Game Overview
The 80’s aesthetic is a seemingly timeless look that appeals to many more people than just those who were young during that decade. The neon pinks and purples commonly associated with the era form the backbone of the presentation in Slotmill’s Neon Dreams online slot, a nine-reel game that takes place on a 3×3 grid with an RTP of 96.2% and a maximum win cap of 5,000x stake.
The introduction screen explains the games features including a free re-spin for hitting four matching symbols, a bonus game with an ascending multiplier awarded for hitting five matching symbols, and a special star which multiplies your winnings at the end of a spin.
Despite looking like an old school three-reel game, this is actually an innovative and fresh take on the online slot machine. Give it a try yourself with our free demo slot of Neon Dreams below.
Neon Dreams Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
First, we will talk about the theme a little more; some other reviews have called the look of this game “futuristic”, but that certainly isn’t the feel that I get from looking at the graphics and symbols in this game. Retro-futuristic maybe, but the neon signs that the symbols are designed to look like here are likely to be a thing of the past very soon as everything moves towards longer-lasting and more environmentally friendly LED-based lighting. Even the music has a definite 80’s vibe to it; it’s a disco-like sound with a bunch of synthesizers thrown in but isn’t so in as your face as to get annoying quickly. I really quite enjoyed, but futuristic it ain’t!
Over to the paytable, whilst all of the symbols are designed to look like Neon lighting displays, the pictures they represent are something completely different. The diamonds, lucky sevens, bells and bars are all reminiscent of an old school fruit machine – yet another nod to the 1980’s! Because each position on the screen in Neon Dreams online slot is its own reel, you can win by hitting anywhere between three and nine matching symbols. The diamond is the best of the bunch with a return of 1x your stake for three, 20x your stake for seven, and 200x your stake for all nine. This drops off quick unfortunately, and the lucky seven returns just 0.5x for three, 10x for seven, or 40x for all nine. The returns for hitting nine symbols seem very attractive, but I should note that I never managed to hit more than seven matching symbols during testing, and that was always with the lower-paying symbols.
Neon Dreams video slot uses Slotmill’s standard bet selection setup of two buttons for increasing and decreasing your bet positioned on either side of the spin button. The minimum bet per spin is €0.10 whilst the maximum is €25.00.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of the Neon Dreams online slot uses an unusual 3×3 grid of reels, with each of the nine positions shown on screen spinning independently of each other. This strange configuration means that there are no pay lines or pay ways as with many other online slots, replaced instead by a “pays anywhere” mechanic that only requires you to hit three or matching symbols anywhere on the screen.
Free Respin Feature
Hitting four matching symbols will award you a free re-spin of any non-matching positions, increasing your chances of triggering the bonus game. The free re-spin does not repeat, but it does give you an extra shot at gathering enough symbols for the larger wins at the high end of the paytable.
Burst Mode Feature
This is a Slotmill-specific mode which is described as “A Faster Autoplay” by the developer. When you enable this mode, the reels will be hidden, and the game will only tell you the result of winning rounds in the centre of the screen. The feature is only available in jurisdictions that permit enhanced-speed play.
Neon Dreams Slot Bonus Feature
The games namesake “Neon Dreams” feature is triggered when hitting five or more matching symbols anywhere on the screen. The bonus game starts off similarly to the free re-spin feature during the base game, with the addition of a collection meter that will appear above the reels whilst the bonus mode is active. A heart shown to the left of the collection meter represents your lifeline – you only get one unless you can collect an additional heart on the reels during the bonus mode.
The collect meter can be filled by hitting at least one of the symbols which triggered the bonus round to begin with, which will grant a free re-spin as well. Each triggering symbol hit will move the meter one position to the right, and the bonus round will complete when you lose your life or fill the meter and collect your winnings.
There is an additional star symbol which only appears during the bonus game that will increase the value of any multipliers which you have not yet reached on the collection bar.
Neon Dreams Slot Review Final Thoughts
I was surprised by how little features Slotmill had included in Neon Dreams as they usually pack much more into their online slots. It’s a shame too, as there are some solid ideas here and its all done a little bit better than their Vegas Gold online slot which used similar mechanics – it all feels much more refined this time around, and I could see the payout mechanics used here becoming popular if there was a little bit more going on to keep players interested in between bonus rounds.
As it stands, it’s still a fun game, but is unlikely to keep you coming back for more over the long term. It’s certainly not Slotmill’s best effort, but it’s worth a look all the same.
