Game Overview
Slot provider Microgaming is nothing short of a legend in the online casino world, having been one of the earliest companies to create a real-money online casino. Their competitors at that time, known as CryptoLogic, have long since disappeared in a series of mergers and acquisitions, but Microgaming is still going strong over two decades later. They have been responsible for numerous other firsts over the years but have seemingly tightened up on experimentation and risk-taking as competition in the casino development industry has dramatically increased. Numero Uno online slot feels fairly typical of their output; it’s a 243-ways game with an RTP of 95.22%, whilst the maximum win is posted as 253,854. That is presumably a cash figure at max bet, which works out as a multiple of 2,110x your stake.
The feature set is based around a third, fourth, and fifth reel which are stuffed to the brim with stacks of wilds, as well as the rolling reels payout mechanic, which removes winning symbols from play immediately to allow new ones to drop in and create multiple winning combinations per paid spin. There’s a free spin bonus round, too, of course!
When did you last play something from Microgaming? Were you there back in the day, just as they were beginning? With so many new developers appearing each month, it’s easy to forget the old guard, so why not give our free demo slot of Numero Uno a blast below?
Numero Uno Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The title of the Numero Uno online slot is fairly ambiguous, and you don’t get too many clues once it finishes loading up, either! There is a ring in the background, and whilst studying the reel strips, I spotted an alarm bell for a scatter symbol, whilst the picture symbols all seem to feature animal characters who are dressed up in circus style outfits. It’s a weird one, for sure, and there isn’t any extra story or explanation provided in the game’s help files. The title screen makes it look like the animal characters could be facing off against one another, presumably in the ring… Mexican wrestling, perhaps?
I was surprised not to see any payout assigned to the wild symbol on the paytable, which is quite unusual for Microgaming. This means it almost certainly returns the same amount as the highest-paying regular symbol at 10x your bet for each completed pay way. If you feel a little disappointed with that headline figure, remember that the last three reels all contain a tonne of stacked wilds, and a full screen at 10x would theoretically return 2,430x your stake. The scatter symbols also have their own value, paying 250x your bet for five-of-a-kind. As for the rest of the pictures, we have a bulldog at 5x, another two dogs at 4x and 3.5x, and a chicken at 3x your bet for all five. I guess we can’t argue here – the paytable returns are pretty low – but this is a provider who knows what they are doing, and I’m sure that is balanced out somehow elsewhere in the game.
How much would you like to bet? Microgaming is one of the few developers to implement a continuous scroll bar on their bet selection page, allowing players to select any number they wish for each individual spin. In the Numero Uno video slot, the increments are €0.20 apart and begin at €0.20 (obviously!) before topping out at a somewhat ridiculous €120.00 for each spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
There aren’t too many surprises upon beginning to spin the reels of the Numero Uno slot game; it’s a typical 5×3 reel machine, and the use of the 243-way payout mechanic instantly makes any game straightforward to understand. Every symbol requires at least three matches from left-to-right to award a win, whilst the rolling reels feature steps in and removes your winning symbols immediately each time so that more symbols can fit on the screen to permit multiple consecutive payouts for every paid spin.
Stacked Wilds
Reels three, four, and five each feature more than 40 wild symbols arranged in stacks that will substitute for any missing symbols in a winning combination. I managed to hit a full 3×3 square a couple of times during testing, so it isn’t a particularly rare event despite having a tonne of potential for awarding huge wins.
Wild Showdown Modifier
The solo modifier included in Numero Uno is the Wild Showdown, triggering randomly in the base game and offering a guaranteed win on the next spin. In this mode, Numero Uno – ah, finally, we understand the title! – will face off with an opponent from the set shown on the paytable, eventually triggering reels two, three, or four to turn into stacked wild symbols.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed by this – it appears that only one reel will ever turn into wilds, and unless it is reel two at the same time as a stack drops on three through five, it really isn’t going to pay too much.
Numero Uno Slot Free Spins Feature
As for the bonus round, Microgaming rarely lets us down in this area, and their Numero Uno online slot is no exception. You’ll receive 15, 20, or 25 free spins to start with for three, four, or five scatters, respectively:
As well as your free spins, you will also receive a cash prize of 1x, 10x, or 50x your bet each time you win a bonus round. When the reels start spinning, things play out similarly to the base game with the same stacks of wilds on reels three through five, although the frequency that they appear does feel slightly higher during free spins.
Additionally, all wins scored during the free spins feature will be boosted by a random multiplier between 2x and 10x, making any spin with many wilds an exciting moment. Microgaming could have added something more here to separate the feature from the main game, but overall, my returns from the feature were respectable, and I would be happy if I had been playing for real money.
Numero Uno Slot Review Final Thoughts
It’s nice to see that Microgaming hasn’t lost its touch over the years – Numero Uno isn’t their best game, nor is it particularly unique or innovative. Still, it’s a solid online slot that will keep you entertained for a while if you are looking for something different to play.
