The unusual title of Pick N Mix X Up is obviously related to the inclusion of the “X Up” feature, which is a fancy way of describing a consolation prize for hitting two scatter symbols. That bonus round is a typical free spin feature, but the Upsizer option is unique as it allows you to purchase additional X Up tokens (and, therefore, a larger multiplier) before your feature begins. Pick N Mix X Up Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I reloaded the Pick N Mix X Up slot game and tried to work out what it was about this theme that stood out to me initially – I’m really not sure what it is, to be honest! The backdrop appears to be filled with sweets, which I guess is the Pick N Mix part of the title, whilst the reel set looks a little bit squished in the middle of the screen, which makes the symbols look tall and thin, but other than that… I guess it must just be a personal preference thing! There isn’t even anything particularly interesting about the reel set either – cherries, lucky sevens, BAR symbols… all standard fruit machine style symbols like hundreds of other online slots. I don’t recall any other Pick N Mix themed slots, but Play’N’Go’s Sweet Alchemy has a similar theme if you also find the look of this game quite appealing. Now the real question – how does it pay?!
Let’s start with the wild symbols – 4.5x the current stake for each completed pay way of five-of-a-kind doesn’t sound like much but bear in mind that these are expanding stacked wilds, and you could potentially catch a full screen of them if it’s your lucky day! The highest-paying regular symbol is the three diamonds with a payout of 4x the bet for all five, followed by the lucky seven at 3x, the triple BAR at 2.8x, and the bells at 2.5x. The cherries complete the high-paying half of the paytable with a return of 2x for each complete pay way, after which there is just a handful of lower-paying royal symbols, and a 2x return for hitting three scatters – barely even worth mentioning.
Wagering options start at €0.10 per round and top out at €20.00. There are two tabs to the interface, one labelled “Quick Bet” with a handful of predefined bets and another labelled “Advanced”, which allows you to choose any wager in increments of €0.10.
Base Game & Modifiers
The regular gameplay utilises a 5×3 playfield like so many other online slots, but the way the reels are squished into a tall and thin layout makes the game look much more unique than it is. The 243 pay ways setup is also very conventional and is used by hundreds of other online slots; all you need to do is land three or more symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left-hand side to score a win without worrying about any fixed pay lines.
X Up Feature
Many games feature a consolation prize of sorts when you hit two scatters but fail to land the third one to trigger a bonus round. The Pick N Mix X Up online slot takes things further by awarding an X Up token each time two scatters land on the screen, and these tokens will fill the meter shown on the left of the reel set.
Each time you complete a stage of the meter, it will increase the multiplier for your next free spin feature. If you manage to fill the meter to the maximum of 10x, then the game will automatically trigger the bonus round for you, which feels fair – you would have to go an extremely long time to fill the meter all the way to the top!
Pick N Mix X Up Slot Free Spin Feature
So, you have been spinning the Pick N Mix X Up video slot for an hour or so and finally manage to land three scatter symbols for eight free spins – what happens now?
Your X Up tokens will finally come into play now, as all wins scored during the free spins feature will be multiplied by whatever value you managed to get up to on the meter before triggering a bonus round.
Additionally, you can win extra free spins during this mode by landing two or more scatter symbols which will add at least two more free spins to your remaining counter. Any X Up tokens collected during the free spins feature will continue to boost your current multiplier, but it will be reset at the end of each bonus round.
Upsizer Feature
This is an unusual feature that will show up before your free spin bonus round begins. The Upsizer feature offers you the chance to buy additional X Up tokens before your bonus round starts, therefore increasing your multiplier value. The game will allow you to select a multiplier up to the maximum of 10x with a calculated cost based on the number of X Up tokens you have before the feature begins.
The prices seemed quite fair during my game testing, but if you are on a very low multiplier, I would not be tempted to pay to boost your way to 10x every time you trigger a bonus round. It’s up to you, though, and it sure is nice to have the choice!
Bonus Buy Feature
For a fixed price of 100x the current bet, you can opt to purchase the free spin feature, provided you have already won a bonus round via base gameplay at least once. I’m not sure why Alchemy Gaming thought it necessary to enforce this restriction, but it sure is annoying for somebody just looking to review the game!
Pick N Mix X Up Slot Review Final Thoughts
I love the presentation of this game – for what reason, I’m not quite sure, but that’s just how it is! As for the payout and feature set, well, I’m a little less keen. I try to play every new game for at least 60-90 minutes when writing a review and I didn’t have any extraordinary results during that time whilst playing Pick N Mix X Up – lots of my bonus buys resulted in a loss and triggering the bonus round organically felt extremely difficult.
