Game Overview
The word ‘legion’ can mean many things, but the simplest definition is “great in number”. More specifically, a legion can also refer to a division of between 3,000 and 6,000 men, usually including a complement of Cavalry. During the time of the Roman Republic, their legion comprised between 5,200 and 5,600 soldiers and was the largest unit within their military. So does that mean that Legion Gold is Play’N’Go’s most generous online slot?! Not quite, I’m afraid! This is a 25-payline machine with a default RTP of 96.23%, but the top win is a not-so-legion 2,000x the stake. Note that as with most other Play’N’Go machines, the RTP of this game is casino-selectable, so I’d recommend checking that your chosen casino is running the game at its default setting before you begin to play.
There are two main features contained within Legion Gold. The first is a three-spin feature triggered by hitting six golden coins, which is probably the fastest and easiest way to collect the Golden Prize jackpot of 2,000x your total bet. The second big feature is the Mega Free Spins, which is so-called because of its giant ‘Mega Symbols’ that occupy 3×3 symbols and move around the playfield between rounds. These features should be instantly familiar to land-based casino players, as they are identical to the ones offered in the hugely popular Lightning Link series of slots.
This isn’t a game for ultra-high variance slot fanatics, but those who prefer machines with a slightly more sane risk-to-reward ratio will no doubt enjoy our free demo slot of Legion Gold, available to play below:
Legion Gold Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I have no idea when Roman Empire-themed slots first became a thing, but it’s somehow become one of the most popular categories at online casinos in 2023! We’ve reviewed at least half a dozen Roman Empire-themed games in recent months, including Northern Lights 4 Corners of Rome, Inspired Gamings Centurion Megaways, and Game of Gladiators Uprising, also from Play’N’Go. Legion Gold has quite a different feel to all those titles, however, and the only real clues that this is a Roman slot are the title and the Roman soldier symbols. It’s not a very coherent theme overall, but let’s be honest – it doesn’t have to be if the payouts are large enough!
The paytable comprises a rather eclectic set of symbols, headed up by the Roman soldier wild and a bear, who I assume was a final boss of sorts! Both of these symbols share identical returns of 20x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind, with the second-place spot going to a somewhat “bling” looking horse that is decked out in golden armour with a payout of 16x for a complete payline. Hitting all five bulldog symbols will top up your balance with 12x the total bet, whilst the final high-paying spot goes to a bald eagle with a return of 6x for all five symbols. The low pays are made up of just four royals, all of which have identical payouts of 2x the total bet for a five of a kind winning combination. Neither of the two sets of scatters has any cash prize associated with them, which is a little bit disappointing considering that they can often act as blockers for regular paytable wins.
The minimum/maximum betting limits available in this game are €0.05 and €100.00, respectively. I’m not sure why, but Play’N’Go has opted not to include their usual ‘quick bet’ buttons in this release, meaning that you’ll have to scroll through the available wagers when changing your current bet.
Base Game & Modifiers
The basic gameplay of Legion Gold takes place on a standard 5×3 playfield, and 25 fixed paylines are active on every spin. All wins pay from left to right on adjacent reels, and all winning combinations require at least three matching symbols and must start from the left-most reel.
Legion Gold Slot Bonus Features
There may not be any base game features or modifiers to speak of in Legion Gold, but Play’N’Go has at least included a couple of bonus rounds to spice up the action. Take a look at what these are below.
Gold Respins Feature
This is a typical three-spin feature triggered by hitting at least six golden coins on any base game spin. The triggering coins will immediately lock in place, and each has a cash value that will be awarded at the end of the re-spin feature.
In this mode, all of the regular paytable symbols are replaced by further golden coins and every symbol that lands on the playfield will lock into that position for the remainder of the feature. Every time a gold coin lands on the reels, your remaining spin counter will be reset to three.
The bonus round will end if you fail to hit any additional coins three times in a row. Alternatively, filling all 15 possible symbol positions with golden coins will instantly award the maximum jackpot of 2,000x the total bet.
Mega Free Spins
In addition to the golden coin scatter symbols, reels one, three, and five also contain golden lion scatters that will trigger a free spin bonus round. On every free spin, three adjacent reels will be selected as the Mega Reel, meaning they are joined together and include only giant 3×3 symbols. Unfortunately, this bonus round cannot be re-triggered, so I am pretty sure it wouldn’t be possible to hit the jackpot from this part of the game.
Legion Gold Slot Review Final Thoughts
This is a well presented and fun online slot, and as long as you are happy with the fact that you are unlikely to win much more than a few hundred times your bet, then you’ll probably get a lot of enjoyment out of Legion Gold. However, I can’t help but feel that the low jackpot of just 2,000x will put many players off.
