Game Overview
Good King Midas looked outside, on the Feast of Stephen, when the slots spun round and round, casinos full to heaving; oh wait a minute, that was King Wenceslas, wasn’t it? Dear oh dear. No, King Midas was not a biblical character – he was a Greek mythological figure now remembered for his supposed ability to turn anything he touched into gold. That makes the story of King Midas a particularly apt theme for an online slot machine, and Pocket Games Soft’s Midas Fortune release is certainly not the first such game to make its way into the libraries of the online casino industry. This 5×5 grid slot boasts relatively average specifications – PG Soft rates the game as medium volatility, whilst the RTP of 96.73% and a maximum win of 5,000x the total bet are both roughly in line with the industry averages.
As with most grid slots, winning the big prizes can be a tricky affair – the paytable lists payouts for clusters of five, six, or seven symbols, after which the payouts increase in groups up to the biggest prizes, which are reserved for clusters of at least 20 adjacent matching symbols. That’s a big ask, but it’s quite generous compared to other 5×5 grid slots from this developer – you sometimes need nothing less than a full screen of 25 symbols to collect the top payouts! Of course, you couldn’t have a Midas-themed game without a couple of Gold Touch features – we’ll talk about those in depth later in this review. There are also wild multipliers and free spin bonuses to look forward to, so it is a reasonably well-fleshed-out feature set, all things considered.

Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The story of King Midas is always apt whenever talking about something to do with obtaining money via none-employment based means, isn’t it? You probably don’t need reminding, but the tale goes that Midas was obsessed with a ‘golden touch’, and legend has it that after his wish to gain the power to turn wood and stone into gold, he discovered that his powers extended much further than he would like – he could not even eat or drink! Had I been him, I would have given as much gold as possible to those I cared about and then resigned to my fate by eating chunks of solid gold. Come on; you can’t tell me that Demoslot isn’t full of AAA-grade entertainment, can you? I guess I ought to give you at least something useful here, too – Pragmatic Play published two Midas-based games a while back titled The Hand of Midas and unoriginally The Hand of Midas 2 – In my opinion; they are probably the superior games out of the ones being discussed here today – be sure to check them out if Midas Fortune doesn’t do much for you.
Midas Fortune is a ‘match five’ game – or a cluster-paying grid slot as most other developers tend to call them, meaning you’ll need to line up 20 or more adjacent matching symbols to hit the game’s top-tier prizes. King Midas and his lovely Wife sit at the top of the table – as you might expect – and both will pay you 25x your total bet for a maximum 20+ symbol cluster. Three artefacts – a Chest, a Bunch of Grapes, and a Goblet – all share equal returns of 16.66x each, whilst the low-paying royals are each worth 13.33x for a full set. It’s quite a small symbol set, especially considering that all symbols also appear in stacks on the reels. However, it’s a shame that neither the wild nor scatter symbols have any cash premium attached.
In an- age where many developers insist on imposing arbitrary restrictions on your choice of available bets when spinning online slots, the Pocket Games Soft method of doing things is a real breath of fresh air. Opening the bet selection window offers you three coin sizes – €0.01, €0.10, and €0.50 – along with ten bet multiplier levels. Together, these options permit you to bet any multiple of the minimum €0.20 bet up to the point where your run into the game’s upper limit of €100.00 per spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
Midas Fortune utilises a 5×5 reel playfield configuration, which is relatively small by grid slot standards. That creates only 25 positions for symbols to land, so it’s a good job that PG Soft has limited the number of unique symbols on the reels of the game in addition to arranging them in stacks rather than as solo glyphs. Wins are achieved by hitting combinations of five or more matching symbols in horizontal or vertical contact. When this occurs, you’ll be paid according to the paytable before the winning symbols explode, allowing new symbols to cascade into view.
Gold Symbols
During any spin (both base game and bonus round), you may notice some symbols appear to have been transformed into gold. Unfortunately, the wild symbol seems to be immune from the good King’s golden touch – he evidently needs more practice it seems! When these special golden symbols are involved in a winning combination, they will be transformed into wild symbols instead of exploding in the manner described above.
Midas Gold Feature
Should three or more golden symbols appear in an adjacent cluster, the Midas Gold feature will activate, and the entire cluster will transform into a block of wild symbols before the winnings evaluation phase. Unfortunately, three golden symbols can be a little annoying, as there’s no guarantee they will create a winning combination.
Now, should four golden symbols appear in a cluster, that’s a whole other story! When this occurs, every symbol positioned around the edges of the cluster is certain to award a win. This happened several times whilst I was testing this machine, and it always resulted in a nice little boost to my bankroll – it’s always great to have a feature like this available in the base game to keep things fresh between bonus rounds!
Midas Fortune Slot Bonus Features
Bonus scatter symbols can appear anywhere on the playfield, but it isn’t clear if more than one can land within a single column. Most games do not permit such things, but grid slots can often work a little differently from the norm. The paytable states that three scatters award eight free spins, plus two extra spins for each additional scatter symbol – there’s no mention of any limit, and I even checked the developer’s press kit to see if that would reveal anything, and once again, the only information provided is ‘eight or more’ – based on this, I’m guessing that six or more scatters is a possibility!
Free Spins
During the base game, a global multiplier can be achieved by hitting winning combinations that include one or more wild symbols. These multipliers will continue to increase as winning symbols are removed and new ones drop into view – it’s, therefore, possible to trigger the bonus round with a multiplier of up to 10x in effect. Thankfully, when this happens, it will be carried over to your free spins!
In this mode, when one or more wilds form part of a winning combination, they will again be added to the global multiplier shown at the top of the screen. However, unlike in the base game, the multiplier will not reset between free spins.
Should two scatters land anywhere during the bonus round, four more free spins will be added to your remaining total. You can also collect a full eight-spin re-trigger by hitting three or more scatter symbols.
Pros
- The great base game features, such as the Midas Gold Feature and Wild Multipliers, ensure that this isn’t a game that’s only about the bonus round.
- The paytable is very generous when you reach the bigger cluster sizes – I don’t know if that also makes them extremely unlikely to ever appear.
Cons
- The bonus round can be fantastic, but as with many other PGS oft games, I can’t help but feel nervous about the 5,000x maximum jackpot cap – it really should be more than this when the game has such huge potential.
- The theme is a bit cheesy – but certainly not as bad as my opening paragraphs might have made you believe. Sorry about that!
Midas Fortune Slot Review Final Thoughts
He may not be King Wencelas, but the great King Midas sure knows a thing or two about exciting and entertaining online slots! This is a solid effort from PG Soft, especially in terms of the broad feature set and generous paytable. If only the jackpot were a little bigger, this would be a definite must-play.
