Megaways Of Rock (Blueprint) Slot Demo & Review

Rock ‘n’ Roll might not have quite the same “cool factor” with the younger generations today as it once did, but history has shown multiple times that these things seem to happen in repeated – and predictable – cycles. Who knows, perhaps Blueprint’s Megaways of Rock is all part of the next big wave of rock music? It’s probably not, but stranger things have happened! The game has a 95.5% RTP, up to 117,649 payways, and a mammoth top prize of 50,000x the total bet. Whilst some other Blueprint games have made similar yet unsubstantiated claims concerning their jackpots, this is one machine where such a win feels realistically achievable with the features and gameplay on offer.

Many of the features included in this one are near-enough staples of the Megaways genre; the “mystery symbols” are a great example, as are the wilds, which are only present on the horizontal “tracker reel” and the ascending multiplier, which will increase by 1x every time a winning combination is achieved whilst the bonus round is in play. Thankfully, Blueprint has done a few things to differentiate its recent output from the plethora of existing slots offering every feature and mechanic I listed above. Take the bonus wheel, for example – this can appear in two different configurations, but as far as I can tell, it’s only possible to access one of them via the bonus buy menu; those who live in prohibited regions such as the United Kingdom are out of luck, I’m afraid! Thankfully, the main bonus wheel is available to everyone. It has two parts that spin independently to determine the number of spins and a multiplier that will be applied to them.

What are your thoughts on the Megaways concept? Are these still the best games in town, or would you prefer it if developers would consign them to the history books after all these years? I’d love to hear your thoughts, so check out our free demo slot Megaways of Rock, below!

Megaways Of Rock Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Megaways Of Rock Paytable
Megaways of Rock paytable

The theme of Megaways of Rock is just as you might expect – the reels are filled with huge fonts that wouldn’t look out of place on a Megadeth album (or any other heavy metal band, for that matter!) along with gold discs, stacks of booming subwoofers, and both game and band logo glyphs. This visual styling strongly reminds me of the NetEnt Rock-themed games released some time ago, but unfortunately, it seems that some of those might have been removed by now as a result of their licenses expiring. There are still plenty of such games to choose from, however – Rock’N’Lock from Red Tiger is a fairly average example, whilst Def Leppard Hysteria was a rare example of a licensed slot produced by Play’N’Go. Thankfully, the developer seemingly devoted their best resources to producing the game, and the results were amongst the best we saw from them in 2022.

The most valuable symbol on the paytable in this release is a game logo, and its maximum payout of 50x the total bet is much higher than anything else on offer. The speaker stack, for example, immediately drops to just 7.5x the current stake for a full payway of six of a kind, whilst the gold disc (ahem only returns twice the bet for all six symbols. The band logo (presumably!) is a green shield-shaped insignia which also pays 2x, after which we’re left with just the low-paying royals to discuss. The Aces/Kings share a payout of 1.75x your bet for all six, followed by 1x for the Queens/Jacks, 0.9x for the tens, and 0.8x for the nines. We also get wilds, mystery symbols, and scatters on the reels; however, none of those has any cash premiums attached to them.

The betting range starts at €0.20 and maxes out much lower than you might expect at €10.00 per spin. Nevertheless, I’m reasonably sure that the number of players betting higher than this is extremely small – perhaps in the 2% or lower range. Note: that’s just an opinion, not a researched fact!

Base Game & Modifiers

Megaways Of Rock Base Game
Megaways of Rock base game

Moving on to the base game, Megaways players will be instantly familiar with the setup on show here – Megaways of Rock has six reels, the first and last of which can divide into up to seven rows, whilst the middle four are capped at six. That final seventh row is guaranteed to appear during every round as it’s held on a horizontal ‘tracker reel’ displayed at the top of the main reel set. This creates natural limits of between 324 and 117,649 payways. Players will then be awarded a win when a minimum of three matching symbols (or two in the case of the top-paying symbol) land on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel first.

Mystery Symbols

These symbols can land anywhere on the reels. When that occurs, every visible mystery symbol will transform in sync into a matching symbol chosen from the paytable. Unfortunately, the mystery symbols cannot reveal scatters or wilds.

Bonus Bet

This feature did not seem to be available in the version of Megaways of Rock that I used for testing, despite being mentioned several times on the paytable. After some digging, I concluded that it refers to the “Megaways Wheel”, which appears on the bonus buy menu for 20x the total stake.

Megaways Of Rock Bonus Features

Megaways Of Rock Free Spins Feature
Megaways of Rock free spins feature

As for the main bonus round, you’ll need at least four scatter symbols to trigger some free spins. A bonus wheel is used to determine the exact number of spins awarded, but higher numbers of trigger symbols will make the segments of the wheel increasingly valuable.

For example, a four-scatter trigger can only give you up to ten free spins, whilst a seven-scatter trigger goes all the way up to 30! If you’re interested, five or six scatters will allow you to get up to 20 or 25 spins, respectively.

Free Spins

The bonus wheel used to determine how many free spins you will be given has a secondary component that will also grant you a starting multiplier. These multipliers are awarded independently of the number of free spins, so it’s possible to get any combination – clearly, 30 free spins with a 10x multiplier is everybody’s dream ticket!

Don’t forget the most important part here though, that multiplier is only the value used at the start of the feature! Every winning combination that forms on the playfield will cause a new symbol cascade, and every cascade will increase the multiplier by 1x. This means that you can easily add half a dozen to the counter during every bonus spin… or more!

Re-triggers can be won in this mode too, but it’s a tad more difficult than usual, as scatters only land on the tracker reel during this part of the game. Nevertheless, three scatters will get you five extra spins, whilst the maximum of four scatters boosts this up to ten additional free spins.

Bonus Buy

The bonus buy menu has two options to choose from, assuming that these features are allowed in your region:

  • Megaways Wheel: As far as I can tell, there is no other way to access this wheel other than via this menu. It costs 20x the total bet and instantly awards a bonus wheel that looks like the one used for the free spins bonus but instead offers regular spins (no multiplier) with an increased number of minimum Megaways. There’s a slight increase in RTP of roughly 0.5%
  • Buy Bonus: If you’d rather stick with the “real” feature (and I wouldn’t blame you!), you can buy that instead for 100x the total bet. The number of triggering scatter symbols is decided randomly.

Pros

  • The theme looks great to my eyes, although I guess I should say I’m too young to give a respected opinion on Rock! Ask me about 90’s Dance & Rave, and I’ll tell you anything you couldn’t care less about, no problem!
  • Some nice additions to the standard formula, such as the two bonus wheels.
  • The huge maximum jackpot of 50,000x the total bet.

Cons

  • The changes made to the game are appreciated but not significant enough to separate Megaways of Rock from the crowd.
  • Only one symbol with a truly high payout on the entire paytable.
  • The second feature is only accessible from the bonus buy menu.

Final Thoughts

This game has some attitude about it visually, but underneath its good looks hides a dark secret… this is a near-identical copy of a dozen or more previous Blueprint slot machines. If you like Megaways and the graphics appeal to you, then give this one a blast by all means, but those hoping for anything unique or special should try elsewhere.
