Game Overview
Stephen King famously said, “Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.” That’s actually quite a thought provoking quote and one to ponder over your morning coffee or bedtime read of our review. Anyway, whilst today’s game may not be based on any of King’s published novels or movies, Red Tiger Gaming’s Monsters Unchained slot does feature a few familiar faces. Oh, and as for the stats, this is 5 reel game that offers up to 15,625 paylines, an RTP of 96%, and a maximum win of 10,500x bet.
We’ve got a real mixed bag of a feature set in Monsters Unchained, with the base gameplay set in cycles of ten spins. Collect special character modifier symbols on the first nine spins, and then they will all activate on the 10th and final spin, potentially adding more ways to win, wilds, and multipliers. Things get even more interesting if you hit the three scatter symbols to trigger the Monster Free Spins bonus. During this round, any modifiers collected will be active on every spin, giving players a real chance to unlock some massive wins in the game.
This could be a real horror fest of a game, so there is no hiding behind your hands or pillow; in fact, why not give yourself a sneak peek of what to expect and try out the free demo slot of Monsters Unchained. It’s ready and waiting for you to play below.
Monsters Unchained Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Whilst some game providers have taken on the monster/horror niche seriously, most slots you come across often have a far more light-hearted approach. A prime example of that would be Pragmatic Play’s Monster Avalanche or Playtech’s Monster Multipliers, so to see some legendary mythological creatures on show in Red Tiger’s Monsters Unchained will undoubtedly be a real treat for some players. Personally, whilst I’m not a diehard fan of such movies and books, I can remember watching and enjoying the much older original movies in the 80s, such as Clash of the Titans, that feature some of the nasty-looking characters within the game. Speaking of which, let’s jump in and head over to the pays section and see what it has to offer.
Things don’t appear to be starting too well, with the highest paying symbol of the treasure chest only paying 5x for a six of a kind win. However, I guess we should remember that the game can reach up to 15,625 ways to win, so that would account for the lower values we see here. Next, we have the lantern worth 2x for a completed line of six, followed by the axe at 1.5x and finally, the shackles, which pay 1x bet for a full line of six. The low pays, represented by the five royals, are the Ace worth 0.8x for a full line, The King at 0.6x, followed by the Queen at 0.5x, and last up, we have the Jack and Ten both paying 0.4x if you hit a six of a kind win.
Real money play begins at just €0.10 a spin, with the maximum stake on the game reaching €10. There are a reasonable amount of options between this range which should make it easy for players of all sized budgets to find a bet size relative to their bankroll.
Base Game & Modifiers
The initial play on Monsters Unchained begins on a reel set of 5×3 with a total of 243 ways to win. Landing at least three matching symbols on the playfield starting from the leftmost reel first will award the corresponding win from the paytable.
Once you hit the spin button, you’ll begin the cycle of 10 spins that plays out in the base game. The hope is that you collect as many modifying symbols as possible in the first nine spins, which all activate on the 10th and final spin. Check out the modifiers and what they can do below.
Character Modifiers
Three chains hold down each of the monsters, and on any spin, it’s possible that either a red, green or blue chain breaker symbol will land and cut one of the chains from its respective monster. Each broken chain will add one step to the monster’s meter with all active modifiers then kicking in on the 10th spin. As you’d likely expect, the more chains you break, the more powerful the modifier will be.
- Minotaur: If the red chain breaker symbol lands, it will cut one of the chains from the Minotaur. If this is active on the 10th spin, then it will increase the size of the grid to 5×4, 5×5, or 6×5 for 1, 2, and 3 broken chains, respectively.
- Medusa: Landing the green chain break symbol will cut one of the chains from Medusa. If she is active on the final spin, then 2-3, 4-5, or 6-7 wild symbols will be added to random positions on the reels for 1, 2, and 3 broken chains, respectively.
- Cerberus: Hitting a blue chain break symbol will cut a chain from Cerberus. If this modifier is in play on your last spin, then a 2x/3x, 4x/5x, or 6x/7x win multiplier will be added.
Monsters Unchained Slot Bonus Features
If the bonus scatter symbols land on reels 1, 3, and 5, the main feature will be triggered, and 10 free spins will be awarded. However, players should note that it is not possible for scatters to land on the 10th spin, and if the bonus is activated with modifiers in play, they will not be carried over to the free spins feature.
Free Spins
When the free spins are in play, any chains that are broken will activate on the next spin. The reel expansion awarded by Minotaur and the win multiplier awarded by Cerberus will then remain active, whilst Medusa will place wilds on random reel positions on each spin until the end of the bonus game. If you manage to break all three of a monster’s chains, you’ll be awarded an additional 3 spins. So, in theory, it is possible to play a total of 19 spins.
Pros
- Interesting modifiers, making the base game exciting to play too.
- Great theme and is very well presented.
- Respectable max win of 10,500x bet.
Cons
- You can potentially run out of money halfway through a cycle of 10 spins.
- Win values could be considered as being a little low if you don't get a good set up with the modifiers.
Final Thoughts
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with Monsters Unchained and found myself playing the demo for quite a considerable amount of time. I think that was due to the base game being able to offer some fairly decent payouts without the need to trigger the free spins. However, if you can get to the bonus round ( Red Tiger slots are notoriously hard to trigger, for me, at least ), Then you have the chance to get all three modifiers active and in their most powerful form for a good number of spins, which will surely lead to a chance of hitting the max win.
