Mines (Hacksaw Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

Who remembers that infuriating ‘Minesweeper’ game that shipped with every copy of Windows up until around the year 2000? It was fiendishly addictive, but the best thing about it was no matter where you went – no matter how mundane – you could always engage in a bit of Minesweeper (or perhaps Solitaire for the less masochistic amongst you) to keep you entertained. Now it’s back – courtesy of Hacksaw Gaming – and this time, there’s money on the line. Oh yes. Mines is a Minesweeper clone for those who like to play without clue numbers and enjoy losing money when they scream at the monitor as a mine destroys all of their hard work. Sounds like fun, right? Well, maybe not, but the little matter of a 10,000x jackpot and 98% RTP might do a little to sway your mind. Maybe.

Not being a slot per se, there’s little in the way of features to tell you about here – you get a five-by-five grid (configurable to 9×9 if you really love punishment), and 22 of the spots will win you the prize denoted above the main game area…. Three (again, or 9 of them, for the sadists amongst you) of them will cause you to lose everything that you have accumulated so far. How long can your nerve hold out? It’s all immaculately presented, sporting an exceptionally polished interface….but Hacksaw get precious few points from me for that; they’re too good at this by now!

Fancy rekindling the most frustrating moments of your Windows 95 days? Ah, who am I kidding? Nobody reading this used Windows 95! But check out our free demo of Mines anyway – it’s a good crack!

Theme? Oh my, this is going to be a tricky one, isn’t it? Short of talking about warzones and people having their legs blown off – hardly light reading – there isn’t much of a theme to a game about mines, is there? No, I think a better comparison would be to casino classics such as Baccarat, Blackjack, or Roulette. It’s the type of game you probably won’t be spending hours playing, and the times when you clear 15 or more spots before hitting a mine will have you wanting to throw your laptop out of the window…. As they say, player discretion is advised!

So how much can you win? There’s no way I’m suffering through the harder difficulty levels to tell you all of the possibilities – sadly, Hacksaw hasn’t been kind enough to list them! But I did manage to get to the end of the 3×3 configuration with one mine, for a total win of… x8.82. Hmmm. Hardly 10,000x, is it? I tried upping the grid size to 9×9, but with five mines selected here, then you can pick a very high number of spots and still not make it to 3x your bet. Upping the number of mines at this configuration to the maximum of 20 makes your winnings jump up extremely fast, but trust me – when you hit a mine and see how many of them there are, you’ll be amazed you lasted as long as you did! Still, the reconfigurability of the game is what makes it so compelling, in my view, and I suspect that there will be some players who will revel in the

As for the betting range, I’m not sure if this will apply in real money mode, but the demo allows you to play between €0.20 and €1000.00 per round. Do so at your peril!

Base Game & Modifiers

Mines Gameplay
Mines Gameplay

We’ve already covered most of the basic gameplay of Mines at this point – but just in case you’ve never played Minesweeper before, here’s an extra little run-through to get you fully initiated. Mines is a classic game where the objective of the game is to pick cells from a grid – the size is of your choosing, as is the number of mines. Behind each cell might be a diamond, but there may also be a mine! Collecting diamonds will increase your winnings, but beware – hit just one mine, and all those winnings are gone!

After you place your initial wager, each pick from the grid is free. If you feel you have been lucky enough already, there’s a quit button at the bottom of the screen to allow you to cash in, something that I would thoroughly advise if you have somehow managed to clear more than two-thirds of the minefield!

Mines Bonus Features

There are no bonus round or special features included in Mines, I’m afraid!

Pros

  • The most well-presented Mines-style game that I’ve come across so far – typically high-quality stuff from Hacksaw Gaming.
  • You can win an awful lot – 10,000x your bet – but I have my doubts if it has ever been accomplished!

Cons

  • Don’t play it too much – it will drive you crazy if you let it!

Final Thoughts

An excellent take on the classic Mines formula – if you want to play something other than slots and cards, this could be just the ticket.
