Monopoly Megaways (Big Time Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

If I asked you to name the most popular board game in the world, I’d near enough guarantee that you’d say Monopoly. It’s hardly surprising as there are over 1,500 official versions of the game, ranging from the classic edition we all know and love to more modern trends and crazes like Pokemon, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. It’s going to come as no real shock either that this famous game has made its way into the world of online slots, with developer Big Time Gaming putting together a great looking slot titled Monopoly Megaways. As for a quick rundown on the stats, this is a 6-reel machine with up to 117,649 paylines, a high RTP of 96.39%, and a maximum win of 14,700x bet.

The feature set is certainly an interesting one, and let’s begin with the cascading reels mechanic. This activates each time a win is created, with the winning symbols exploding from the reels and being replaced with new ones for extra chances to win. This works in tandem with the collection part of the game, where landing on the iconic street names after a series of cascades will help to build your bonus round and eventually trigger the free spins feature when you accumulate five houses on a single property. Once the bonus begins, you’ll have a win multiplier in play that increases each time you land on a property containing a house. In addition, extra free spins can be won by landing on any of the train stations.

Monopoly Megaways Slot Paytable
Monopoly Megaways slot paytable

With a theme as powerful and long-standing as Monopoly, there have been previous attempts to bring this game into an online slot format in the past, but we have yet to see anything quite as well developed as Big Time Gaming’s version, especially when you consider they have incorporated their now legendary Megaways mechanic into the slot. Following on from the release of this game, industry giants Evolution Gaming also brought the famous Mr Monopoly to life in a live casino format, and I’d highly recommend you check out Monopoly Big Baller if you haven’t played it already. Actually, whilst we’re on the subject of other game variations, Monopoly Slingo might also interest you. Anyways, let’s get back to today’s version though, and head over to the pays section to see how much you can win.

Staring at the top of the paytable, we have the hat that will pay 50x the bet for a six of a kind win. Next is the boat, which drops significantly in value down to 5x bet for a completed line of five. Next is the car worth 1.5 for all six, and the last of the premium value symbols is the dog paying just 0.9x for a winning combo of six. As for the low pays, these are represented by six royals, with the Ace and King both valued at 0.6x for a full payline, the Queen and Jack worth 0.5x for a line of six and finally, the Ten and Nine, both sharing equal payouts of 0.4x for a six of a kind hit. The game also includes a multicoloured wild symbol that only appears on reels 2 to 6. This will substitute for every other symbol in the slot.

BTG tend to be very good with the bet sizes they offer within their slots, and players have plenty to choose from in Monopoly Megaways. Stakes start at just €0.20 a spin, with the maximum price per play reaching €20. The good news is that there are plenty of intermediate bets between these two amounts, meaning players of all budgets that fancy a punt on the game will be well catered for.

How To Play Monopoly Megaways – Base Game & Modifers

Monopoly Megaways Slot Base Game
Monopoly Megaways slot base game

The gameplay takes place over the classic Megaways reel format of 6×7, which allows the slot to generate up to a maximum of 117,649 paylines on any spin. Players can hit a winning combo by matching at least three symbols starting from left to right, or two in the case of hat highest paying hat symbol.

As for the rest of the base game, there is quite a lot going on, and how your play develops through this will determine the type of free spin feature you ultimately trigger. This will sound familiar in some aspects to those who have played Big Time Gaming’s similarly styled slot Holy Diver Megaways where a sword-wielding knight makes his way through the game collecting valuable chests and gems.

In Monopoly Megaways, Mr Monopoly himself will wander around the game board building up your property portfolio. This is a very important aspect of the slot, so let’s dig into the finer details and see how it all works.

Cascading Reels

Also known as reactions, reel cascades occur and play an integral part in how the Monopoly Megaways game mechanics work. Each time a winning combination is made on the reels, those symbols involved in the win will be removed and replaced by new ones that will drop down from above. Furthermore, for every successful reaction, Mr Monopoly will move around the game board, landing on the various squares and rewarding you with additional features and bonuses.

House Symbols & Modifiers

At the top left-hand side of the game screen, you will notice the iconic Monopoly Houses. Each winning connection and reel cascade will move you one house further along. It’s clearly noticeable that the first two houses are blanked out, and whilst two successive wins will still move Mr Monopoly around the board, things start to get interesting from the 3rd consecutive cascade.

The 3rd win will move Mr Monopoly to a property on the board and add one house, four consecutive wins will see him move and add two houses to a property, five wins in a row will see him add three houses, and so this pattern of additional houses being added with each consecutive cascade will continue until no further wins are achieved, or you trigger the free spin feature.

The following features and bonuses are added when Mr Monopoly lands on the corresponding game spaces on the board.

  • Landing on the GO Square: If you land on the GO Square, then the next spin of the reels will be at the maximum of 117,649 Megaways.
  • Landing on a Train Station: Each time you land on one of the train stations, you will own it. The importance of this comes when the free spin feature is triggered, as every station you own when the bonus is triggered will add one free spin to your total.
  • Landing on a Utility: If Mr Monopoly lands on any of the utilities, you will own them. This will be displayed at the top right-hand side of the screen. When you have triggered the free spin bonus, each utility you hold will increase your bonus round starting multiplier by x1.
  • Community Chest: When Mr Monopoly lands on a Community Chest square, it will send you to a random property on the board. It may also award you between 1 – 4 houses to add to that property.
  • Chance: One of three possibilities can happen when landing on the chance square. You can either be sent to a random property on the board where there is also the chance of 1 – 4 houses being added to it, you can be awarded a card where your next spin will be at the maximum amount of Megaways, or lastly, the free spin feature can be triggered.

Monopoly Megaways Slot Bonus Features

Monopoly Megaways Slot Free Spins Feature

To trigger the free spin feature on Monopoly Megaways, you must either collect five houses on one of the game properties or be awarded it randomly when landing on the chance square. Triggering the feature will award you eight free spins, but it doesn’t end there. As previously mentioned, if you own any train stations, you will be awarded one extra spin for each one you own, and again, as we discussed earlier, your starting multiplier will increase by x1 for each utility property you own.

Free Spins

Once the free spin bonus is underway, the importance of building up your property portfolio in the base game becomes apparent. Again, whenever you hit a winning combination, Mr Monopoly will manoeuvre himself around the board. When he lands on a property containing any houses, your multiplier will increase in value by the number of houses on that square. The chance and community chest squares are also active in the bonus, and there are possibilities of being awarded Max Megaways spins or advanced to the stations when you land on them.

Re-triggers are achieved by landing or being advanced to the train stations during the bonus feature. Every time you land on a station, you will be awarded an additional 3 extra spins, and hitting a couple of these really can make the difference to how well your feature eventually plays out.

Players should note that when the free spin feature ends, their collected stations and utilities will be removed, and you will have to collect them again. Any houses still on the board will carry over and remain in place, potentially making it easier to trigger your next bonus.

Pros

  • Based on one of the world's most popular board games.

Cons

  • It can take hours to trigger the free spins feature.
  • The maximum win of 14,700x seems totally unrealistic, and I've never heard of anyone even coming close to winning it.

Final Thoughts

When Big Time Gaming released Holy Diver Megaways, it received a lukewarm response at best, so it was always a risk to make Monopoly Megaways another collection style slot. For me, it doesn't quite make the grade and becomes quite tedious to play if I'm honest, as you know that you're not going to get a quick feature out of it, as it's just not that style of slot.If you did want to stick with his game, I'd suggest playing around 100 - 200 spins on it each time you have a blast on the slots, and then at some point, you will have built up a good collection of houses and could potentially get yourself a high paying bonus on one off your playing sessions.
