Mahjong Ways 3+ Slot (Playstar) Slot Demo & Review

What is it they say, you wait ages for a bus, and then two come along at once. Perhaps the same could be said about provider Playstar, as the paint has barely dried on their Mahjong Ways 3 slot, and now we are being introduced to an upgrade titled Mahjong Ways 3+. Once again, it mirrors the layout we have seen in heaps of previous releases from PG Soft, so surely some kind of collaboration has occurred here again. What about the stats this time around? Well, we have a 6-reel slot featuring the cluster pays engine, an RTP of 96.92% and a huge maximum win of 100,000x bet.

Digging into the feature set, we find this is a cascading reels slot. So, each time a win is created, all reels that include winning symbols will explode, and new symbols will drop down to fill them. This feature works in unison with the win multiplier that begins at x1 and increases with each successive win up to a maximum of 88x. We have the addition of the Dragon Symbol too, which, when landing on reel 1, will cause all reels to respin, bringing a winning result. Finally, we have the free spins feature, triggered when four or more scatters appear in view. During this round, your win multiplier will be increased to a starting value of x3.

Mahjong Ways 3+ Slot Paytable

You’ll find a good few Mahjong-themed slots to play online if that style of game tickles your fancy. If it does, we have a few here on our site that you can try out too, with PG Soft carrying the Mahjong torch for a while with their titles Mahjong Ways and Mahjong Ways 2. Whether or not there is some kind of ownership or a deal has taken place between the two studios, I’m not sure, but it’s now Playstar who has taken up the baton by first releasing Mahjong Ways 3 and now an upgraded version called Mahjong Ways 3+. Okay, now that’s semi-clarified, let’s dip into the pays section and see how that looks.

Just like the third version of this game, the paytable and help section isn’t exactly full of information. However, the highest paying symbol in the game is the green tile valued at 1,000x. There is then a substantial drop down to the red tile that pays just 100x, and finally, the purple tile at 10x. The rest of the paytable comprises symbols from the game Mahjong, with the overall pay spread in this game ranging from 1x – 1000x. So how is it you actually win then? Simple, all you need is four different paying tiles to land on adjacent positions of the playfield starting from the leftmost reel first, with the value of those tiles being added up and paid to you as a winning cluster.

Thankfully there was less confusion when it came to sussing out the betting setup on Mahjong Ways 3+. The minimum price to play starts at €1, with the maximum stake reaching a staggering €600. I would imagine the lower entry point to play of €1 is just being used for the demo, with real money play bets surely starting much lower.

Base Game & Modifiers

The reel setup on Mahjong Ways 3+ consists of 6 reels, all 4 rows in height, giving a total of 24 positions within the playfield. As I mentioned in the previous section, you’ll need at least four paying tiles to land within the grid, starting from reel one, for a win to be created and paid.

Cascading Reels & Win Multiplier

Whenever a winning combination is formed, all symbols on a reel that include a winning symbol will explode and be replaced with new ones. Furthermore, the win multiplier along the top of the reels will advance one position, with its new value applied to any wins created on the subsequent cascade. If you can reach the end of the multiplier, all wins will be multiplied by a massive 88x. Players should note that once you fail to create a new win, the multiplier will reset to x1.

Dragon Symbol

If the special Dragon Symbol lands on reel 1, the symbols on all 6 reels will explode, and a respin will occur. Whilst the rules may not state this, from my experience, every time this modifier triggered the resulting respin always resulted in a win.

Mahjong Ways 3+ Slot Bonus Features

Mahjong Ways 3+ Slot Free Spins Feature

Bonus scatter symbols appear on all reels, and if 4, 5, or 6 land in view, you’ll be awarded 10, 12, or 15 free spins, respectively.

Free Spins

When the free spins begin, your win multiplier will boost to a starting value of x3. All wins you then achieve will move you one position along the meter. If you fail to hit a new win after a series of cascades, the meter will reset back to x3. Additional free spins can be won by again landing the scatters in view, with the maximum amount of spins being capped at 200x.

Bonus Buy

Mahjong Ways 3+ comes with the following three bonus buy options:

  • Instant access to the free spins: Cost 60x bet.
  • 80% chance of the feature landing on the next spin: 50x bet.
  • 60% chance of the feature landing on the next spin: 30x bet.

Pros

  • Based on a very popular tile game.
  • The massive win of 100,000x.
  • The addition of a free spins round that Mahjong Ways 3 didn't have.

Cons

  • It would have been better if the multiplier didn't reset in the free spins feature.
  • Some clearer rules would be helpful.

Final Thoughts

Whether or not Playstar felt that Mahjong Ways 3 wasn't quite up to scratch, I guess we will never know, but they have definitely upped their game in Mahjong Ways 3+. It is a shame the multiplier resets in the free spins feature, as I think it would have made it a far more appealing game if it didn't. Still worth a play though, for those die-hard Mahjong fans out there.
