Money Train 4 (Relax Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

Well, reviewing this release has turned out to be quite the switchback railway! The Money Train series of online slots have turned out to be nothing short of a sensation since the first game thundered onto the web in August 2019. Since then, Relax Gaming has continued to up the ante by publishing two sequels, doubling the maximum possible jackpot on each occasion. This time, the top prize hasn’t quite doubled; don’t be too disappointed though, as it’s still risen from 100,000x to 150,000x the total bet. Today’s review of the Money Train 4 slot could mark the end of an era, as Relax Gaming has publicly stated that this will be the final iteration of the Money Train. Assuming that to be true, does this release see them go out with a bang or a whimper?

As you might expect, many of the features which have made the previous games such a success have returned for the fourth instalment. For example, the re-spin modifier introduced in the last game has been retained here, and, of course, what kind of Money Train sequel would this be if it didn’t offer the craziest Money Cart bonus round so far?! Both of these features are great to see, but how about the new stuff? The most obvious change is the switch from payline-based prizes to a scatter-pay mechanic. There’s also a new, larger playfield – 6×6 this time around, compared to 5×5 in the previous game. These changes have not changed the numbers that Relax is charging for the regular and persistent (enhanced) bonus buy options: purchasing those will set you back 100x and 500x the total bet, respectively.

I don’t need to sell this one to you, but just so you know – I tried a dozen or so bonus buys before beginning to write this review and managed to hit a win of over 73,000x my bet within that short time. Even though I was playing in demo mode, I instinctively jumped out of my chair, spilt my drink on my keyboard, and lost the opportunity to take a screenshot. If you fancy some of that excitement for yourself, you know what to do – our free Money Train 4 slot demo is available to play below!

The evolution of the Money Train games is fascinating to explore – Relax has strived to improve the game with each new release but has never strayed too far from the original formula. Unlike some other software studios, Relax made sure to create brand new assets for the release of both Money Train 2 and Money Train 3, giving every game in the series its own unique and distinct look. There have even been a couple of spinoffs in the form of Money Train Origins and Slingo Money Train, along with a related Money Cart series that extracts the gameplay of each main-line title’s bonus round and presents it as a separate game. All of these things demonstrate the overwhelming popularity of the Money Train brand, and I have zero doubt that players will be mesmerised by the Money Train 4 slot the moment they spin its reels for the first time.

The switch to scatter-pay-based gameplay is potentially the biggest change in the series’ history. Previous sequels have increased the number of paylines and made the playfield bigger, but this is the first time that the primary payout mechanic has changed. Under the new paradigm, the four character symbols have maximum payouts of 100x, 50x, 40x, and 25x the total bet for the red, yellow, green, and blue outlaws, respectively. Those prizes require nothing short of a full screen of matching symbols, however, so don’t expect to see them occur very often. As for the low pays, the four playing card suits have been used for these – the spades and hearts are the higher-paying symbols with maximum returns of 12.5x, whilst the clubs and diamonds pay a little less at 10x each. Relax has colour-matched the suits with the high-paying symbols, so all you need to remember is that red/yellow is always worth more than green/blue.

Those searching for problems with Relax’s Money Train 4 slot might point to the game’s limited betting range. The minimum/maximum permitted stakes have limits of just €0.10 and €6.00, respectively, potentially excluding players with the largest bankrolls. However, for a game with a 150,000x jackpot, the top bet still represents a potential jackpot of close to a million Euros.

Money Train 4 Slot Base Game

Despite the changes to the playfield and payout mechanics, the Money Train 4 slot still feels like a natural successor to the previous game. The switch to a larger playfield does allow for larger headline numbers on the paytable – the highest-paying symbol in this game maxes out at 100x rather than 20x in Money Train 3 – but in reality, the requirement of hitting 36 matching symbols to receive such a win makes those prizes incredibly unlikely. You still need 30 matching symbols to win the second-placed prize for the red outlaw, and the payout for this is only a tenth of that for the 36-symbol combination.

Respin Modifier

The re-spin modifier was “nice to have” in the last game, but it’s a make-or-break feature for a slot which reserves its top prizes for a full screen of matching symbols. The modifier can kick in randomly after any spin, and all occurrences of the symbol which currently occupies the most positions on the grid will be locked in place at that time.

The reels will then begin to re-spin, after which any symbols that match those currently locked will lock into place along with them. This procedure will repeat indefinitely until a re-spin does not add any further symbols to your winning combination or a full screen of matches is achieved.

There’s also a new multiplier symbol that does not become sticky, but their values will be added up and stored until the end of the feature before being applied to your total win.

Money Train 4 Slot Bonus Features

Despite the huge playfield, you still only require three scatter symbols in Money Train 4 to trigger a Money Cart bonus round. If one of your scatters happens to be of the golden variety, your bonus will be upgraded to the more lucrative persistent feature.

Money Cart Feature

At the start of each bonus feature on Relax’s Money Train 4 slot, all triggering symbols will transform into new icons, including a multiple of the current stake. If you were fortunate enough to land a golden symbol in your triggering combination, this would instead transform into one of the persistent special symbols listed below.

This is a three-spin feature, meaning you’ll start with three “lives” and need to keep those topped up by landing new symbols during your spins. If three consecutive spins pass by with no new symbols landing, the bonus will end. Should you fill an entire row with symbols during the Money Cart bonus, a new row will be added to the playfield. There is a chance that this row will already contain some symbols that landed outside the active area on previous spins.

Most of those reading this will already be familiar with some aspects of the Money Cart bonus, so I won’t bore you by describing all of the special symbols which have been ported over from the three previous games here. All you really need to know is that the collector, payer, sniper, and necromancer are back, along with an arms dealer and both persistent and adjacent variants of most of the above. It’s also possible to land an unlock symbol this time around, immediately opening up an additional row, boost your lives counter up to 4 or 5 lives, and even upgrade between one and three existing special symbols to their persistent variants.

I can’t resist mentioning this one more time – this combination of special symbols is utterly insane. I managed to hit a win of over 73,000x my bet within just a dozen or so bonus rounds – obviously, I was extremely lucky, but I genuinely went into shock after hitting that win; I could cry over the fact I was not laying for real money!

Bonus Buy

Those fortunate enough to live in a region where these features are permitted can pay either 100x the total bet for a regular bonus round or 500x for a guaranteed persistent symbol before the feature starts. The latter option is extremely costly, but judging from my experiences, I’d have to say it is almost certainly worth the money for those who can afford it.

Pros

  • The increased jackpot of 150,000x improves what was already an impressive maximum prize.
  • The switch to scatter-pay gameplay is a welcome one and opens up new opportunities for huge wins during the base game.
  • The improved Money Cart bonus is simply phenomenal and should surprise even the most committed disciple of the Money Train franchise.

Cons

  • Limited stakes may disappoint players with the bankroll to bet larger than €6.00 per spin.
  • The maximum payouts for each symbol are impressive, but as they require a full screen of matching symbols, they are certain to be extremely rare.

Money Train 4 Slot Review Final Thoughts

Relax just keeps on smashing it with their Money Train online slots – for me, this is the best version so far, and if what the developer says is true, then this series is going out on a seriously high note. Fans of high-variance slots cannot afford to miss this release – it’s a definite candidate for slot of the year.
