Game Overview
Villains are terrifying, but Neon Villains? Yeah, those are the real OG gangsters of their craft! These brightly coloured, glow-in-the-dark criminal masterminds have decided to make a rare appearance away from the dancefloor today, allowing them to feature in the latest online slot from Yggdrasil! All the preferred neon styles are catered for – you have the guy with the beard, the guy that looks like boy George, a token lady, and even a Tom Cruise lookalike who isn’t even a crazy scientologist! As for the vital statistics, this is a 243-way machine with a 96% RTP and a stunning jackpot of 25,000x the player’s stake.
The rules page of Neon Villains references a so-called ‘dropdown wins’ mechanic, but don’t be confused – this is simply another term for rolling, cascading, or avalanching reels. The DoubleMax multipliers are much more interesting though, as this mechanic will double the current round multiplier every time a winning combination is removed from the playfield. Better yet, the DoubleMax multiplier does not reset between spins during the main free spin bonus round, which awards between 7 and 11 spins depending on the number of triggering scatters. Finally, impatient players will be pleased to learn that Yggdrasil has included both bonus bet and bonus buy facilities, allowing you to skip the base game entirely if you wish.
You won’t get too many opportunities to meet these sorts of characters outside the shady nightclubs that your mother warned you about, so don’t miss out on our free demo slot of Neon Villains! It’s available to play below.
Neon Villains Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Neon is a chemical element of the noble gas variety and gives a distinct reddish-orange glow when used in low-voltage glow lamps. The more common usage of the term – to describe a fluorescent colour – comes from this characteristic glow, but I’m honestly not sure why a villain would choose to attach himself to such a term! I’m probably thinking way too deeply about this, aren’t I? I didn’t question the term neon when I reviewed Electric Avenue or Neon Staxx, after all! What can I say? Something about glow-in-the-dark criminals just makes me giggle slightly. I can’t be the only one, can I?
Time to get serious for a moment now, as we’re about to dig into the game’s all-important paytable! Our bearded hipster friend is the most valuable character on the paytable, as he’s worth 12.5x the total stake for each complete payway of five of a kind. Next, the Boy George impersonator will award 7.5x the bet for all five of his symbols, whilst the rather attractive brunette is a little less valuable (ED: according to who!) at 5x for a complete payway. The final high-paying symbol is the blue guy that I’m calling Tom Cruise, and he’s also worth 5x the total bet for all five of his symbols. The four playing card suits have been used for the low pays, and these share identical returns of 2.5x the total bet for a five-of-a-kind combination.
You can wager from €0.10 to €40.00 per spin in this game, with a reasonable 14 further permitted bet sizes between those two extremes. So, plenty of options are available regardless of the size of the bankroll with which you enter this game.
Base Game & Modifiers
Neon Villains is a standard five reel, three row video slot that features 243 active payways, which all start from the leftmost reel. The game features four high-paying character symbols, four low-paying card suits, and a wild that can substitute for all eight regular paytable symbols. All symbols require at least three matches on adjacent reels to award a win.
Doublemax Multiplier
Every base game round of Neon Villains begins with a 1x multiplier which will double each time a winning combination is removed from the reels. The DoubleMAX multiplier only caps out if you reach the game’s maximum permitted jackpot of 25,000x the total bet. The multiplier is reset before the start of the next game round.
Golden Bet
Enabling the Golden Bet option will increase the cost of each spin by an additional 20%. In return for this, the odds of triggering a free spins feature are doubled. The game’s RTP remains the same in either case; therefore, I would always recommend playing with this feature enabled if your bankroll permits.
Neon Villains Slot Bonus Features
Free spin scatter symbols are present on all five of Neon Villains reels. Landing three or more of these will trigger the free spins feature, with 7, 9, or 11 spins awarded for three, four, or five scatter symbols, respectively.
Free Spins
In this mode, the DoubleMAX multiplier will not be reset between each spin! This will obviously make it much easier to reach larger multipliers, although you’ll still need to hit something after reaching a big multiplier to realise its potential!
As the multiplier doubles each time it increases, you will need to hit five wins to reach a 16x multiplier, after which things begin to ramp up very quickly, as ten wins will get you to a whopping 512x total multiplier! I’m not sure how likely this is, though; The maximum I saw during my testing of the game was 128x, and I never hit a winning combination on anything larger than 32x, either.
Bonus Buy
Not keen on the base game? No problem – a bonus buy facility allows you to skip straight to the free spins at the cost of 100x the normal price per spin, which feels like a very fair price to me. Unfortunately, players from countries under the jurisdiction of the UKGC are prohibited from taking advantage of this option.
Neon Villains Slot Review Final Thoughts
I started this review in quite a jokey mood and eventually realised why – I was having a tonne of fun testing this excellent machine! The DoubleMAX multiplier is an exciting feature with bucketloads of big win potential, and I look forward to seeing the first jackpot videos from this game appearing on YouTube in the coming weeks!
