Legion Gold & The Sphinx of the Dead (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

Excuse the pun, but Play’n Go has certainly made a killing out of using the word ‘dead’ in the title of many of its slots. Of course, the Book of Dead is probably the most successful online slot of all time, and since its release, Play’n Go has brought us titles such as Legacy of Dead, Secret of Dead, Amulet of Dead, and Doom of Dead. As you’ve probably assumed by now, it is another that I’m reviewing today, and this time it is Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead, a 5×3 slot with 25-fixed paylines, a 96.25% RTP, and a 3,000x the stake maximum win.

This slot has the same look and feel as many of those titles above but has a few more features than most. There is a Money Collect feature in the base game that can land instant coin prizes of up to 200x the stake, and there are also two bonus features to aim for. The first is a Re-Spins bonus once again featuring those Cash Prize coin symbols. Each time a new one lands, your three initial re-spins are reset back to three. If you fill all positions, that bonus awards 1,000x the stake. The other bonus game is a free spins round that features a Mega 3×3 symbol on every spin.

If you’re a fan of Book of Dead and the other ‘dead’ slots from Play’n Go, you’ll probably enjoy what Play’n Go has thrown together here. Check it out for free on the Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead slot demo below.

Legion Gold Sphinx of the Dead Slot
Legion Gold Sphinx of the Dead Slot paytable

Play’n Go has mixed up a couple of themes here for their release of Legion Gold and the Sphinx of the Dead, and this is obviously another follow-up to Legion Gold, a slot themed on the Roman Empire. However, in this title, somehow, the Roman Empire found its way to the pyramid-laded Egypt. The backstory is not made clear at this early stage of the slot’s release,  but I would imagine it has something to do with them wanting to get their hands on an ancient Sphinx-like relic of some sort or all of the treasures of the pharaohs, which one it is, I can’t be sure?

While the theme isn’t easy to work out, the payouts are as they’re clearly visible on the slot’s paytable. The Gladiator Wild, which also substitutes for regular-paying symbols, shares the top payout with the Pharaoh, and both have 20x the stake return, which is paid when five line up across a payline. The Tiger is worth up to 16x, the Crocodile returns up to 12x, and the Dog pays up to 8x. Each of the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack have top returns of 2x the stake.

Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead is a great choice for those wanting to play for small stakes, as you can spin for as little as €0.05 per spin. On the flip side, if you have lots of cash to burn, the maximum possible stake reaches a knee-trembling €100 a press.

Base Game & Modifiers

Legion Gold Sphinx of the Dead Slot base game

Money Collection

Legion Gold & The Sphinx of the Dead slot bonus features

Legion Gold Sphinx of the Dead Slot
Legion Gold Sphinx of the Dead Slot free spins feature

There are two bonus games to aim for on Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead, one being a Hold & Win game and another a free spins bonus. Want to learn more about each of them? Then let’s check them out below.

Gold Respins Feature

This bonus triggers once six or more Coin Symbols, which can hold cash prize values of up to 200x the stake, land anywhere in view on a base game spin. You receive 3 re-spins of reels that can now reveal blanks, Gold Coins, or Chest symbols only. Each time any of the two coins or chests appear, your re-spins reset back to 3.

When Chests land, they collect all the cash values of the Coins on the reels, and you receive them as a payout. The bonus continues until you run out of re-spins, which rewards you all the cash values collected, or you fill all positions with Gold Coins, rewarding you 1,000x the stake.

Mega Free Spins Bonus

The Mega Free Spins bonus game triggers when 3 or more scatter symbols land in any position on the reels. You receive 5 free spins; on each, a Mega 3×3 symbol representing one of the regular or scatter symbols will land. The bonus also re-triggers with another 5 free spins each time 3 or more scatters appear on the same spin.

Pros

  • Affordable betting range starting from 0.05, great for low-stakes players.
  • Two bonus games and a money collect feature provide plenty to aim for.

Cons

  • 3,000x max win might feel a little low compared to other modern slots.

Legion Gold & Sphinx of the Dead Slot Review Final Thoughts

If you’re a fan of Play’n Go’s wide range of ‘Dead’ slots and those in the Rich Wilde series, you’ll feel right at home with Legion Gold and the Sphinx of Dead. Sure, the Roman-Egyptian mashup feels a little random, but the familiar gameplay and added features like the Money Collect and Gold Re-Spins bonuses keep things interesting. The potential to win up to 3,000x your stake isn’t game-changing, but it’s enough to keep the adrenaline pumping.
