The name “Midnight Marauder” doesn’t exactly make you think of a game based entirely on geometric shapes and jewels, but that’s what they have given us. It’s a grid slot, so there is no standard pay lines or pay ways, with wins instead being formed of clusters of at least five matching symbols. The maximum win is a fairly chunky 30,000x your stake.
The game’s headline feature is labelled “Collect & Multiply” and activates whenever a win is achieved. This triggers a series of re-spins which can potentially add more symbols to the initial winning cluster but is also capable of creating several winning clusters which will be multiplied together to give a final winning total. Midnight Marauder Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Endless slots make use of jewels as their symbols, many of them grid slots like this one. Many of them seem to use jewel or a synonym of it in their title, however, unlike Midnight Marauder. Examples would be games such as Jewel Strike, the Bejeweled franchise, Jewel Box, Da Vinci Diamonds, and Jewel of the Arts. What separates Midnight Marauder apart from most of these games is in the way it addresses payout mechanics.
Open the paytable, and it really couldn’t get much simpler – just six symbols are used, with the highest paying one being a large, white gemstone – presumably a diamond – labelled as paying 2x your stake. It’s not quite that simple, however – you are paid for each symbol which forms part of a cluster, and a cluster must comprise of at least five matching symbols. Therefore, the top paying symbol actually pays 10x your stake for a minimum cluster of five, but it would also be possible to gather a larger cluster and earn a higher multiple-of-stake win. Still, with the top symbol returning just 2x your stake for each one comprising part of a winning combination, it doesn’t seem to leave much room for big wins. As we’ll be finding out soon, for big wins, we’re going to need that “Collect & Multiply” feature.
Relax likes to keep things simple with their betting options too, which is ideal when reviewing a game like this! The minimum bet is set at €0.10, whilst the maximum is €0.30 per spin. There are no coin values or bet levels to worry about, and the paytable automatically updates to reflect any changes you make to the current bet size. This is extremely user-friendly interface design and is a credit to Relax and their programmers.
Base Game & Modifiers
The game takes place on a 6×6 grid of symbols, giving a total of 36 positions on which to form matching clusters. With just six different symbols, it may feel as if it should easy enough to line up some wins in Midnight Marauder video slot. Surprisingly, however, the game does still deliver a lot of dead spins. Watching the animation during the introduction, you can imagine why this might be – it shows the “Collect & Multiply” feature collecting several bags together to form a single 525x multiplier, which is then applied to a win. Let’s discuss it in full:
Collect & Multiply Feature
Each time a cluster of winning symbols lands on screen, the Collect & Multiply feature will be triggered. Once the feature activates, all the winning symbols will be collected together into a single money bag with a multiplier attached to it representing the number of symbols which made up the winning cluster. A free re-spin is then awarded.
If the re-spin results in additional symbols landing adjacent to the money bag which matched the symbols that formed the original cluster, those symbols will also be collected into the money bag. If additional clusters land elsewhere on the screen, the same process will happen with those too, with all symbols being gathered together before another re-spin is awarded.
If multiple clusters of different symbols are collected, their totals will be added together rather than multiplied. The magic happens when multiple clusters of identical symbols appear at any time during this process of free re-spins. When this occurs, the multipliers shown on each money bag are multiplied together instead. The final multiplier is applied to the total winnings at the end of the feature, which occurs when a re-spin completes with no more clusters being formed or expanded.
Midnight Marauder Slot Free Spins Feature
You’ll need to hit at least three bonus symbols simultaneously to trigger the bonus round. Three bonus symbols award the minimum of eight free spins, whilst any extra bonus symbols which form part of the triggering combination add an additional two free spins each. For example, if your bonus round is triggered by five bonus symbols, you will receive 12 free spins instead of eight. During free spins, any further bonus symbols which land on screen will add one extra free spin to your remaining total.
Buy Feature
If permitted in your jurisdiction, you can also purchase a three-scatter bonus trigger (eight free spins) for 100x your current stake. This seems quite high to me because there are no special features or modifiers during the free spins. I did seem to get quite lucky during the free spin feature during testing though – it’s possible that the ratios of each symbol are modified during the free spin feature, similarly to how many games use different reel strips during free spins.
Midnight Marauder Slot Review Final Thoughts
I had plenty of fun testing out Midnight Marauder, though I never did work out what the name was all about. I kept waiting for a burglar character to wander onto the screen wearing a balaclava and throw some extra money bags at the reels, but he never showed up. I’d normally put this down to bad luck, but I suspect his complete absence from the paytable is probably the more likely reason.
Joking around aside, Relax has done a great job of creating a fun and interesting grid slot here. If I had to point out a negative, it would be that the advertised “maximum win” of 30,000x your stake is, in fact, a hard limit imposed on the games free spin bonus round. If you manage to win 30,000x your stake, your bonus round will end prematurely with any remaining free spins being forfeit. That’s a bit cheeky, Relax, but as this is a fun game and 30,000x is a decent chunk of change, we’ll let you off… this time!
