A Nian is a beast that lives under the sea or in the mountains, apparently – two very different environments there – and features prominently in Chinese mythology. Yup, you heard that right – this one is coming to you from the same people that brought the world Lianhua Qingwen capsules. Dear oh dear. As for the vital statistics, this is a 243-way machine that offers a 96.26% RTP and a top win of 5,000x the total bet.
This is yet another cascading symbols game, meaning that whenever there is a win, the included symbols will be immediately removed from the reel set. New symbols will then drop down to fill the gaps left by the prior winning combinations, allowing new wins to form on the playfield. Each round will continue in this manner until there are no more winning combinations visible on the playfield. According to Blue Guru’s own description of this game, the Nian is an ancient creature of terror and destruction deeply ingrained in Chinese folklore. It is said to have had a dragon-like head with fierce claws and long teeth that glinted menacingly in the moonlight. The beast would come down from the shadows during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year)… which is right about now! Admittedly, it’s nice to have a game based around the New Year that isn’t White Rabbits, but at the same time, that story could only be more ridiculous if it went on to mention that the Nian later crash-landed in New Mexico! But wait; today, the Nian has become a symbol of good luck and fortune in Chinese culture rather than a creature associated with fear and terror as it once was in ancient times. This at least provides some clarity as to why Blue Guru chose to use this crazy story as the basis for their latest online slot!
The top symbol on the paytable is a Chinese lantern, but this will only award you 6.66x your total bet for a full payway of five of a kind. Next, we have the second-placed symbol, a traditional Chinese drum, that pays 1.66x your bet for all five symbols. Finally, the bell and the gong share a payout of 1.33x for a complete payway, and that’s your lot as far as the high-paying symbols are concerned. There are five low pays, too, of course, but these only offer between 0.33x and 0.5x the total stake for a full payway of five of a kind.

The base game of Legendary Battle of Nian consists of five reels of three rows each. Every possible path from left to right is active for payouts, resulting in a total of 243 payways. The last few releases by Blue Guru Games have all been extremely impressive, especially Napoleon vs Rabbit’s, so I was really looking forward to seeing what Legendary Battle of the Nian had to offer. The slot, I have to say, looks great, but the base game could have perhaps benefited from a modifier or two to break things up a little. However, I did enjoy the free spins feature, and if you’ve tried Blueprint Gaming’s Ted Cash Lock slot, you’ll likely want to take this game for a few spins too.
