Game Overview

I don’t recall seeing many grid slots from Nolimit City in the past, so it’s nice to see Pearl Harbor set up in that style. As a massive fan of the genre, this game is all the more exciting. Grid slots do not use payways or paylines, so any cluster of five or more adjacent matching symbols will reward you with a win. The default RTP is 96.06%, although this does fluctuate slightly when using the bonus bet/bonus buy options up to a maximum of 96.33%. As for the jackpot, Nolimit City has performed a two billion round simulation, resulting in a maximum win of 41,127x the current bet.

If you are familiar with this gaming studio, then you’ll know that their slots are usually packed full of special features, and Pearl Harbour is no exception. The base game features an xBomb wild symbol which can blow up an area of up to ten symbols, as well as the developer’s trademark xSplit feature, which creates additional symbol positions on the fly. Colossal Symbols are extremely handy for boosting the value of your winning clusters, as these giant symbols can cover an area of up to 3×3 regular positions. Nolimit has cleverly tailored the main bonus round to the Pearl Harbour theme, so you can expect to be dogfighting against Japanese Kamikaze pilots in your quest for a huge win! There’s never a dull moment with this studio, is there?

The second World War is an intriguing theme for any movie or video game, but this is the first time I have seen it as the basis for an online slot. If you’re curious to see what Nolimit City has come up with, then why not try our Pearl Harbor demo slot? It’s available to play below.

Pearl Harbor Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Pearl Harbor Slot Paytable

Try as I might, I could only find one other game in our free slots catalogue with a similar historical vibe to this one, also by NLC and titled D-Day. This isn’t all that surprising, really – Nolimit City seems to be the only developer willing to create games with this kind of gritty, serious tone. Take their recent game, The Border, for example – could you really imagine NetEnt creating anything similar to that? Or how about Folsom Prison? I wouldn’t call these games “horror” as such, but they definitely have an 18+ kind of feel to them that you don’t seem to find anywhere else. I hope that nobody takes offence at the specific focus of Pearl Harbor – it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the theme of this game struck a nerve with somebody out there.

That’s the controversial stuff out of the way, so let’s get back to the good stuff – the paytable! We’ll give the payouts for maximum clusters of 40 or more symbols and smaller clusters of 30 or 20 symbols to give you a feel for the range of wins this game can award. There are four high-paying character symbols; a Japanese pilot paying 625x/275x/75x, an Allied General paying 375x/90x/50x, an Allied Pilot worth 275x/75x/40x, and finally, the Kamikaze paying 180x/60x/25x. As for the lower-paying royal symbols, these will also pay between 30x-75x for the maximum cluster size, meaning they still have plenty of potential to award a decent win.

You can choose to bet on Pearl Harbor from a minimum of €0.20 per spin up to a maximum of €100.00 if your bankroll permits. Be careful, though, as the variance of this game will empty your wallet quicker than you can imagine when playing at bigger bets!

Pearl Harbor Slot Base Game & Modifiers

Pearl Harbor Slot Base Game

It won’t take long for you to notice that Pearl Harbor is anything but your typical online slot! When you first begin to play, the reel set looks incredibly tiny, as only the central 3×3 area is unlocked. You can expand the available reel area via xBomb Explosions, Targets, Colossal Symbols, or winning combinations up to a maximum size of 7×7 positions.

Xbomb Explosions

When an xBomb wild symbol lands within the active reel area, it explodes and blows away up to 10 surrounding symbols. If the xBomb symbol lands adjacent to the edge of the active area, it will expand the area by one row or column unless it lands in a corner position, in which case the expansion will cover a row and a column.

Target Wilds

The target symbol will force the active reel area to expand so that it is included in the current spin, even if it lands outside of the active area. After this expansion takes place, the target will transform into a wild symbol, potentially helping to form a winning cluster.

Xsplit Symbol

We’ve seen xSplit symbols in many previous Nolimit City games, but the version included in Pearl Harbor is even more helpful than ever before! These xSplit symbols can appear in both horizontal and vertical variants, and the direction that the sword is pointing will determine which way adjacent symbols will be divided.

Colossal Symbols

Like the target symbol, the giant colossal symbols will force the currently active reel area to expand whenever they land anywhere on the reel set. Colossal symbols can appear in 2×2 or 3×3 configurations but are only treated as a single symbol for the purposes of calculating winning clusters. If a colossal symbol is split by the xSplit feature, it can be divided into nine unique parts.

Bonus Bet

There are two bonus bet options available in Pearl Harbor; paying 50% extra on top of the normal price per spin will guarantee that at least one scatter symbol lands on every spin, resulting in a 300% increase in your odds of triggering a bonus round.

You can also choose to pay 100% more or twice the regular cost per spin in return for a guarantee that two scatter symbols will land on every spin. The paytable states that this will increase your odds of hitting a bonus round by 10x, making this seem like a bargain!

Pearl Harbor Slot Bonus Features

Pearl Harbor Slot Bonus Feature
Pearl Harbor slot bonus feature

There are two main bonus rounds available in Pearl Harbor. Three scatter symbols will trigger the Dogfight feature, which is a three-spin bonus round, whilst four scatters activate the enhanced Tora! Tora! Tora! Feature. Both bonus rounds have a second stage where the largest wins can be found.

Dogfight Feature

After activating the dogfight feature, you will find yourself transported to the fighter plane’s cockpit with three spins on your remaining counter and an instrument panel with 18 dials in front of you.

This is a typical three-spin feature in many ways, meaning that you need to land at least one multiplier on the instrument panel on each spin to top your remaining spin counter back up to three. If you go three spins in a row without landing any symbols, then the game will return you back to the base game.

If all 18 instrument dials are filled whilst the feature is in play, then the bonus round will progress to the secondary Kamikaze phase. Protect your ship from divebombing attacks by Japanese pilots, and you might walk away with tens of thousands of times your bet!

Tora! Tora! Tora! Feature

This is an enhanced version of the Dogfight feature, which has two additional features: the Midway Pop and Bomb Drop. These features can make it much easier to fill your instrument panel with multipliers and thus significantly increase your chances of progressing to the Kamikaze phase, but again I wasn’t able to reach that stage of the game during testing.

Bonus Buy

Those players lucky enough to access the bonus buy feature will be presented with the following three options to choose from if they wish to gain access to the bonus rounds instantly.

  • Dogfight Feature: Costs 60x the current bet.
  • Tora! Tora! Tora! Feature: Costs 712x the current bet.
  • Random Feature: Pay 73x the current bet and be awarded either of the bonus rounds randomly.

Pros

  • A very different style of bonus feature with huge potential.
  • Big max win of 41,127x bet.

Cons

  • It can be difficult to trigger the super bonus without the feature buy option.
  • Variable RTP models are available for casino operators to use.

Pearl Harbor Slot Review Final Thoughts

I love the attention to detail that Nolimit City has paid here – all of the features tie in beautifully with the overall theme, and the graphical style and music both suit the game perfectly. I only wish that I could have gotten lucky enough to see the later stages of the bonus round – I suspect I’ll be playing this for a while longer after I sign off this review.
