Pilgrim Of Dead Slot (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

The whole “of dead” line of online slots is a little triggering for me – is that correct grammar, Play’N’Go? Shouldn’t it be Book of _the_ Dead? Not Book of Dead, by Developer of Slot? Am I just being pedantic here? It seems as if they are happy just to add “of Dead” at the end of any old word; we’ve already had Book of Dead, Legacy of Dead, Scroll of Dead, Doom of Dead, and today we’re treated to Pilgrim of Dead. To be fair, though, whilst the titles of these slots might suck, the machines themselves certainly do not! This latest entry to the series is another ten-line slot with an above average RTP of 96.18 alongside an attractive maximum win of 10,000x your bet.

Those vital statistics could seem awfully familiar to fans of the original Book of Dead online slot, as that was also a ten-line machine with an identical maximum win and a similar RTP. This isn’t just a coincidence, as Pilgrim of Dead shares numerous features with the ultra-popular Book of Dead machine. The base game of both slots seems to be identical, and both machines also use the same expanding symbol mechanic in their bonus rounds. Where Pilgrim Dead differs from its predecessors is that the expanding symbol chosen for each bonus round is now also sticky, meaning you only have to land one on each of the five reels to guarantee a full-screen win on every subsequent free spin! The price that you pay for this is that you are only awarded five free spins at the beginning of each bonus round, although this can be extended if you are lucky enough to hit a re-trigger.

Pilgrim Of Dead Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Pilgrim Of Dead Slot Paytable
Pilgrim of Dead slot paytable

Ancient Egypt is a popular theme in the online slots industry, so much so that we already have an entire category of these games in our review library. It’s difficult to say which machine kicked off this trend, although Book of Ra and Cleopatra were undoubtedly amongst the first of the bunch, having been released in land-based cabinets more than two decades ago. That’s an eternity in any technology-focused industry, of course, and slots have come an awfully long way since those games were first released. Modern examples of the genre include Doom of Egypt, Egyptian Fortunes, and Egyptian Tombs; so, the real question is, how does Pilgrim of Dead compare to those machines?

After opening the paytable for the first time, I was pleased to see that the scatter symbols have been given a payout in this game, as that is becoming a rarity with modern slots! It’s only 100x your bet for all five scatters, but I’m sure we can all agree that this is far better than nothing. As for the regular symbols, the Pharoah is the highest-paying of the bunch and will also pay 100x your bet for a full payline of five of a kind, whilst the cat takes the second-place spot with a return of 25x for all five symbols. The scarab beetle and set of scales complete the high-paying line-up, both of which will pay 12.5x for a complete payline. At the lower end of the table, there are five royals with five of a kind payouts of between 4x and 6x the current bet.

Selecting your wager is performed by choosing a coin value and the number of coins you wish to wager on each of the game’s ten paylines. This results in a minimum/maximum wager of €0.10 and €100.00, respectively and also provides a decent level of granular control for those who want to bet somewhere between the two extremes.

Base Game & Modifiers

Pilgrim Of Dead Slot Base Game
Pilgrim of Dead slot base game

The basic gameplay of Pilgrim of Dead is indistinguishable from many of the previous “Book of…” slots, with a standard 5×3 playfield and ten fixed paylines. The scatter and the highest-paying regular symbol will both award a win for two matching symbols, whilst everything else requires at least three matching symbols starting from the left.

Wild Scatter

The wild and scatter symbols are the same in Pilgrim of Dead, which is always a nice touch, in my opinion! In many other games, the scatters can end up blocking other winning combinations; that doesn’t happen here, as every scatter symbol is also wild.

Pilgrim Of Dead Slot Bonus Features

Pilgrim Of Dead Slot Free Spins Feature

The main bonus round is triggered by hitting three or more wild tomb symbols during the base game. You will only receive five free spins regardless of the number of triggering scatters, but you do grab a bonus cash prize if your triggering combination is composed of four or five scatter symbols.

Free Spins

After triggering the free spins feature, you will first see a new screen where the expanding symbol will be selected for the current bonus round. You will be offered one opportunity to gamble the chosen symbol for the chance of landing a better one, which is great if you are unhappy with the first choice that the game provides.

After the expanding symbol is selected, you will be taken back to the reels, where five free spins will be waiting for you. Each time your selected expanding symbol lands on the reels, it will become sticky before expanding to cover the entire reel.

You can win additional sets of five free spins by hitting three more scatter symbols whilst this feature is in play. If you are lucky enough to land one instance of your expanding symbol on each reel, you will be guaranteed a full-screen win on every subsequent spin for the duration of the bonus round.

Pilgrim Of Dead Slot Review Final Thoughts

This is only a minor tweak to the formula of Book of Dead, but it’s an interesting tweak that will grab the attention of those still playing the first game in this series. If you love high-variance slots, this one is sure to be right up your street, but it remains to be seen if there is enough new here to warrant players switching to this game over the long term.
