Game Overview
The “Luck of the Irish” along with the Leprechaun has become almost as synonymous with slot machines as fruit during the past two decades. Okay, I’ll admit that is probably exaggerating things somewhat, but there is no question about how massively influential the Rainbow Riches franchise has been in the gaming industry. The latest attempt to dethrone the king of leprechaun-themed games is a 30-pay line effort titled Leprechaun’s Magic Power Reels from provider Max Win. It offers a 96.05% RTP and a maximum win of 12,500x your stake – far higher than many other games you’ll come across in the Irish slot genre.
The introduction screen has several pages which explain the game’s many modifiers and features. The first of these has been given the name “Maxsymbols” by the developer and works by transforming each of the regular symbols into expanding golden versions. So-called “magic wilds” appear on reels two through seven, whilst a magic wheel and magic spins make up the primary bonus round.
I have always enjoyed playing the Rainbow Riches games but have often felt disappointed by the relatively low jackpots many of them have to offer. If you feel the same, perhaps we can all find an alternative, higher-variance game in our free demo slot of Leprechaun’s Magic Power Reels? Let’s hope so!
Leprechaun’s Magic Power Reels Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Ever wondered what a leprechaun is? I’ll be honest; I don’t think I have ever given it any genuine thought myself before now. Heading over to Wikipedia then, it turns out that the leprechauns are diminutive supernatural beings of Irish folklore and are sometimes classed as a variant of the fairy. The most common depiction of these creatures is a tiny mischievous man that sports a ginger beard alongside a green outfit and hat. The leprechauns appear to have a fascination with shoes and footwear, and they all claim to have stashed a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow on several occasions. These cheeky beings are now an inseparable part of slot machine history thanks to the massive popularity of the Rainbow Riches franchise by Barcrest.
Frustratingly, the paytable on Leprechaun’s Magic Power Reels only shows the returns as a number of coins and does not update when you change your current bet. Because of this, a little math is needed to get a handle on the size of the winnings! The leprechaun is the highest-paying symbol with a return of 12,000 coins on the paytable, but as you are betting 20 coins per spin, that translates to a win of 400x your current stake for a complete pay line of eight-of-a-kind. The horseshoe is worth 150x the bet for all eight, followed by the top hat and pipe, which both award 50x the total bet for a complete line. The bottom half of the table is filled up by five royals with returns of between 15x and 20x for eight-of-a-kind.
The demo version of this game only allows you to bet between €0.20 and €6.00 per spin, though I suspect that the real money game could permit you to wager a little more than this. If not, a handful of players could skip this machine in favour of one that allows bigger bets, but I suspect €6.00 is enough to satisfy the majority.
Base Game & Modifiers
If you were paying attention during the previous section, you might well have said “eight of a kind?!” out loud! Yes, you read correctly – this game uses a huge 8×6 playfield, one of the largest of any regularly designed online slot. This gives the developer quite a lot of scope to add big wins for the longest winning combinations, but I have to say I didn’t even hit six-of-a-kind as far as I know during the whole time that I was testing this slot. Don’t expect the eight-way hits to appear too regularly!
Max Symbols Modifier
The opening screens make a huge thing of this feature, which is probably fair – the only problem is that it seems extremely difficult to get the best out of it, and I spent a long time trying to do so!
Any time you hit a winning combination, the symbol that made up the win will appear on the gold symbol meter at the top of the reel set. On the next paid spin, that symbol becomes a special expanding variant which will pay as a scatter provided you have a minimum of three visible anywhere on the screen.
The idea is that you can keep on winning and getting more symbols converted into the gold variants, but I struggled to ever hit more than one winning spin consecutively. Most of the time, I would win nothing whilst I had a gold symbol on the meter, or if I did win, it would only be three symbols and would never pay much more than 6x the bet. This modifier has lots of potential, but don’t expect to see frequent results.
Magic Wild
The wild symbol appears on reels two through seven only but will expand into a full height stack every time it appears. I managed to hit three wilds on one occasion, whilst two appeared quite frequently. These stacks really help to boost your returns, and I had several “big wins” due to these worth between 35x and 80x my bet.
Leprechaun’s Magic Power Reels Slot Bonus Features
The base game felt a little bit disappointing so far, and I certainly had not yet seen any of the huge win potential promised on the opening screen – to remind you, the promise was that you could win up to 12,500x your bet! You’ll need four or more scatters anywhere on the reels to win a free spins bonus – but is it any good?
During this mode, the golden symbols feature does not reset in between spins, which is a welcome change – provided you hit at least three symbols lit up in gold on the meter, you will receive a win on all 30 pay lines.
Before your bonus round begins, you will be presented with the magic wheel, which will determine how many free spins you will receive – the minimum is eight, a number which I landed on very frequently, whilst the maximum is 20 – I never hit this at all, sadly!
Any magic spins symbol that land during this mode will add two free spins to your remaining counter, but again these don’t show up very often in my experience. Despite this, I had great luck from this bonus round – it’s a shame the developer hasn’t included a bonus buy feature.
Leprechaun’s Magic Power Reels Slot Review Final Thoughts
In my opinion, the base game isn’t the best, but the free spins feature saves this slot. It’s quite hard to trigger, but the bonus can be hugely profitable if you can get lucky on the wheel and win many spins.
I can’t imagine this game replacing the Rainbow Riches slots for most people – they are simply far too popular. This is quite a shame, as this machine has far more potential for big wins than any of the games in that franchise. If you are a fan of the Rainbow Riches games, I would recommend trying this one next time you play.
