Mustang Trail (Pragmatic Play) Slot Demo & Review

How many times have you visited the beast-filled planes of South Asia and Africa during your lifetime? For most of us, I’d guess the answer would be, “Are you joking”! That hasn’t stopped Pragmatic Play from coming up with yet another online slot that closely resembles the Buffalo franchise. However, Mustang Trail is just the latest example of what is undoubtedly becoming something of a trend in the online casino world. Mustang Trail’s contribution to the genre does not seem particularly interesting, if I’m honest – first impressions aren’t everything though! With a maximum jackpot prize of 5,000x, the 10-payline game offers little more than a 96.04% RTP – all about as average as it gets.

Aside from the decent payouts attached to the game’s ten regular symbols, there are a handful of features worth discussing in Mustang Trail. Wild symbols act as a modifier of sorts, duplicating themselves a random number of times into random positions on the playfield each time they land. The free spin feature follows a similar technique by allowing players to collect scatter symbols on a meter and awarding them with sticky wilds each time the meter is filled. Throw in a bonus buy facility priced at 100x the total bet, and that’s your lot as far as the feature set is concerned.

It probably hasn’t been long since slots took you on a trip to the Wild West, but don’t let that put you off – be sure to check out our Mustang Trail slot demo, available to play below:

Mustang Trail Paytable

The original Buffalo online slot wasn’t much to shout about, but even so, it was a Las Vegas exclusive for some time. The machine was popular as its Astrocractic developers soon came out with a follow-up in the form of Buffalo Gold. That’s where the story begins, and whilst I have spotted the original Buffalo available to play online recently, Buffalo Gold and its endless enhanced editions still seem reserved for the patrons of Las Vegas casinos only. That may well be attracting the odd obsession tourist, I expect, but clones such as Buffalo Rising Megaways and, apparently, Buffalo Blitz have done excellent jobs of re-creating the formula for us at home. I’m pleased to say that all of these clones do an excellent job of replicating the excitement of the original, and Mustang Trail looks like it may well hit the mark as well.

Moving on to the paytable, the top symbol looks to be a horse rather than a Rhino and offers a maximum return of 150x the total bet for a full pay line. Yes, you did read that correctly – this machine uses just ten paylines, which undoubtedly explains why it plays so differently from its “source material”. Four more high-paying symbols are shown with oval outlines around them – the ram at 75x, the crow at 50x, the moose at 50x, and the frog at 20x. As for the low-paying symbols, Pragmatic Play has opted to keep things simple here by using traditional royals between 10 and A, but all five items in the group have the same max payout of 10x the total bet.

The wager selection set up is precisely what we have come to expect from Pragmatic Play – three controls, one for the bet, one for the coin value, and another for modifying the size of your bet directly. With all sliders positioned to their leftmost position, you’ll have a total bet of €0.10 per spin. On the other hand, €100.00 per spin is the maximum amount permitted for those with deeper pockets.

Base Game & Modifiers

Mustang Trail Base Game
Mustang Trail base game

The base game of Mustang Trail is just about as basic as they come, you’ve got the old faithful reel setup containing three rows of five symbols, and wins are paid according to the values shown on the game’s paytable. I felt that this was quite generous for a 10 payline slot machine, especially the highest-paying symbol with its 150x maximum return. Of course, you’ll need all five reels to contain a matching symbol to get the big prizes such as that one, but smaller payouts can be found for hitting just three matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left.

Wild Modifier

During the base game, every wild that lands on the screen will trigger a mini-feature whereby several random wilds will be added to the playfield in random positions. This can be extremely useful – but it can also be completely worthless as well. It’s all down to luck, I guess, much like everything else to do with these machines!

Mustang Trail Slot Bonus Features

Mustang Trail Free Spins Feature
Mustang Trail free spins feature

The scatter symbols featured in Musang Trail only appear on reels one, three, and five, so you’ll need to be lucky to catch all of these simultaneously!

Free Spins

Beat the odds, and you will find yourself inside the free spins feature, with eight spins waiting on your remaining counter. Every scatter that lands during this part of the game will be collected in a meter. Furthermore, every third collected scatter will re-trigger the feature, boosting your counter with 5 more free spins and adding a random sticky wild symbol to the reels in a random position.

Bonus Buy

I almost feel as if slot developers have gone crazy recently – the bonus buy facility offered in this game costs just 50x the normal price per spin, making it a real bargain, in my view.

Pros

  • The expanding wilds can often surprise by awarding sizable base game wins.
  • A simple concept that works well thanks to the inclusion of the bonus round, which seems to pop up frequently.
  • Cheap bonuses buy facility.

Cons

  • The jackpot is stated as 5,000x, but as the most valuable symbol combination possible is just 1,500x, you’ll have to be extraordinarily lucky to reach it!
  • Bonus rounds are often over far too quickly if the game doesn’t want to award a re-trigger or two. Wouldn’t 10 free spins have been possible, PP?

Final Thoughts

I have no doubt that loyal fans of Pragmatic Play will find this an entertaining game, but I just wasn't sold by it after playing it and writing my review. However, to conclude, I think it would be fair to say that Mustang Trail sure isn’t perfect, but it’s not one for the scrap heap, either. Be sure to check it!
