Game Overview
Am I the only one who finds it hilarious when a slot or video game opens up with a dramatic announcement of its own name? It was especially amusing back in the later days of the arcades, as you could walk around the various machines and listen to them shout at each other in a never-ending cacophony. It’s such a great memory for me that, in a way, the title announcement of Merkur Gaming’s Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 online slot is pretty nostalgic! As for the vital statistics, this is a ten-line machine with a 95.63% RTP and a top line hit of 500x the current bet.
The more time I spent playing this game, the more I realised that it wasn’t just the initial announcement that had given me that nostalgic feeling – it was the presentation as a whole. This is very much an “old school” online slot – the basic ten-line payout mechanic, sound effects, and even the look and feel of the graphics all give the distinct feeling of being transported back a decade or two. Whether that is a good or bad thing is likely to depend on how long you have been playing slots. Unsurprisingly for an old-style game, the feature set is quite limited, including just a single free spin bonus round and a dual-purpose wild/scatter symbol.
Do you remember when slots were simple? Merkur Gaming remembers, and we have a free demo slot of Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 to prove it, available to play below!
Magic Mirror 2 Slot Theme, Stakes, Paylines & Symbols
You won’t need to spend much time spinning this machine to realise that it’s an obvious clone of Book of Ra – assuming you know land-based slots, that is! If you are more of an online-only player, you may be more familiar with Play’N’Go’s Book of Dead, which is itself a Book of Ra clone – albeit a much more modern one than Magic Mirror Deluxe 2. The two games might share near-identical feature sets, but they also use entirely different themes and graphical styles; whilst Book of Dead is a horror/adventure-themed game, this one has more of a fantasy/myth, and magic feel to it. It’s always nice to have choices, so there’s probably enough room in the industry for both games.
The dual-purpose scatter/wild symbol is the highest-paying item on the paytable, returning 200x your bet whenever five appear anywhere on the screen. If you are lucky enough to align the five symbols on one of the ten paylines, the payout will increase to 500x your bet, matching the return of the highest-paying character symbol. The second-place spot goes to the unicorn, paying 200x your bet for a full pay line of five of a kind, followed by a zodiac disk and a ring which share a return of 75x the bet for all five symbols. The low-paying symbols are divided into two groups: the Ace/King will pay you 15x your bet for all five, whilst the Queen/Jack/Ten are slightly less valuable at 10x each.
All bets are based on ten coins – one for each active payline – but you only need to know this to calculate winnings by looking at the numbers shown on the paytable. The minimum/maximum total bets equate to €0.10 and €100.00, respectively, so there should be something between this range to suit your style of play.
Base Game & Modifiers
The basic gameplay of Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 follows the typical video slot template to the letter. That means we get a five reel, three row playfield, along with ten fixed paylines that are laid out in the same familiar pattern used by almost every other ten-line game. Wins are awarded for hitting three or more matching symbols starting from the left, with larger payouts for combinations of four or five adjacent symbols.
Wild/scatter Symbol
The magic mirror symbol acts as the wild and scatter in this game, ensuring that scatters will never end up blocking other potentially winning paylines. This also means that the symbols have two different payouts – one for hitting five anywhere on the screen (200x bet), and another for five symbols on a pay line (500x bet)
Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 Free Spins Feature
The main bonus round is triggered by hitting three or more magic mirror symbols anywhere on the reel set. This will award ten free spins and a cash prize ranging between 2x your bet for three symbols up to 200x for the maximum of five.
Free Spins
After triggering this bonus round, the game will select a random symbol from the paytable to act as the special or expanding symbol. Every time this symbol appears on a free spin, it will expand to cover the entire reel before being paid as a scatter. This means you are guaranteed to hit a win on all ten paylines as long as three or more special symbols are visible anywhere on the reels.
Hitting three or more scatter symbols whilst the feature is in play will add ten free spins to your remaining total and pick an extra expanding symbol. This process can repeat until every symbol on the paytable becomes an expanding symbol, after which no further re-triggers can be won.
Magic Mirror Deluxe 2 Slot Review Final Thoughts
This is a high-volatility machine with a simplistic feature set, but you know what they always say – sometimes the simplest ideas are the best ones! If you haven’t already tired of Book of Dead, then it may be worth giving Magic Mirror 2 a few spins – who knows, perhaps you will prefer the theme of this game?
