Game Overview

For the sake of both mine and your sanity, I’m going to call this machine by Storm Gaming Technology simply ‘Megaways Mob’ from this point onwards, as I can’t help but feel that the ‘Megaways’ suffix is a little extraneous for a game that already features the name of the mechanic in its title! Whilst I’m new to the Storm brand, I think we can all Relax (get it?) about the quality of their games, seeing as they are published on the platform of another well-known developer, Relax Gaming. Like most games in this category, Megaways Mob utilises up to 117,649 pay ways, but unfortunately, the RTP is over a full point lower than the competition at 94.96%. As for the top jackpot, that’s up for debate here – the developer only states a cash amount of £250,000, which would equate to 2,500x at the max bet. There’s no mention of a bet multiple cap though, so it may be possible to hit far more than 2,500x at lower bets.

This may well be a high-quality online slot, but the problem once again appears to be the features on offer. It looks like very typical Megaways fare, to be honest – there’s a pick-me feature that can show up in the base game, which is a little different, I suppose. Besides that, it’s cascading reels, mystery symbols, ascending multiplier free spins, and a couple of “dynamite” modifiers. It appears that Storm hasn’t bothered including a bonus buy facility in this release, which is a little unusual for a Megaways slot but may just indicate that their primary markets do not allow such features.

If you’re wondering exactly what the “mob” in the title refers to, then it’s precisely what you might expect… the mob! Yup, gangsters and bags of cash are what await you in our free demo slot of Megaways Mob – it’s available to play below.

Megaways Mob Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Megaways Mob Paytable

We’ve had a full-on Soprano’s themed online slot at some point in the past, as I can distinctly remember playing it, but unfortunately, it seems to have been lost to time, perhaps due to an expired license. Until we get a full-on Goodfellas or The Godfather slot, I guess we’ll all have to make do with hits such as Banana Town! I’m being serious here folks, as much as I love the gritty gangster action of all of those franchises, the excellent cartoon-like gangster theme of the Relax Gaming classic is quite similar to this release in some ways. If you’re not convinced though, I’d also recommend checking out Nolimit City’s Whacked machine when you have some time!

Those familiar with Megaways slots know never to expect too much from the paytable included in these games, but this one is particularly harsh in that department. The game logo is the highest-paying symbol, but it’s only worth 20x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. The gangster is next, awarding 5x for all six symbols, after which we drop straight down to 2x for the Underground Roundel, 1.6x for the bag of robbery tools, and 1.2x for the newspaper featuring the robbery report. As for the low pays, none of those even returns your full stake for a six of a kind combination. We’ve got 0.8x for six Aces, 0.7x for six Kings, 0.6x for six Queens, 0.5x for six Jacks, and 0.4x for six Tens.

I had no idea what to expect from the betting range as I’d never seen a game by this developer before. As it turns out, we get minimum/maximum permitted stakes of €0.20 and €100.00 per spin respectively, with a fairly reasonable amount of intermediate bets allowed between those limits.

Base Game & Modifiers

Megaways Mob Base Game

The base game of Megaways Mob is configured in a typical manner – six columns that divide into a random number of rows during each game round. There’s also an additional horizontal reel located across the top of columns two through five – a feature that has been in every recent Megaways slot that I have tried despite having seemingly fallen out of favour for a while.

Winning combinations of three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left will trigger a cascade sequence where winning symbols explode, allowing new ones to fill the resulting gaps. This process will continue indefinitely as long as new winning combinations form on the reels with each cascade.

Pick Me Bonus

When three banks land on the screen during a single game round, you’ll be awarded a Pick Me bonus which allows you to choose one of the three to reveal a cash prize. The game doesn’t specify any limits for these prizes, but in my experience, somewhere in the region of 10-20x your bet seems to be about average. Hopefully, it can theoretically go much higher than that when you are lucky though!

Dynamite Modifiers

The paytable was a little unclear on this aspect of the game, so I had no choice but to play for as long as it took to finally catch some dynamite! From the wording used, I was expecting these mods to only show up during the bonus round, but that isn’t the case.

There are two ‘dynamite’ modifiers – the first sees one of our elderly robber heroes being chased by the police as he wields a Molotov, aiming to remove all of the low-paying symbols from the playfield. Let’s all cheer on the elderly gangster with a petrol bomb folks!

The other modifier is something else we frequently see in Megaways-based slots – the old man can go crazy at times, lobbing dynamite at the reels seemingly at random. Don’t worry though, as he’s simply adding a whole bunch of extra bonus-triggering scatter symbols to the reels! Let’s hope they are enough to get you a feature.

Megaways Mob Bonus Features

Megaways Mob Free Spins Feature

You’ll need at least four of the safe scatter symbols to trigger the 12 free spin bonus round, but unfortunately, I can’t see any mention of a benefit to hitting more than four of these scatter symbols. It could be that this isn’t possible, but if it is, then it’s certainly disappointing that the game doesn’t add any additional spins or a cash prize for a six-scatter trigger.

Free Spins

The free spins feature is one that you will no doubt have seen countless times – it begins with the global multiplier being reset to 1x, after which your 12 free spins will start with every cascade sequence increasing the multiplier by 1x. You can extend the bonus round with additional spins by hitting three or four Megaways mob scatters, but those only appear on the horizontal reel, so catching so many of them can be tricky.

Pros

  • Cartoon gangsters are great.
  • More features than the last couple of Megaways games I’ve tried – it’s a shame they are all very familiar though.

Cons

  • It’s the same old Megaways formula being repeated ad-infinitum – I know these games are hot, but the sheer number of them that are all near-clones of one another got out of hand years ago.

Final Thoughts

As I’ve said in the past, taken entirely on its own merits, games like this would be winners – there’s nothing wrong with the formula, the features are great, and the jackpot – whilst open to debate – is probably quite substantial. The problem is that we’ve all simply seen it way too many times before.
