Game Overview
If you’re a developer of an online slot that has gone on to be a hugely successful release, there’s always going to be the temptation of making a sequel, and this is something we have seen time and time again in the industry, with some slot games proving to be better than the original, and others falling short of the mark. Today is the turn of SG Gaming as we take Montezuma Megaways through its paces, a 6-reel slot with up to 117,649 ways to win, an RTP of 96.17%, and a maximum win of 12,500x bet.
SG have opted for a tried and tested method with their sequel as the slot is played over a standard Megaways format of 6×7 with the cascading reels mechanic activating after a winning combination has been made. The main highlight of the game is the free spins feature, which is triggered when three or more scatters land in view. An unlimited win multiplier is in play during this round, increasing by x1 after each winning cascade. Additionally, players can increase the win multiplier when two scatters hit, activating the multiplier wheel, which can add up to 100x to the current multiplier value.
Was SG Gaming right to make a follow-up game to Montezuma? Or should they have left the original untouched? You can make your own judgment by playing our Montezuma Megaways demo slot; it’s free to play below.
Montezuma Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Aztec themed slots have proven to be a niche that has resonated well with players, and SG Gaming’s Montezuma free play slot is one of the most played titles here at Demoslot to be released within that genre. Due to its popularity, and with SG licensing Megaways from Big Time Gaming, it wasn’t much of a surprise to see some of the provider’s games getting a Megaways makeover, with our Rainbow Riches Megaways free play slot well worth checking out if you’re a fan of old school land based UK slot machines. However, today, we’re here to cast our eyes over Montezuma Megaways in a full slot review, so let’s kick things off at the pays section.
Sitting proudly at the top of the paytable, we have Montezuma, who will return 25x the bet for a full line of six. He is followed by the Aztec Queen, who drops in value considerably, returning just 1x for a complete payline. Rounding off the premium pays are the Eagle and Head-dress, both worth 0.5x and the Mask and Snake, with equal returns of 0.25x. The lower value symbols on the slot are represented by the royals, where the Ace pays 0.25x, and the King, Queen and Jack all share payouts of 0.2x for a six of a kind win. There’s also a Wild symbol that can appear on the upper reel only, with this substituting for all other regular in-game symbols.
Those seeking out real money play on Montezuma Megaways are presented with a reasonable sized bet selection where the minimum price to spin is €0.20, with the maximum stake on the game reaching €20 a press.
Montezuma Megaways Slot Base Game & Modifiers
Montezuma Megaways is played over a 6×7 reel formation where the Megaways engine can generate up to a maximum of 117,649 ways to win on any spin. It’s now pretty much the norm for any slot that has 117,649 paylines to include the cascading reels feature, and Montezuma Megaways is no exception. Each time a winning combination is achieved on the reels, the symbols that make up that win will be removed and replaced with new symbols. This will continue until there are no further winning connections, and then that spin will end.
Respin Wheel
After the reels have stopped spinning, if it is a non-winning spin, then the respin wheel may randomly trigger. This wheel gives players another chance at hitting a winning combination.
Montezuma Megaways Slot Bonus Features
To trigger the free spin feature on Montezuma Megaways, you will need to land 3 or more of the scatter symbols anywhere in view; if you successfully do this, then you will be taken to the free spin wheel, where you can be awarded anything up to 30 free spins to begin your feature with. It should be noted that hitting more than 3 scatters will result in higher values on the wheel.
Free Spins Feature
As the free spin bonus begins, you will start with a win multiplier of x1; for each successful reel cascade you achieve, this multiplier will increase by x1 in value. If two or more scatter symbols land anywhere in view, it will trigger the Montezuma Multiplier Wheel, where a top multiplier value of 100x can be awarded, depending on how many scatters you trigger it with. The result of the spin will be added to your current unlimited multiplier value for all subsequent spins.
Triggering the multiplier wheel on the last of your free spins will activate the Mega Win Multiplier. The total win from the entirety of your free spin feature will be multiplied by the total that the wheel stops on. The maximum multiplier amount that can be awarded is a massive 25x.
Bonus Guarantee
If the total award of your bonus feature is less than 30x, your current win will be rounded up to that value. The bonus guarantee is something players may be familiar with from the original version of this game.
Bonus Buy
Players are given the option to access the buy the bonus feature on Montezuma Megaways directly, and this is done through the buy pass option. Those wishing to take up this opportunity can do so for the cost of 85x their stake.
If you wish to reduce the cost of buying the bonus, you can choose in the settings to either bank all wins or bank small wins. The banking small wins option will add wins of 3x your stake or below to the bonus bank.
Pros
- The Mega Multiplier can increase the size of your winnings drastically if you're lucky enough to land it.
Cons
- SG didn't utilise the wheel the same way as the original.
Montezuma Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts
Having been a massive fan of Montezuma, I was looking forward to the Megaways version, expecting it to be bigger and better than ever. Unfortunately, for me, at least, this wasn't the case, and the multiplier wheel is a bit of a letdown, to be honest.I much preferred how they used it in the original to give you free spins at a set multiplier, but in the sequel, you either get more value added to your current multiplier, which is needed as the wins are so low, or a chance at glory on the last spin on the mega wheel, which I've never seen land to date.Overall, this is a missed opportunity for me, and given the choice, I'll always pick the original slot over the Megaways.
