Out Of The Ice (Print Studios) Slot Demo & Review

Relax Gaming is acting as the publisher this time around for yet another fledgling game development studio known as “Print Studios”. I haven’t encountered these guys before, but I feel confident that Relax will have done their due diligence before lending their name to Out of the Ice. The overall presentation is very high-quality, and the beautifully simple wagering mechanics and paytable both suggest very strongly that Relax might have acted as a kind of… Executive Producer for Print Studios on this game. To clarify, however, this is nothing more than speculation on my part. The RTP is a healthy 96.55%, whilst the maximum win is a reasonable 6,000x your bet.

The opening screen is divided into two, with one side devoted to each of the game’s two primary features. The first is labelled the “Merfolk Multipliers” and promises up to three separate multipliers on every win. A peek at the game’s paytable confirms that these multipliers are applied independently when more than one occurs on a single spin rather than being multiplied together. The second primary feature is a free spin-based bonus round with three different modes to experiment with.

There’s no doubt that Print and Relax have come up with something interesting here, so why not try our free demo of the Out of the Ice video slot before playing with real money?

Paytable For Out Of The Ice Slot Game
Out of the Ice Slot paytable

I wasn’t sure if the creatures displayed on the reels of Out of the Ice were supposed to represent actual earthbound organisms found deep in the polar regions. Thankfully, the paytable gave me a helping hand before I made a fool of myself trying to assign names to these strange-looking animals! The Purple, Green, and Blue Dragons at the top of the paytable put paid to any debate right away. These creatures might be inspired by earth-like creatures (there’s some pretty alien-looking madness living deep down in the oceans, you know…), but they certainly aren’t meant to directly represent anything alive today. Overall, whilst there are plenty of other “ice-themed” online slots, such as PG Soft’s The Great Icescape and Pragmatic Play’s Frozen Tropics, there is something unique about Out of the Ice that kind of puts it in a theme category all of its own.

Let’s have another look at that paytable… that’s the one mentioned in the previous paragraph that begins with “Here be dragons”. Well, there are actually two symbols that precede the dragons but don’t have any actual payout attached to them. Instead, we have a female “Merfolk Multiplier” who can award multipliers of 2x, 3x, 4x, or 6x, and a male one that boasts bigger multipliers of 8x, 10x, 20x, and 40x. The actual paying symbols are topped by the Purple Dragon, who awards 10x your stake for five of a kind, followed by the Green Dragon at 3.75x and the Blue Dragon at 2.5x.

A single selector is used to choose your bet size, which can range between €0.20 per spin all the way up to €100.00 per spin. The steps are nicely small and granular towards the bottom end of this scale but start to jump wildly towards the top end – for example, the option before €100.00 per spin is €50.00 per spin. This isn’t likely to bother many players, however – only those with money to burn can afford to be betting those kinds of numbers on a single spin.

Base Game & Modifiers

Play With 5 Reels, 259 Paylines, And Win Up To 6,000x Your Bet In Print Studio's Out Of The Ice Online Slot
Out of the Ice Slot base game

Out of the Ice video slot is yet another slot with three to five rows and five reels… wait, three to five rows? Yes, don’t be misled here – this isn’t your typical 5×3 playfield online slot. The nearest match to its design that I can think of would be NetEnt’s Motorhead slot, which also used a design where the reels would get taller towards the right-hand side of the screen.

In Out of the Ice, the initial set up is two reels of three symbols, two reels of four symbols, and a final single reel made up of five symbols. This gives a total of 76 pay ways, but the configuration expands and contracts whenever the game awards re-spins. If you make it to a fourth re-spin all five reels are expanded to a height of five, for a total of 259 pay ways. This same configuration is also used during the free spin bonus round.

Note that Out of the Ice uses an adjacent payways mechanic that I have only seen previously on one other game. The name of the other game escapes me, but the way this works is that only pay ways where symbols are adjacent to each other from left to right are valid. A useful diagram of how this works is included in the games paytable, if you have difficulty imagining how this works.

Freezing Respin Feature

You’ll be seeing this feature quite a lot whilst playing the Out of the Ice slot game, as it kicks in every time you score a winning combination. The leftmost reel will be removed, and a new reel added to the right-hand side of the screen, increasing the number of pay ways from 76 ways to 90 ways. If a win is attained on the re-spin, the process will repeat, and the number of ways will increase to 154, 164, and finally, 259. If a fifth win is attained when 259 pay ways are in effect, the game will trigger its free spin bonus round.

Merfolk Multipliers Round

The Merfolk mentioned on the paytable do not appear on the reels by default, instead appearing from underneath the ice at random following a winning combination. It is possible for up to three Merfolk to appear at once, but only one will ever appear on a winning pay way simultaneously. The Merfolk award multipliers of between 2x and 40x, to the pay way they appear on, but these multipliers are never combined because they only apply to a single pay way.

Out Of The Ice Slot Free Spins Feature

Hit 5 Consecutive Wins For The Free Spins To Be Triggered In Out Of The Ice Video Slot
Out of the Ice Slot free spins feature

The free spin-based bonus round in the Out of the Ice online slot is not triggered using scatter symbols like in many other online slot games. Instead, the Freezing Re-Spin modifier from the base game will eventually award the free spins if you should be lucky enough to score five consecutive wins in a row as the grid expands with additional payways.

Free Spins Feature

When the bonus round is triggered, you will be offered a choice of ten multiplier free spins, eight sticky multiplier free spins, or four sticky multiplier retrigger free spins. All three options are played on the maximum 5×5 grid size with 259 adjacent payways.

All three options share many other common features; for example, winning combinations hit during the free spins feature are held in place similarly to the freezing re-spin feature, but with the addition of random multipliers instead of additional payways.

The Sticky Multiplier free spin option has the advantage that any multipliers applied to a win will stick in place for the remainder of the free spins, multiplying any other combinations that happen to pass through that space for the duration of the bonus round. This seems like quite a good deal in return for giving up just two free spins.

The Sticky Multiplier Retrigger free spins, on the other hand, ask you to give up more than half of your free spins, but you also receive one additional free spin any time a multiplier which has been made “sticky” is applied to a later win for the first time. This can work out very well if you are lucky and get lots of multipliers early on in your bonus round, but my experience was that this option required more luck than I seem to possess right now. Your mileage may vary!

Pros

  • High RTP.
  • A good little showcase of what Print Studios might be capable of.

Cons

  • The maximum win of just 6,000x might be a little off-putting for some.

Out of the Ice Slot Review Final Thoughts

Out of the Ice is a fun game with some unique elements, and the maximum win of 6,000x your stake should be large enough to attract many players – though perhaps not the Megaways loving crowd who have become addicted to games with maximum wins above 50,000x your stake. I came out ahead by a large margin whilst testing this game, so perhaps I’m a little biased… but I’d definitely give this one a try for real money!
