.

Pros

  • Top Symbol is valuable at 100x, especially if expanded.
  • RTP is slightly above average at its top end.

Cons

  • Low max win.
  • Boring base game.
  • Yet another clone, and a poor one at that.

Legacy Of Dynasties Slot Review Final Thoughts

I’m going to be brutally honest here, I expected better from Play n Go, especially as ‘book’ style games are somewhat of a speciality for them. The max win is low compared to similar titles, the base game is monotonous, sometimes feeling like you have gone hundreds of spins without an in-play feature or a decent line win, and it teases for the bonus so often without landing that you become numb to it. When you do trigger the free spins, in my experience, it more often than not awards you the lowest number of starting spins on the wheel. If you can get a full screen of the expanding Emperor, that would undoubtedly cheer you up, but this game is definitely not going to leave a lasting legacy in my view.
