Game Overview
Back in the days of might and magic, an explorer – and later sorcerer – named Merlin went in search of the Dragon’s Egg – “Visions led me to this secret lair – the dragon’s egg holds mystical abilities! I will unleash its ferocious power!” said the young wizard, and with that, he headed out on what has since become known as Merlin: Journey of Flame. This slot comes courtesy of Play’N’Go and boasts an old-school ten-line design, a default RTP of 96%, and a maximum win of 7,500x the total bet.
The journey turns out to be a little thin on features, although it does come with a rather nice orchestral score that is given further atmosphere by the sounds of water dropping inside the dragon’s cave. The dragon’s egg acts as both the wild and scatter symbol in this game, and the best part of that is that you’ll only need to hit all six of them anywhere on the screen to find out just how ferocious that power can be… keep reading! The single special feature is a free spin-based bonus round that will be instantly familiar to Play’N’Go fans – it’s pretty much the same as the one from their unbelievably popular Book of Dead online slot but does boast an added twist in that the machine expands with an additional sixth reel during that part of the game.
Could you be the one to find all six of the dragon’s eggs? And do you want to be the holder of that ‘ferocious power’ of which the young warlock speaks? Why not find out and try our free demo slot of Merlin Journey of Flame below.
Merlin Journey Of Flame Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
If there’s a more popular wizard out there than Merlin, I’ve certainly never heard of him! He even has a lady friend nowadays – Lady Merlin, courtesy of Boomerang Studios, scored 7.6 in our review of the game earlier last year. Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg – games such as Power of Merlin Megaways have also proven immensely popular with slots players, and then you have games such as the Avalon series of slots by Microgaming, which also feature Merlin in some context or another. This wizard is everywhere – at least one must be an imposter! The voice actor playing the guy in this Play’N’Go slot sounds pretty convincing to me though – I mean, damn, I’m still saying ‘ferocious power’ over and over in my head even now!
I usually begin by talking about the regular-paying symbols, but in this case, I will have to defer to the scatter symbols first! The wild/scatter dragon egg can pay you up to a massive 7,500x your total bet during the free spins or a still respectable 5,000x during the base game. Not bad, eh? It feels like far too long since I’ve seen a slot released with such a tidy scatter-symbol payout. Now let’s get onto those regular symbols – we’ve got Merlin himself, who offers a 7,500 coin payout – that’s an important distinction from the 7,500x payout for the scatter symbols, but the great thing is that if Merlin happens to be your special symbol during the bonus round, a full screen of his symbol will still get you that same elusive 7,500x jackpot (750x for a single payline). The magic crystal is worth a maximum of 300x for all six symbols, whilst the magic book can get you 100x, and the green potion bottle returns the same 100x for a six of a kind combination. As for the low pays, Play’N’Go has opted to use runes to represent these – the yellow and orange colours are worth 20x for a six of a kind combination, whilst the remaining red, green, and blue varieties will fetch you 10x the bet for all six of those symbols.
I’m pleased to say that Play’N’Go’s typical high-quality bet selection setup is back once again in this release, although they haven’t bothered with their quick bet selection bar on this occasion for some reason – instead, we get three selectors for the coin value, number of coins, and number of pay lines, which gives a great deal of flexibility between the minimum/maximum wagers of €0.10 and €100.00 per spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of Merlin: Journey of Flame looks pretty standard, to begin with – it features a five-reel layout, and with just ten fixed paylines, you will see a few more dead spins when playing this machine than usual. Some players don’t like this setup very much, but for me, winning a lot more just a little less often is a worthy trade-off to make in these circumstances. Of course, you’ll end three matching symbols starting from the left to score yourself a win, except for the dragon egg, which does have a payout for just two symbols (during the free spins mode only).
Dragon Egg Scatters
The dragon egg acts as the wild and scatter symbol in this game, meaning it will pay anywhere on the screen. Landing all five of these will pay you a jackpot of 5,000x the total bet during the base game, or an increased prize of 7,500x during the bonus round.
Merlin Journey Of Flame Slot Bonus Features
There’s only a single bonus round included in Merlin: Journey of Flame, but it’s a good one, thankfully! You’ll need to land at least three scatter symbols to trigger the feature, and although you don’t receive any extra spins for hitting more than three scatters, the additional cash payout is more than enough to make up for this, in my opinion!
Free Spins
Once you make it to the free spin’s mode, an extra reel will be unlocked, and a random symbol chosen from the paytable to act as the special expanding symbol for that round. The expanding symbol will move to cover its entire reel whenever it lands, increasing the number of pay lines that you will win on. If you hit just one of the special expanding symbols on all six reels, you’ll automatically be paid a full six of a kind win on all ten pay lines.
Pros
- The graphics and presentation are top-notch – Play’N’Go had their best artists working on this release!
- An attractive jackpot of 7,500x the total bet.
- Did I mention that you can win the jackpot just by hitting all six of the scatter symbols? It couldn’t be any easier…. Right?
Cons
- There’s not a great deal to it – ten-line slots such as this can feel a little bit basic to some players nowadays, but I still really enjoy them and think this game is sure to appeal to fans of games such as Dead or Alive and Book of Dead.
Final Thoughts
I think the single ‘con’ above says it all here really – if you don’t mind the simplicity of it, then you’ll have plenty of fun playing Merlin: Journey of Flame. It looks great and pays even better, and that’s enough for me as far as an online slot is concerned!
